One handed backhand myths debunked: Former Top 100 ATP Pro, Jeff Salzenstein, is exposing 3 common myths that could be crippling your one handed backhand potential. Most players make at least 1 of these 3 mistakes... Do you? goo.gl/2KyMmS
Anyone noticed what Damien does with his index finger? Not sure if I am saying this correctly in English, but it is splayed out. One has more touch and control by doing so, i.e. not holding the racket jammed in the hand like hammer. I do this while serving and on my forehand as well. This splayed out index finger helps a lot to achieve a relaxed and comfortable feel.
Great instructions Jeff! Tennis is a hidden diamond among sports cause of all the moving parts one has to assimilate and put into practice and then made to look simple as if it occurred naturally. Take even the most effortless, graceful looking, complete player Roger Federer. He must have hit millions and millions of shots and subtly adjusting them to stay in top form all those years. But your lessons are so concise and to the point. They motivate players to go out and practice.
Great. How much pressure does he hast on each finger ans thumb? Does he have the same pressure on index finger as on the pinkie finger? And is the thumb pressing on the index finger and on the grip or is the thumb more relaxed? Thanks a lot
It's not so much about relaxing the grip as much as it is about driving with the butt cap and maintaining the L through the whole swing. If you hold the grip lose, the impact with the ball will twist the head and the ball can go anywhere. Most people rec level can't hit this shot because it requires a very deep Extention , which means a lot of flexibility. Most players will automatically figure out the grip tension once they get comfortable with the proper mechanics of the stroke.
Dear Jeff, thank you for your videos...they are very usefull even from Italy!! ;-) I have a question for you: Have I to change my grip from forehand to one handed backhand? Thank you Daniel
I would say that his bh Gasquet like is easier to hit, time and execute and is more forgiving on the timing. It does give good spin and speed to the ball and you can also adjust it easily for flat bh. Very efficient and yes maybe not the most stylish. But what are you looking for ?
and with switching to semi western you should also a little bit try to take the ball a little more out in front of you right? with the eastern i feel like you're more trying to hit it out the side of yourself
Hey, Jeff. Thank you for the video, I think it is a very important topic. I've got a question. How should I distribute this grip tension across my paw? My intuition is that I shouldn't relax the index and thumb. Is it true?
hello Jeff, please can you explain if RF is always having the same backhand grip or he changes it depending on the situation?...and what kind of a grip is that? many thanks
hrabmv my guess is that his grip is different on first serve return compared to groundstroke. He may alter it slightly in clay or slow courts but my guess is that it stays the same
+Nicolas Ponder Hey Nic, it is crucial to hit the ball way out in front as a one hander. Ideally your arm is totally straight when making contact with the ball. The solution for this is an early preparation of the backhand. Right after you have noticed that the ball comes to your backhand, turn your shoulders. Then run to the ball. You must have set up the shot before the ball bounces! When you are behind the ball you just have to pull the trigger. Another issue is making late contact because of hitting the late ONLY (after you set up the shot early with a proper unit turn). Try this: You say "tip" when the ball bounces on your side of the court and "top" when you make contact. Say this loud! Tip and top must follow each other naturally, but immediately. ;) If you are a more advanced player, they may have told you to push off the ground with the shot. This is correct and creates power, but timing is more difficult. When I have not played for a long time and lack timing, I do not do this. I stay low with the shot until I feel comfortable. In doing so I achieve a better timing, good depth, because I get under the ball easier. :) Last tip: When trading shots be aware if you feel relaxed and hitting or if you rush your shots for not hitting late. If you rush your shots, go further back from the baseline to buy you more time. If you feel comfy just get closer to the line.
This is more like a Gasquet backhand But Wawrinka, Federer and Thiem are all using a different backswing. This guy's backswing is more topspin. But the one hander that beats Nadal is flat and down the line.
Plenty of things to learn, you won't learn by watching ✋ on perfect way to learn very interesting video love it.l will practice and practice again and again until you are satisfied.🎾🎾🎾⚾

QUESTION: Any tips on how to have better timing when to hit the ball with a Single hand backhand?
Thanks!

Practice.

+cleanplasticchild Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice does. :)
It is good. Good info about relaxing the hand.
Thomas Tessier thank you! Let me know how it goes

I don’t often play vs Rafa so I should be ok 😂😎😉
Not too tight. Not too loose. Thanks?
Bob Usualis you are welcome!
