I remember everyone always made a big deal about the Ross Report. Anyone remember that? Long before he had his own podcast he had a monthly (I think it was monthly someone can correct me if that's wrong) newsletter of sorts that everyone was anticipating. He wouldn't just talk about wrestling but also Sooner football and pushing his BBQ sauce.

Pretty sure those sports journalists work in the profession of coverage, and gain backstage access to teams, have connections with important people in that team/profession, and express their views on a high-profile media medium to that media market. Dave Meltzer is the biggest smark in the world. We know this. Anyone who is a smark, looks up to Meltzer as a wrestling prophet when this guy hasnt even been in the business before. His opinions do not matter and the faster people realize this, the more enjoyable wrestling will be. People like Meltzer look at wrestling not as just entertainment but rather as some talent contest. Instead of watching the action and letting the wrestlers out you through an experience, its more about whether the wrestlers check boxes in a wrestling match and about how many stars you can give them.

MikEanatic I happen to think H is a great wrestler. He knows his place in the ring by watching the way he wrestles. I am not an expert, I just like what I see, and ignore what I don't. I can't say if he is far worse than taker can be. Undertaker is my ultimate favorite in the WWE, and I don't quote what they should or should not do or what they should or should not be, I'm just a fan, quote the Taker. I find no care in who's character should what.. I just see how they treat each other and the excitement they give me when they come out that entrance is what gives. I fallow thier passion.

I have an extensive knowledge of some things, but "expert" is a bit much. I don't need somebody who is a lousy reporter to tell me what's good and what's not. I enjoyed wrestling long before I started looking online. Access to videos online allows people the opportunity to watch matches from all over the world without having to tape trade (remember that?). However, one of the worst things about wrestling on the net is that seemingly anyone can become an "expert" on wrestling. And not just on wrestling, but pretty much on anything. What's worse, so many clueless folks turn these idiots into online stars, because they don't know any better.
Love this. All Dave Meltzer does is bash the business with his reviews unless it's affiliated with RoH, hence his love for NJPW and the ex RoH guys in WWE. He just wants to see 90 minute matches with flips, 101 finishers and no selling. Gone are the glory days of story telling because of douchebags like him complaining all the time in the media
I think what most people fail to realize is that Meltzer really isn't the issue here, it's the people who value his opinions so much on either side of the fence. He deserves a certain magnitude of respect because he's probably the only person to rival Cornette in terms of being a wrestling historian, but as far as the ratings go they really do not matter at all. Clearly he has a preference for a certain style, and that's okay, but the impact of the ratings was really only magnified by the hipster types who want to feel like wrestling connoisseurs who are so much better than you because they watch 'REAL wrestling and not the sanitized mainstream garbage' and the impact was further magnified by the "anti smarks" who got worked because they vehemently disagreed with Meltzer's takes, such as the infamous lack of 5 star matches for Kurt Angle. Combine all that and now you have at least 80% of an entire entertainment industry being heavily influenced by one single reviewer's subjective opinions, which has in turn led to more and more absolutely clueless new wrestlers who will never draw a proper dime and that whole thjng is quite honestly so absurd that it makes me laugh every time I think about it.
I listen to the radio show, and I like WOR, but these guys are absolutely right. Especially Ole and Al Snow, Dave does at times present his opinion as facts and Al Snow puts it far better than I ever could.

The wrestling business for years tried to keep people like Dave Meltzer out of it so he wouldn't ruin it. Now he's being embraced and even being put into prestigious Halls of Fame like the one in Iowa when so many legends who died for the sport are still waiting on their turn. What a disgrace. To quote the late great Gary Hart, he's been successful in pulling the wool over several thousand fans into forking over $10 every week for his opinions being presented as fact. Worse yet, hes influenced a generation of young wrestlers to kill their bodies working a style that will shorten their careers rather than practicing an art form and learning good character work and psychology. Yet unfortunately, there is no voice or alternative that is there to counter them. Good work Dave. You are the best conman in wrestling.
Cena and Punk are mainstream megastars and they had the hottest storyline going on back then and the crowd there was great. Indie wrestlers who are not popular and have a good storyline going on fell the need to impress this moron like he is the god of wrestling and everything that he says is sacred.
If meltzer owned a business it would be a Japanese version of AEW & MLW where you have all 45 minute matches. He would only hire non-speaking indie wrestlers.

