Sonic 1: Reverse Curse is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by Campbellsonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been cursed! Now, when he collects rings, his rings counter counts DOWN instead of up! And if he collects a ring when he has a counter of 0, it's lights out. Sonic 1 never seemed so... Intimidating.

Collecting rings:
Normally (no shield nor invincibility): you lose 1 ring per ring you collect
W/ sheild: you don’t gain nor lose any rings
Invincibility: you gain 1 ring per ring you collect

I get how it works now with the ring count-
If Sonic has a temporary invincibility shield and collects loose rings (not hitting ring boxes) the ring counter can and will go up.
If Sonic has a 1-hit shield the ring count won’t change up or down if Sonic touches any loose rings.
If Sonic has no shield then his ring count drops for touching rings

Somehow I didn't really see anything happen. Even the ones at the areas near the beginning

I think I figured it out, normally when you get a ring it lowers your ring count, when you have a shield getting rings does nothing and when you have invincibility it returns to normal, until it wears off.
also the emeralds are in moniters now as getting 50 rings is most likely to hard
Now we need Mario with this curse, and no I'm not talking a Super Mario World. I'm talking about Super Mario Bros. 1.
But this one is different, The music is c-minor and hacked a little and instead of starting up with 0 coins: coins will mean health x 99.
So like with Sonic grabbing rings, Mario will die if he grabs a coin on 0% of hp.

The Sonic 3D Blast songs sound a little weird with Sonic 1's more K-sounding percussion than the P-sounding percussion heard in Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
i do like the inclusion of the Sonic 3 Sonic sprite in this rom hack it shows maturity of a highly experienced classic sonic player on how Challenging but not unfair this hack is

I never saw the ring counter go down...
Because the player rarely got rings normally. Shields protect you from the curse, and invincibility makes the ring counter go up. Having neither of those makes your ring counter go down, and if you grab rings when you have 0 rings, you die

So how are you supposed to know when rings add to your ring count, take away from it, or do neither?
Shield makes the rings do nothing to you, invulnerability makes the rings behave normally, and having neither makes the rings take away from your count... and kill you at 0 rings.

Shields only protect you from the curse, but invincibility, and certain monitors will add to your ring count
ContextEffects at the Labyrinth Zone I can imagine what must be going through Eggman's mind...
"Ah,that blasted hedgehog! He not only got through the drowning trap I set,but he also got ahead
of me!! BLAST YOU SONIC!!!!!" Sonic would probably look back and wave yelling "Hey Eggman! No one likes a sore loser! See ya in the Starlight Zone, Hover - Head! Hahahahahaaaa!"
