I remember as a kid in India, a team of people come to your house and make them at your home with very basic equipment. It was a fun process to watch. I don't think they even had as much equipment as shown in this video. But they always came out great.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. (*^▽^)/ Yes, the equipment in the video is very heavy and definitely not portable. However, they make a much stronger stitch than can be done by hand. Must last many years.
Hello Stella, Thank you for your interest. While we do have certified organic cotton available with an up-charge, we do not use this standard in all of our products as it does not perform as well as our high grade cotton. Certified organic cotton mats faster, doesn't shed moisture as well, is less resilient and doesn't re-fluff as well and, as it requires more cotton to fill to proper levels, results in a slightly heavier futon. We use a very high grade natural cotton in our products that performs extremely well as it resists matting and re-fluffs well. If you wish to have certified organic cotton, please email us and we can arrange this for you.
After months of research of various companies, I think I'm ready to order from your company. I just need to figure out which Japanese size corresponds most closely with an American Full size mattress in terms of length and width.
Hello Brady, thank you for your interest in our authentic Japanese futon. You can find all of our futon dimensions here: sizes.FutonBedsFromJapan.comfutonbedsfromjapan.com
do it make voices if you sleep on it and move ? like khish khish voices I bought one from germany it was annoying to sleep on it because so many voices if you move
tunisian-in-Germany peaceful Muslim Interesting question. The fabric in both our futon and futon covers is all 100% cotton. The sounds you describe seem like something you would experience with a silky polyester fabric. I've never experienced anything like that sleeping in our futon.
Thank you for your interest. You definitely can order the shikibuton & kakebuton as a set. In fact, you get a discounted price for the kakebuton when you order it with the shikibuton. You can order the kakebuton and covers all from the shikibuton page in the Add-On section on the individual product page. Start here: www.futonbedsfromjapan.com/futon-shikibuton-mattress/ Then click on the fabric pattern you like and it will take you to the product page.
It is important to regularly hang your shikibuton in the morning sun for a couple of hours so that it can shed moisture and re-fluff. While it is hanging you can remove the white cotton cover and wash it. You would then have a beautiful shikibuton hanging on your balcony. Also, if you order the matching kakebuton "quilt", our covers for them have a window for you to see the fabric pattern as well. If you visit Japan you would notice that futon hang outside homes and apartments of every economic level. Having a beautiful fabric pattern is important to us.
Thank you for visiting our channel, Liz. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ You certainly can have one ... if you place an order from our site. FutonBedsFromJapan.com (We'll ship it directly to your front door.)
I’m having trouble seeing your whole site cause my phone is lame haha but can you tell me how the shipping works? Looks like it’s free but just wondering if fedex will drop it off and add their own shipping charge?
The pricing on our website includes shipping. We typically only use FedEx for non USA shipments. FedEx NEVER adds additional charges. That said, at time of delivery, often the shipper (FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.) does collect Import Fees and VAT on behalf of a country's Customs Department. If you live outside of the USA, you can expect that your country's Customs Department will likely charge Import Fees and Sales Tax (VAT). This is something outside of our control. However, we do pay the actual shipping costs. If you live in the USA, the price you pay when purchasing is all you pay.
I'm curious: are all futons the same, or do you account for body weight? I purchased a futon some time ago and I was offered different types. The traditional one (I believe a thin layer of cotton) was terribly hard for me (especially for my glutes) and the one I ended up with was twice as thick and was a sandwich of layers of linen and cocos fiber and it was twice as thick. I sleep pretty well on it, but even that is terribly hard for most Europeans.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, edi. All of our futon are the same thickness. We do add a little additional cotton for our foreign market, however, this is limited because it is not good to make a futon too thick or the cotton cannot shed moisture properly at the center. This is a problem with many western made "futon". They make them too thick thinking that adding cushioning inside the futon will make it more comfortable. Actually this just causes the cotton to mat because it remains perpetually wet. It also results in a futon too heavy to hang for re-fluffing. If you feel you need additional cushioning, the correct thing is to do as we do here in Japan and add a trifold pad or other cushioning beneath your futon. This way you have a futon that is not too thick and heavy to hang properly to shed moisture. I hope this is helpful.
+Nobuscus2012 Very sorry for the incredibly slow reply! Somehow I've totally missed your comment. *embarrassed* Our futon are made at a small, family-run factory ran by a true Futon Master. Master Ike and his family are our neighbors and their factory is a 2 minute walk from our house in Kochi, Japan.
Can I also use my current (traditional western style) fitted sheets with the shikibuton? I don’t see why not but thought to ask in case it doesn’t hold its shape or something
You can use western style sheets, except they are designed to fit thicker mattresses and our dimensions are a bit different. Please check out our size chart here: www.sizes.futonbedsfromjapan.com
Hello Albert, Thank you for your interest. The great news is our customers don't normally pay any import or customs fees to the USA. All pricing on our website includes shipping fees as well.
Sounds great, Mason. Are you going to be visiting Japan? Or staying here for awhile? We do ship directly to your door where ever you live. All pricing on our website includes shipping abroad.
Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately due to the shipping costs involved with shipping the futon from Japan to overseas, it is not practical to offer returns. You would likely spend as much to ship it back to Japan as you've initially paid for your order. Please keep in mind, while shikibuton sleep is more firm, you can make a shikibuton as soft as you need by adding additional cushioning underneath it, if necessary.
FutonBedsFromJapan are you quite sure they're beds and not art? They are beautiful! I have to have a set I can't stand regular western beds anymore. Hmm......slight snag! I can't seem to see a shipping option to England (UK) I hope we're not excluded.

Hi there, I have a major question about these. I am 6'5" at 380 pounds, and in my current bed I cannot sleep on my back without horrid, horrible pain due to the lack of support. Is it even possible to sleep on a japanese futon at my body proportions without ruining it?
Hello Electric Pickle official, Great question. First off, with your height we definitely would need to make a custom length for you, which is something we do often for tall people. We have many larger-framed people with back pain from western beds that sag contacting us. This is definitely a common problem. Of course we can't say definitively if a shikibuton will work for you as people and their back issues vary and have different origins, and we're not medical professionals. Also, people have differing sleep habits and expectations. However, that said, we have gotten feedback from our customers who have back issues and they often say our shikibuton have been the perfect solution and they've gotten the best nights of sleep in years. This will definitely be a much more firm bed for you and you may also need to add a little cushioning underneath as well such as a trifold pad (just search amazon for "trifold pad" and you find pads similar to what we sometimes use here in Japan.) Please check out this post on our websites blog as well: www.tatami.futonbedsfromjapan.com as you might find this helpful. You can contact us at Support@futonbedsfromjapan.com for pricing on a custom length shikibuton. Arigatou!
@Dirk Hoffmann Hello Dirk, If you feel you need a trifold pad, we would recommend getting one the is more firm and not too thick. 2 inches/5 cm or 3"/8 cm at the most. Something more like an exercise mat than a sleeping pad. The type of surface your have underneath your shikibuton has a big impact on the feel of it.
