  • Porsche and Lucasfilm collaborated on a six-week project called "The Designer Alliance" to make an original starfighter design for the Star Wars universe. The final design really doesn't fit in the Star Wars universe, so I thought I'd try fixing it.

      I really like that he made the wings folding, it would make sense on a "space aircraft carrier" sort of concept. And honestly, before I got to that part of the video, I was thinking those wingtips could be removed, Star Wars has never really shown aerodynamic designs to be very prevalent.
      EDIT: corrected a syntax error.

    • @LupusAries
      @LupusAries 4 года назад +7

      @@ThatConfused1 Yeah it fits right in with SC, and EC Henry's design also works better from a piloting perspective.
      The Canopy drove me nuts on the original and mentioned that on a rather lengthy critique there.
      His one is much better for visibility, both since there are no obstructive elements on the frame, as well as the Cockpit being place higher in the Aircraft.
      The seating position of the original is very low, which is seen as a good position in a sports car, but is horrible in a fighter, because it limits vision into all directions.
      And the windscreen is not as steeply inclined, reducing glare, especially from the instrument panel, and visual distortion.
      Still don't like the front end, there is a reason why pretty much all fighters, including those in star wars have a tapered front end.....and that is drag.
      This design still has a bit too much frontal area, but overall it works much better and looks star wars.
      It also makes more sense, that light grey is visible but not as much as the bare metal look of the original.
      When the B-17s and P-51Ds flew bare metal at the end of WW2, the glare off them could be seen, on a good day, for about 150 km (roughly 80-ish nautical miles or 93-ish statute miles.)
      That is generally a huge tactical disadvantage and the USAAF only did it n the late war, because they wanted draw the Luftwaffe out, to fight them. The Luftwaffe then was mainly ill trained young pilots of under 100 hours before combat, even less than 50 sometimes down to 20 hours of flight time before their first combat mission, going up against well trained US pilots with often 200-400 hours before their first combat.
      So to the USAAF it made sense, to a small rebel force, it does not.

    • @control_the_pet_population
      @control_the_pet_population 2 года назад +32

      I will respectfully disagree. He isn't arguing for a "Star Wars design language"... he just wanted to make the thing look like it came from the same company that designed the X-Wing. He starts out in the first two minutes stating that Star Wars doesn't have a set "design language" and shows a good half dozen examples.... then spends the rest of the video directly contradicting his opening. When you are talking about a vast fantasy galaxy with thousands of civilizations set light years apart from each other, an overarching design consistency / language is absurd on it's face. There is nothing consistent between a Nebula B Frigate vs a Naboo Royal Starship vs a Trade Federation Droid Ship vs a Lamba Class Shuttle that screams "these came from a similar schools of design / engineering" apart from maybe thruster thingies and windows.
      I'd have no issues with his approach if he actually did just state that "I wanted to make this look like it came from the same company that designed the X-Wing"... but to claim some deeper understanding of "Star Wars starship design language" where it's clear no common language exists is just... ridiculous. Sure, the rebels and Empire have their unique schools of design, which makes perfect sense... as they would have their own suppliers / designers / engineers / etc. But to claim some random design isn't "Star Wars enough" when it could have came from some barely encountered civilization in some far flung corner of the Outer Rim is just completely antithetical to what Star Wars is. Sure, the major players have their "design languages" but to speak for the entire galaxy? It's silly.

    • @ilove401
      @ilove401 2 года назад +80

      @@control_the_pet_population If you actually paid attention to what he said after the 1 minute mark, you'd understand why he contradicted himself; there is no standard design language, but there exists a sort of 'style' that most people will claim 'Oh, that's a Star Wars ship!' which is what Porshe and Lucasfilm *attempted* to do, but failed.
      Star Wars ships, to me at least, have an aura of rustic antiquity to them. Yes, there are outliers like the Naboo Royal Starship, but most ships in the series look old, with hard edges and 80s-esqe technofluff slapped onto them. Incom, Gozanti, CEC, the Mon Calla ships, and of course the Imperial ships by Kuat, they all share some similarities while not sticking to a strict 'code' of sorts. That's the whole point of the video, which you missed.
      If you put the original design next to a bunch of Star Wars designs, it looks out of place. You are right that it mostly looks like an Incom ship, but he could have chosen any other manufacturer to fit the aesthetic while keeping in mind the Star Wars style. "It looks like it belongs in Star Citizen" is bang on.

