I have not buyed a digital show or movie since sonic to bundle came out that was my last thing i believe back then roku moved just swopped over the vudu for movies tv shows
I watched a RUclips video of a man that worked for Redbox. He filled the machines and repaired them. He has cases of movies and games stacked in his hallway and no one is communicating with him about them. Redbox does not seem concerned about the physical crap. They did owe him about $900 in mileage. They were also collecting money for the employees health insurance and 401ks and not sending the money to those things. People was paying for health insurance, thought they had health coverage and did not. Some people had some health crisis during that time and now unable to pay for hospital bills and such. One lady her husband had open heart surgery. In her case I think I would talk to a lawyer. But if there is no money?
Unfortunate their killing all physical content eventually same thing happened with CDs only thing now you find is vinyl records lol went ass backwards there .
I have all our favorite DVDS and CDS because I knew this day would come. Remember what Warren Buffett said, if I can't walk up and touch it I'm not investing in it.
I HAVE MY OWN PERSON MEDIA PLAYER - It has over 3,000 movies in 4k/1080p and 140 complete T.V. shows. I can watch them anywhere from any device. I also share with family and friends. No physical media. It is like having your own personal Netflix service with all your favorite content that will never disappear.
I have no confidence in any digital content. I have a collection of physical DVD and Blue Ray that is always available until my last player fails. Unfortunately, I see the content providers eventually discontinuing the sale of physical media and then jacking up the cost to stream digital.
I was buying digital for a while and realized what's stopping them from taking it away? Like the michael jackson episode from the simpsons. Or they start "editing" movies that deem unfit for current culture. Went back to physical and if it has a digital code, I'll do it. Games are going to same route.
I'll miss Redbox. I used it for years to rent and rip games for my jailbroken PS4. Saved me quite a bit of money by not having to pay $60 for a video game. Rent, Rip, Return.
I still buy the physical copies with the digital code. I prefer it this way, as it gives me a copy that I can use anytime, no worries about Internet or what streaming app it's on...
I also want an update on the WBD free streaming app. Any chance you can find more information on that? It seems like they just decided to go with licensing out their free channels instead, unfortunately...
The first time I 'purchased' an electronic copy of a movie on-line, I realized that the media had a shelf-life that wasn't in my control. So I created a policy to use streaming to rent and preview/pre-screen movies. Then, for any movies/series I watched that I wanted to own, I purchased the physical media. This may not seem cost effective, but I use what I call the 90/90 rule: 90 days after release to streaming to be able to rent at the reduced rate, then 90 days after release of physical media for the price to drop.
Two words: Physical Media. It's becoming more popular again, probably for this very reason. I refuse to buy movies or music in digital format. I do own a lot of games in digital format simply because it's hard to argue with buying the digital version during a Steam sale for $3 versus buying a physical copy for $50 or more. You can rip your CDs and DVDs if you want digital versions. I keep multiple copies of my music in MP3, FLAC and WAV formats. I also keep an ISO copy of the disc itself. I don't bother with copying my DVDs since I just don't really care about them. I'm not much of a movie person.
So funny! I literally just spoke to my husband that going forward I want to start buying way more physical media because I don’t want to be tied down to the streaming sites
This is one of the reason why I don't like buying digital content. You are buying the content at the same price as the physical copy. With the physical copy I have access to it until it gets destroyed and I don't need internet to watch it. The digital copy you only have access to it while the company you brought it from is still in business and allows you to access the content, you also have to have internet to watch it.
1st off. I love your content and have recommended it to ALL of my Cord Cut Friends & Fam, liked it on my various RUclips channels & will in fact share it with my 6 X accounts as I feel it is an integral Asset to All members of The Post Cable/Rental Revolution. A warning to all Digital content owners on various current streams. A few years ago When WuDu purchased Fandango I lost approximately 25 "classic" movies I had purchased on Fandango ranging from The 1st 2 Wick Titles to 5 of The Aliens Saga, Baby Jane, Dr Schivago, etc. Along with Documentaries of my family's history including my Grandfathers Delivery of the Hiroshima Bomb, Uncles Protest of Vietnam & proponent of PTSD care, my mothers Ted Bundy Connection along with our Ancestors tie to the slave trade in Louisiana specifically with The Rosedown Plantation & blood line that includes Jefferson Davis, George Washington & Clyde Barrow on a backwards note. All of these films are not brought up to brag of my somewhat negative family history but to let others know to find a way to back up whatever they buy. But buy it now because as I attempt to write my Family genealogy for a Documentary to Denounce are negative roll in slavery these Golden Gems of info & references are lost forever despite numerous tries and denials by Fandango & WUDU that I ever owned them. Be careful. As for this channel. Thank you. You are a Godsend that will help people avoid not only losing cinematic history but as in my case historical Including family history that is nearly unrecoverable. Sincerely Chris G. Orlando, FL
This is honestly a reason to not buy media digitally. There is just so much that can happen for people to not be able to access their purchases. If it is something I care enough about to purchase outright, I just assume buy the physical release if possible. At least with that as long as I don't lose it and it doesn't get damaged, I can watch it.