Meltzer is entitled to his opinion, but in order to get a broader picture of wrestling one must seek the wisdom (and sometimes faults) of those who have been in the business for decades. Examples include, Eric Bischoff, Jim Cornette, Al Snow, Vince Russo, Bully Ray Dudley, and other wrestling veterans.
With WWE/Vince, he cares about looks, size, charisma, and promo skills as well as wrestling talent. With Meltzer, he only seems to care about in-ring, high spots, and workrate. Yes, the Japanese/Indie/Mexican talent have intense matches, but the WWE style is more about storytelling, repetition, and keeping it simple (for the most part).
WWE stopped caring about building megastars or making compelling characters/storylines a long time ago. The wrestling business it's not what it used to be, that's for sure.

I enjoyed wrestling long before I started looking online. Access to videos online allows people the opportunity to watch matches from all over the world without having to tape trade (remember that?). However, one of the worst things about wrestling on the net is that seemingly anyone can become an "expert" on wrestling. And not just on wrestling, but pretty much on anything. I think what most people fail to realize is that Meltzer really isn't the issue here, it's the people who value his opinions so much on either side of the fence. He deserves a certain magnitude of respect because he's probably the only person to rival Cornette in terms of being a wrestling historian, but as far as the ratings go they really do not matter at all. Clearly he has a preference for a certain style, and that's okay, but the impact of the ratings was really only magnified by the hipster types who want to feel like wrestling connoisseurs who are so much better than you because they watch 'REAL wrestling and not the sanitized mainstream garbage' and the impact was further magnified by the "anti smarks" who got worked because they vehemently disagreed with Meltzer's takes, such as the infamous lack of 5 star matches for Kurt Angle. Combine all that and now you have at least 80% of an entire entertainment industry being heavily influenced by one single reviewer's subjective opinions, which has in turn led to more and more absolutely clueless new wrestlers who will never draw a proper dime and that whole thjng is quite honestly so absurd that it makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Cena and Punk are mainstream megastars and they had the hottest storyline going on back then and the crowd there was great. Indie wrestlers who are not popular and have a good storyline going on fell the need to impress this moron like he is the god of wrestling and everything that he says is sacred.

If meltzer owned a business it would be a Japanese version of AEW & MLW where you have all 45 minute matches. He would only hire non-speaking indie wrestlers.

Meltzer is entitled to his opinion, but in order to get a broader picture of wrestling one must seek the wisdom (and sometimes faults) of those who have been in the business for decades. Examples include, Eric Bischoff, Jim Cornette, Al Snow, Vince Russo, Bully Ray Dudley, and other wrestling veterans.
With WWE/Vince, he cares about looks, size, charisma, and promo skills as well as wrestling talent. With Meltzer, he only seems to care about in-ring, high spots, and workrate. Yes, the Japanese/Indie/Mexican talent have intense matches, but the WWE style is more about storytelling, repetition, and keeping it simple (for the most part).

The Answer meltzer was never the genius behind Vince's creations and he never will be, he wants to, he knows he envy's Vince. That poor dumb fuck. Only Vince was the only genius. No matter if Vince fails today in many ideas or what, Vince still owns that shit. And meltzer only owns his own opinions. He wont get any futher from where he's still at. He's just a cop-out male version of Wendy Williams and that's it.

To get just how fucking dumb Meltzer's ratings are I'll remind you of this: he gave HBK and Taker at WM25 a 4 and a half stars, a Top 5 WWE match while giving CM Punk vs John Cena, a botch fest (literally botch after botch, go rewatch it, and this time it's not just Cena) the full 5 stars because of the crowd and the build up. Fuckin' PLEASE.
The storyline wasn't even that good, who really bought that Punk will "leave" with the title and go to other promotions with it? They didn't even allow him to go over clean, I bet they'll let him flaunt the belt in Japan. Get real.

Not here to defend Meltzer, but I always hate wrestlers saying something like: "Don't criticize, unless you stepped through the ropes." or "If you're so smart, run your own promotion."

If you only watch WWE and don't understand why he give higher reviews for matches in Japan to WWE then maybe start watching NJPW and maybe you will understand why. Also meltzer shares very similar opinions to the likes of stone cold and Jim cornette people who have been in the business for decades so obviously he knows what he is talking about
I will never understand why people in the business right now care about what Meltzer thinks….never understood why anyone did in the first place. We got a lot of wrestlers this generation trying to get on Dave Meltzer’s 5 star rating matches and even a billionaire making it his mission to be on Meltzer’s Booker Of The Year…. They don't understand pro wrestling in the slightest. Meltzer has no clue. They detest the foundation and fundamentals. They do not understand simple psychology. They hate characters and entertainment, yet couldn't pick out a good wrestling match if their mothers lives depended on it. They have video game mentality.
