This second reaction was worth the wait and like always the editing for the levity is fantastic. This ending always brings a tear if not for Maximus but also for Juba, Djimon Hounsou's character. It's always a good movie to re-watch once in a while.
Oliver Reed the man who played the Gladiator trainer died during the making of this. Got into a drinking competition with some sailors in Malta where it was filmed and died. They used CGI during the final parts I believe.
This is one of my all time favourite movies ever so I waited for the 2nd video to watch the reaction in full. This was the first time I saw Joaquin Phoenix act and he's a big actor now but boy did he and Russell Crowe act this well.
"I will see you again, but not yet, Not yet" always makes me happy because he gets to go see & live his life with his family which are still alive. such a beautiful story this movie tells. idk if you guys ever checked out -The Last Kingdom- would recommend it's another story i loved watching.
Actually, in Rome, when the Emperor gestured thumb down it meant ''Ground your sword!'' to the victor. The vanquished fighter was spared. If, however, he gestured toward his neck, it meant ''Death!'' to the vanquished.

I think this was the first movie I ever cried to when I was a kid. It was so good and Phoenix was so annoying but he did a great job as a villain. I hated him as a kid
With the gladiators sometimes they did do it voluntarily! It just depended. Sometimes they were slaves who could receive freedom -- other times they were like professional athletes who just wanted to do it for the fame. And boooy the gladiators were famous. Super taken care of. We're talking daily baths, any food you could want, everyone wants to be you. Pretty sweet gig. Also, it was common for the gladiators to show mercy. They did sometimes fight to the death, but mercy was far more common amongst two known and popular gladiators. The fans, like today, sometimes just want a good fight. And like today in the UFC where you get two dudes the fans both love fighting, the crowd doesn't want either guy bodied really if that makes sense. The Colloseum was madness though, and you were definitely seeing stuff die. Mostly animals. Animals were BY FAR the biggest victims. And humans were most frequently killed by animals in the colloseum. It was their version of "Man vs Beast" but it was literal. They would put people in there with a bear just to see what would happen. Shit like that was suuuper common. Or just having staged hunts of big animals like elephants or tigers. Also, they used to do live re-enactments of historical battles with actual deaths (that's the first type of fight Maximus had in Rome). This movie shows that side of the gladiator world -- more of the inmate; prisoner; slave; getting fed to lion colloseum than the UFC with weapons version that's sometimes described from accounts. But as best as we can tell, it was both. The colloseum was just an arena, and they had all different kinds of stuff you could see. Plus they gave out free bread!!!!! Win win!!!!
Gladiator although commercially & critically successful was not considered to be an absolute great film by critics at the time because of its historical inaccuracy and dramatization. I remember at the time watching it and thinking it's an okay good film but now that I know more about filmmaking & acting, it's a true classic cultural iconic film & in retrospect is seen in a lot better light by critics.
Its so wild this movie came out in 2000 and people still watch sports thats sole purpose is to distract us and divide us....ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?!
The significance of the dirt rubbing was to remind himself that he came from the dust and to the dust he shall return. It was an acceptance of the possible death to come.

You need to find the balance of watching the movie n interacting with the camera/audience and showing your personalities without faking it. You want to be yourselves. People want to feel like they're having fun with you both. Just my opinion

What many people don't seem to catch is that Maximus was poisoned when the emperor stabbed him. There was poison on that dagger.