I cracked up when you said, "when are we going to hear info on the Venmu sports service..... I wanted to just say, I've been here since you started this channel.
Only buy Movies Anywhere as at least that has multiple outlets, but there is no guarantee with digital. However, there is no guarantee with physical either. Many of my Warner DVDs I bought in the mid 2000s no longer play as Warner had a manufacturer issue with many discs.
If you purchased a digital copy of a movie and lose it, you are perfectly justified in sailing the high seas. Just get a good VPN for a month, and download all that you had stolen from you.
I bought and lost movies and a bunch of songs from a service I can’t even remember its name. When the company was closing they allowed me to import them into iTunes. After about two years they were all blocked. When I contacted apple customers service they said they couldn’t confirm the licenses anymore and so blocked them. Physical or nothing for me
You don't need a VPN if you download from a public location or just use your phone and upload to your computer later.... as long as you don't have an iPhone which doesn't allow torrent apps.
I still buy physical discs for movies, and I'll watch them multiple times when I want the best picture and sound and when I don't have to worry about a streaming service pulling a video from their service.
Nintendo ripped off all of the online gamers who bought online games for Wii years ago. When the original Wii was no longer the flagship, they quietly closed the Wii Store and when people logged in and looked for their purchased online games, they were gone.
I don't buy digital media. If you don't own the show or movie, on some media or device that is in your possession, there is no guarantee that you will, forever, have access to it. Having to stream, from some company's servers, makes you subject to the whims of possible access changes... or them going out of business and taking your purchase with them. You don't own, what you don't own.
I very rarely rent anything digital, but I don't have a problem with that. The company isn't going to go out of business before I watch it. But I would never *buy* a digital asset (unless maybe if I could download it DRM free, and I don't think anyone does that). After getting rid of dozens of CDs back in the 2010s, I'm back to buying physical media if I want something to keep.
Yeah, I rarely do either. If I get them free, included with a deal or a Blu-ray I may buy, then I'll upload it. I've never been much of a person to go back and watch stuff again once I've watched it once.
Up until now I have only bought 1, just 1 digital movie and that was Barbarian for $5. I buy everything physical and when the time comes that all movies go digital there is absolutely no point for me to buy a movie again. I’ll just watch whatever they have on certain streaming services
I was thinking about using them and this bankruptcy then closure happened. I was looking into getting a blu-ray player. Now I have less reason. There's no place to rent them. Don't want to spend millions buying them only to see them three times. And even the libraries are getting rid of their collections to make space. In some cases they've moved to a central library and in other cases they purged the collection so it's less. It depends on your area. I was going to try to get away from depending on these subscription services. Without having to buy everything.
@@alanvallazza9781 See if your library is going to an on-line service for movies. Kanopy is the big one, my local library has it. Good selection of movies.
Question for Luke: Unrelated to todays topic, but, I have been waiting for what seems like forever for TCM (Turner Classic Movies) to release a standalone app with full content…any word on that? (I know they have some content on HBO Max but I tried it and it’s nowhere near as good as the full TCM channel.) I believe they are a holdout to try keep people subscribed to cable, but now that cable tv is really on a downturn, I’m hoping finally to hear they’re going to let cord cutters subscribe. I think by opening themselves up to allow cord cutters, they’d really be able to expand their audience because the is such a niche interest, and there’s no other channel that really compares to TCM. I’d love to know if you’ve heard anything about that. Thanks!
I'm buying DVD BlueRay when I see them at garage/yard sales and at thrift stores - worst case I already have it - then I'm out a couple bucks or can trade / give it away...
