Happy holidays to everyone! Just a quick pondering here. Why does it seem as if academics tend to dismiss the role and work of women running households, teaching/raising children, and managing daily lives and matters of their families? That's probably one of the most important roles in society if you think deeply about it. Military and government and paid employment is not all that matters.
She merely stated the likely sphere of activity of women of the era. I heard nothing dismissive about her answer. The channel deals with matters of religion in the time of Jesus and it's pretty clear that the majority of leaders in politics, business, academia, and religious life were men.
Could you please be more specific. Were people being genocided during Herod’s time. Back then the Romans came to call a large area Syria-Palestina. Palestina is Latin for Philistines. Perhaps you’re using the word genocide in the way left wing loons use it today. October 7 2023, 6000 Muslims from Gaza and Israel began burning, burning to death, raping, raping to death, beheading, shooting and kidnapping over 1200 Israeli civilians with intent to continue until all Jews were eradicated from their homeland. These murderous primitives had the intention of wiping out Jews: genocide. Israel responded to this event by fighting back, and in so doing have killed around 40000 combatants and non-combatants. Left wing loons and crazed antisemites try to contort this into extensions of their own sense of victimhood, but you might have a different view of this matter. Islam, Muslims, Shiites, Sunnis, left wing loons, right wing antisemites, all have a wish to exterminate Jews entirely. I’m open to being persuaded by good arguments. Tell me about your genocide.
If I were God and wanted humans to know me and have a relationship with me, I wouldn't make one brief appearance to one small group of people in one small area of the planet, not write anything down, but instead leave it to various anonymous writers to tell my story through a collection of literary works that at turns are literal, and allegorical, and sometimes either/or, depending on who is reading it, where they're reading it, and when they're reading it. Jesus could read. In Luke 4, he began his public ministry by reading from the Torah, which would have been in Hebrew, from the Book of Isaiah... “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” And He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”” Luke 4:16-21 LSB bible.com/bible/3345/luk.4.16-21.LSB The expression of doubt by the esteemed scholar as to whether Jesus could read is rather bemusing, based on that NT Scripture alone. Funny, I always assumed Herod was a title because there were multiple of them. Never even occurred to me it was just some jerk naming all his kids after himself.
Sounds like Herod the Great got a bad rap. The Gospel accuses him of slaughtering babies when no evidence suggests this ever occurred. Meanwhile, he oversaw the building of the Second Temple and many other building projects that benefitted the people.
The miracle working New Testament Jesus never existed. A wandering Jewish preacher named Yeshua who believed the end of the world was imminent and was executed for stirring up the people probably did.