    • @control_the_pet_population
      @control_the_pet_population 2 года назад +10

      @@ilove401 We will agree to disagree. What you described is a "style" that is so vague as to be meaningless. Yes, there are areas where similarities exist. The rebels starfighters for instance are busier with the greebles, while the imperial designs are cleaner, more angular and geometric... and they each clearly convey the idea of common lineage.. But Kuat and Incom does not equal the Star Wars galaxy as a whole. So outside of those two warring factions / design schools, there just isn't anything holding vague notions of a "style" together. I stand by my original point, he wasn't trying to make it look like it belonged in Star Wars, he made it look like it belonged in the Incom showroom. Nothing wrong with that, besides one being an actual fresh take and the other being much more bland and derivative, but to each their own.
      Naboo ships look like Art Deco hood ornaments from the 1920s, Trade Federation with the spindly insect looking droid fighters have zero in common with anything else, that goofy prequel landing ship that Yoda flew around in... the one with the big glass gun turrets sticking out of the side... didn't share a lick of similarities with anything else... The Genosian solar sail ship that Dooku flew looked like something lifted directly from the pages of Dune and nothing else is Star Wars looked anything like it... the stolen "space yacht" from Last Jedi looked like it was kitbashed from the 1970s Buck Rogers starfighter... and this is just three minutes of rambling off the top of my head. None of those previous examples, with maybe the exception of the goofy prequel landing ship, had anything remotely designed to look "antiquated" or "rustic"... Again... he wanted to make it look like it was from the same design team that made the X-Wing... cool... but there is no overarching "Star Wars" style... designs shoot off into weird tangents every time we are introduced to a new civilization... and I hope it stays that way.

    • @ilove401
      @ilove401 2 года назад +41

      @@control_the_pet_population Again, as with what EC said in the video, the original Porsche design looks to 'futuristic'. Another way of thinking about it would probably be trying to come up with a ship design if you were sent back to the 1970s. Times have changed, but the aesthetic of Star Wars remains largely the same.
      Agree to disagree, sure. It's a big galaxy, but ironically, the ship Porsche designed looks like it belongs in a completely different galaxy. I think EC's design wasn't just 'copying Incom', it (for me) incorporated the Star Wars aesthetic a lot better just in general.

    • @control_the_pet_population
      @control_the_pet_population 2 года назад +7

      @ilove I just find that line of thinking so limiting for a vast fantasy universe. Here on boring old Earth, our automobile and aircraft designs have advanced quite a bit since the 1970s ... There has clearly been an evolution, correct? Why wouldn't or couldn't the same hold true in the SW galaxy? Just from a simple lore perspective, having the original Porsche design being an Incom product is something I would find much more interesting... the team that designed the original X-Wing in 15 BBY is long since retired... and a new team with new advancements and a new approach has been brought on board. "It needs X-wing engine pods to look more Star Warsy" is boring in my opinion.

      I think they're both great designs.
      Obviously EC's has a much more Star War(sy?) feel to it. But that doesn't make it an inherently superior ship.
      The original design is a work of art in it's own perspective. They're both made by talented people, and are great ships in their own right. The original keeps an extremely overtly sci-fi feel, and it maintains the base design that EC uses. If it was bad, so is EC's. EC took said design and made it appropriate for Star Wars, on the other hand the original design would be better suited for other Sci-fi series. I can't really argue with you on opinion, but know this;
      They're both great designs, and I feel like you, and people like you have this really childish; "we hate big company" mindset.
      Apologies if that assumption is wrong.

    • @control_the_pet_population
      @control_the_pet_population 2 года назад

      Well, he made it "fit" into the Incom universe not the Star Wars universe as a whole. Star Wars is a vast fictional galaxy with thousands of civilizations that none of us have ever seen because they haven't been written yet. He just took the thing and made it look like it came from the X-Wing design team. I find it dull to be honest. The original ship could potentially come from some rarely seen civilization with their own approach using design details that fans had never seen before... seems pretty obvious that different ways of doing things would be expected in such a vast galaxy... But nope, it's a "fix" that essentially boils down to "Star Wars design language = X-Wing". I generally like his work, but this one is just so much less interesting overall than the original design.

    I think you've done a fantastic job w/ your version. It immediately evokes an Incom Corp feel vs the Porsche design. I especially like the gun placement. Incom tends to avoid a long wing w/o using it FOR something. The Z-95 and T-65B fighters use that to spread the fire profile, as you've done here.
    And even if you do have an astromech socket, it doesn't have to be populated on your promotional brocheure.