As far as ads and Netflix are concerned. I subscribe for only half a year on the "Ad free Plan," which would be about the same amount as if I had subscribed to the "With ads" plan for a full year. The other six months, I'll just play video games, because so far they don't have annoying intrusive ads in that entertainment.
Between Plex (with Plex Pass) and my HD HomeRun tunner - there's a ton of value there. - I'm also only buying physical media these days unless I KNOW I'll only watch something one time then I'll rent it on-line. The only exception there would be if the rental is close to the on-line buy price but even still it's usually pretty close to the physical media copy price so I'll go that route....
Digital all day every day The reason is because Shows/Movies can be pulled or removed just look at some episodes of The Simpsons and the aspect ratio is different then a digital version You can have spotty internet or internet is down for awhile but with digital you don’t have to worry about any of that So for me Digital will always be king
What’s going to happen when 8k and 10k come out? People will then have to upgrade again so I don’t buy physical media anymore for that reason. Why go backwards in technology? I download digital and just stream movies
Have 1086 titles on Vudu and 16 series on Vudu, but I also have over 3000 titles on Physical media VHS,DVD, Blu-ray and a Few Ultra Hi Def titles as well as about 685 titles on Movies Anywhere
My plex library is roughly 3000 titles. I haven't even started on my father's VHS and DVD. There's about 15 giant boxes of VHS and DVD of titles I don't already have. The CDs, cassette, 8-track, reel to reel, a few records and that single spool of wire recording have to wait. There's way too much I have to convert. There's about 7000 pictures to digitize. Not even considering digitizing the books and periodicals.
I've got a few physical DVDs (maybe 40?), but mostly seasonal stuff and things I just personally like watching every few years. Most movies I watch once, maybe twice, but that's it, so no reason to spend the money on a physical copy or deal with the digital 'purchasing' shenanigans.
I just don't worry much about it at all. If for some reason I just have to see a flick that is not available just as it was for the greater share of my life, I don't mind forking over a couple of bucks to theoretically " buy" it for a while. It is likely I will watch it enough to last a lifetime and not miss it if it goes away. I spent months backing up all of my DVD's to my network and they get watched almost never. Frankly, I find more interesting movies posted on RUclips for free anyway.🤔
I rarely buy digital entering l anything. If I get them free, included with a deal or a Blu-ray code I may buy, then I'll upload it. I've never been much of a person to go back and watch stuff again once I've watched it once.
We should have the right to download content that we’ve purchased the TV and movie industry treats a slight criminals not allowing us to download our content that we’ve paid for
Any movie or TV show I want to have unlimited access to, I purchase on Blu-ray and/or UHD. Heck, I've even purchased some DVDs recently and have been surprised at how well they look when upscaled via my 4K/UHD player.
I used to rent off of RB just to rip the movies for my movie server. DRM got a little unreliable to crack, so I gave up. Now we own 200+ movies purchased off of all the major streamers. Wonder if I could use a video capture card to burn them in hi res?
So it’s illegal for me to pirate movies but it’s legal for these companies to “sell me” digital movies then not continue to give me access or refund me? Yea more laws protecting corporations than the everyday person.
If it is not on one of the streaming services I have then I just don't get to see it. Eventually every major movie will get to streaming, it is just a question of when and where.
I don't buy digital movies etc. I have lost too much content in the past to trust ANY of them. They will find some excuse to pull it and you have to buy it again and don't care. Physical is the only way to go. I just bought a dvd last week and another last month. If it is something I know I will like and watch multiple times I buy it on dvd or sometimes bluray but I prefer dvd.
Personally, at 78 years old I've seen enough adds. I will only pay for services that offer add-free programming. The additional cost of add-free service is worth it to not waste 20% of my time watching adds.
I would use a video capturing device to do video capturing so that I could have a digital copy of it and never have to worry about whether the service goes out of business or not.

One of the downsides to streaming-only media: It can be rescinded at any time.
Notice how the whole streaming thing is turning into "regular old television" with free ad supported services or tiers?
I would drop any platforms that shows ads to me, Its why I dropped cable TV. Too many commercials, and for too long a time.
This is why I prefer to buy my movies on physical media like gasp Blu-ray
Long live physical media!
If the providers put in commercials--don’t want it! That’s another advantage of the hard mediums.
We should have the right to download content that we’ve purchased the TV and movie industry treats a slight criminals not allowing us to download our content that we’ve paid for
You didn't pay for the content. You paid a license to see the content. Sucks, I know.