Thank you for bringing us this interesting and informative interview with Prof. Jodi Magness. It was a delight to hear her. For more than a dozen years I have been buying and enjoying Bart’s courses from The Great Courses organization. Foolishly I assumed Jodi’s courses were covering the same ground. I see now how much I have missed. Jody’s insights as an archaeologist help to illuminate Bart’s insights as a (reformed) minister and religious scholar. Obviously, both are great historians as well, and they bring to their subject a refreshing enthusiasm that is absolutely contagious. My deepest thanks to both Bart and Jodi for helping me, and I assume all of us, to understand the origins of the Judeo-Christian religion. Whenever either of them answers one of Megan’s excellent questions, I sense that I am receiving the distilled benefit of a lifetime of study and reflection.
Guest would like middle east to be at peace? I'd advice her to listen to Rev. Munther Isaac (christian priest from betlehem) and his x-mass sermons from last year and this one. "It is hypocrisy to not use the word gen*cide. There is no discussion, this is a gen*cide." Then she wouldn't be hesitant to call Palestine "Palestine". But I am sure she and Bart KNOWS the truth just won't make any statement, carefully trying to avoid it. Do they really have so much to loose? 😔
Why does everybody think Jesus was poor and illiterate? The gospels say he was a "tecton". That means Builder. Like a plumber or an electrician would be today. He had Four Brothers. Does anybody know a family of five plumbers or electricians that are poor?
@arfived4 I didn't say wealthy. It just stands to reason that a woman with five sons and two daughters would live better than a woman with one son. There doesn't have to be a middle class. But there would definitely be some people much more better off than others. Some of Jesus's followers were fishermen. That means they had boats large enough to fish on the Sea of Galilee. They weren't fishing for food, they were fishing for profit. When they were in the ship and Jesus calmed the waters, that ship was big enough to carry 13 people. And as I'm sure any boat owner will tell you, boats ain't cheap. Matthew was a tax collector. I'm pretty sure those guys didn't live hand to mouth. All I'm saying is, we don't have a reason to believe Jesus was an illiterate day laborer.
@@billcook7285 You're projecting your assumptions about the modern world onto the world of two millennia ago. This has been researched, and the material is there if you want to read it, which I would encourage anyone who has an interest to do. The ancient economy, when you get into it, is nothing like the modern economy, and we have every reason to believe that a craftsman from a backwater in Galilee would be an illiterate day laborer.
Jesus Christ was born at Bethlehem at the end of June, 5 Before Christ. He lived outside Herod's dominated land until 6 CE. They came to Jerusalem for ritual purposes and also for the census. After that, they migrated to Nazareth. His ministry started at the age of 30 and left the earth in the middle of July, 28 CE.
@Age_of_Magpie interesting. i take my cue (source) from the birth of the second Christ Easter Sunday 1996, inside a 32 year old host ( the woman cloaked in the Sun - born the day the Sun Newspaper was ressurected, in Europe and the same year as the Ranger 7 spacecraft). I assumed a 2000 year anniversary simply for convenience given it's a second Christ. hence the date of 15/09/-4, and deceased 28AD. The new Christ is 28 now, but i think he comes online 2028 at 32. I thnk. its a. straight hot swap. Soul migration to the second. Note that 28-70 (fall of second temple) is 42.Not only is that the answer to hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy, but it's also Isiah 42. Nothing is coincidence.
@@nothinghere1996 Yes, you are right; nothing is a coincidence. I have no knowledge of what you said. I should look it up. There are many prophecies about the second coming of the Messiah. Not the second messiah. I used two thousand years differently. 28 CE+40 lunar years repentance time+2000 years= January 2066 CE. you could look at the end of the Age of the Magpie; it should be free today.
I think it's because they are talking about a larger area than just Judaea: Samaria, Galilee, Perea... "Palestine", though it didn't come into use until later, includes the total area.
Some historical facts: In ancient times, the land was home to numerous civilizations, including the Canaanites, Philistines, Jebusites, and others. It was also at times dominated by the Egyptians. These indigenous peoples inhabited the region long before the arrival of the Israelites who established the kingdoms of Israel and Judah on parts of today's Palestine.
Fact verify: historian mentions Jesus Apostles miracles Paul anywhere in any historical record from that era. Pliny the elder was the main Roman historian from that exact time period makes no mention. BC= before conspiracy AD = after deception.
@@Nudnik1 You're the one with the burden to "verify" the "conspiracy" and "deception." I don't have the burden to disprove you. You have to prove your case. This lesson in logic was free
Not really sure what your point is. Most of the stories about Jesus are fictional (especially the Nativity stories), but the man himself certainly existed.

So God was executed by the Romans?
I think you came to the wrong place honey. 😂😂😂😂 yes yes yes he was a god 😂
Why does everybody think Jesus was poor and illiterate? The gospels say he was a "tecton". That means Builder. Like a plumber or an electrician would be today. He had Four Brothers. Does anybody know a family of five plumbers or electricians that are poor?
Artisans were not wealthy in antiquity. What may well be true in the modern world, was not true then.
there was a video on that from Tabor recently that goes into a lot of detail.
He was born 15/09/-4
When Vespasian started the campaign to Jerusalem(July, 28 CE+40 lunar years), the kingdom of God was taken from the Israelites.
@@Age_of_Magpie you cannot look it up. Only i know, and it's not in print. And yes, the Isrealites lost their God. They killed a Levite High Priest.
Why do you keep calling it Palestine? No such place existed back then. It was the homeland of the Jews.
@TartempionLampion just curious about "arrival of the Israelites". From where?
I believe that was the larger province that Rome named, and this is history from that time.
yes, there was. the romans renamed the area palestine as punishment afterward it put down the jewish rebellions (60s CE to 150 or so)
This guy is a counter tenor. Yikes!
Fact verify: historian mentions Jesus Apostles miracles Paul anywhere in any historical record from that era.
Pliny the elder was the main Roman historian from that exact time period makes no mention.

Not really sure what your point is. Most of the stories about Jesus are fictional (especially the Nativity stories), but the man himself certainly existed.
A very effective communicator who would be even more effective if she took 'right' and 'you know' out of her vocabulary.

Unsubbed over Jodi Magness. You should be so lucky! Jodi is world class.

Jodi goes to explain something but has to explain 2 other things before they expand the thing they are trying to explain.