In other words you rented it.@@jimroscovius
It’s like when blockbuster went busted bc of streaming services and res box coming on the scene in 2009-2011
All you need is a good ad blocker to view it add free but only on a PC not on a Roku, Firestick etc.
That is why I only buy physical media.
Me too! I’m all in on physical media.
@@Musicradio77Network According to Jennifer you keep buying flowers for Dylan Mulvaney.
Buying digital is fine, but only if you can download an .mp4 of your content.
Yep
If they had sold some of the movies from their Redbox I would bought them from their boxes
Someday Red Box will return.
When Turkey's start driving cars.
Before or after Blockbuster? 😉
This is exactly why I would never buy content from any online service. What are you going to do when they stop existing or offering that service?
Blu-rays and DVDs are the best😊😊😊😊
I'm through with paying for anything additional for any streaming service. They just schemes to separate money from my wallet.
Any movie or TV show I want to have unlimited access to, I purchase on Blu-ray and/or UHD. Heck, I've even purchased some DVDs recently and have been surprised at how well they look when upscaled via my 4K/UHD player.
I only buy physical media. I want to own the movies I like to watch.
I own 5 bluray players, an hddvd player, and 2 dvd players. I hope that covers me for the rest of my life.
@@johnsoltau620 I watch my movies on VHS. I just enjoy the experience, the picture quality may not be the best but I dont care.
never bought any movies on streaming. i only bought the dvds and blu rays, so i can still watch those whenever i want 😂😂
I watch all my movies on VHS using my 30 Inch CRT tv I got for free LOL. I occasionally watch DVD's.
@@Warp2090 nice! I have lots of vhs too that I watch
Ive been getting movies from the redbox near me that works still and they havent been taking money out of my account.
Buying digital movies is like buying digital currency it's good when it's good and it's gone when it's gone
Even if they don’t shut down, you need to continue to subscribe to the service to access your purchased media
So did you really “buy” anything? No, you bought a “license” that is only good so long as someone honors it. Meaning you don’t really own it.
Hey Luke I’m not able to see your Philo article I get a 404 error
No I only bought one movie Downton second movie cuz I was to impatient! Its thru Amazon🤞
Short answer they are about to get screwed. Use Audials and tape all the movies so it no longer matters.
I have never bought digital content, minus iTunes (which I no longer buy). Physical media only!
Ads are destroying everything across all platforms and streaming services, I read that users are ditching streaming services do to ads.
Dust off the pirate hat 😂
I only buy dvd or Blu-ray.
I don't buy digital movies etc. I have lost too much content in the past to trust ANY of them. They will find some excuse to pull it and you have to buy it again and don't care.
Physical is the only way to go. I just bought a dvd last week and another last month. If it is something I know I will like and watch multiple times I buy it on dvd or sometimes bluray but I prefer dvd.
what I want from Roku is a new updated streaming box with gigabit wired networking.
I still pick up DVDs's but as soon as I get them I rip them to my Plex.
I wish I could learn how to do that. 😭
Blu Ray still king sadly
HD VHS is the best. Shame not mnay movies ar eon it
I miss dvds
I forsee a lot of the kiosks are going to be busted opened and emptied...
I don't feel safe with digital content at all.
If you stopped buying chocolates for Dylan Mulvaney maybe you could afford digital content.
@@Omar_Zazzle huh?
DVD's are digital content.
I haven't used red boxes 2013 get all my stuff on streaming you know Tubi TV Pluto TV I mean that's all the shows I like😊
We found the 1 person using tubi tv and pluto tv
I only buy physical media if i really like the movie.
Personally, at 78 years old I've seen enough adds. I will only pay for services that offer add-free programming. The additional cost of add-free service is worth it to not waste 20% of my time watching adds.
I have never bought or rented through any of these
How many times can you watch the same movie?.....🤔🤦♂
If you purchase a movie you don't actually own it
I just stream stuff, don’t buy. I have no reason to watch something over and over again unless it’s the Big Labowski. 😂
I buy physical media or nothing.
Turns out that by shutting down, I feel like the people at Redbox have become some of the top salespeople of physical media.
Aaannnddd.....its gone.
I would use a video capturing device to do video capturing so that I could have a digital copy of it and never have to worry about whether the service goes out of business or not.
