- The HORRIFYING Reality of Time Loops
In Stars and time is the first game to ever make me cry, and it has everything to do with how it handles time loops.
Now time loops are a super interesting genre, but in a game like 12 minutes or a movie like the Edge of tomorrow, we dont see any mental consequences, the main characters staying completely sane throughout the loops, and only really getting physically harmed.
In Stars and Time looks and that and spits on it, as this game tries to show the mental torment time loops can bring upon our main character, to the point where they break.

Today im taking a deep dive into the wholesome and horrifying world of the indie game In Stars and Time, trying to find out how its plot twist is so effective.
This video I talk about an Indie Game like Undertale, Deltarune, Five nights at freddy's or FNAF in this video with In Stars and Time, an rpg indie game similiar to OMORI and earthbound and Undertale with time loops and is one of the best indie games
Indie games are beloved for a reason - they're unique, creative, and provide an emotional experience that you don't find in other games. In this video, we'll explore why indie game
Love that everyone I've seen play this game (including myself) agree that Siffrin wished to wear clothes Isabeau has made out of the four options.
its just the right answer hahah
i picked travel with mira actually 🤓
@@Criscuitt I also picked travel with Mira! After her very anxious introduction I wanted her to know she had people who really enjoyed being with her, not just along for the quick journey. Turned out I worried that about the wrong character LOL
@@sepiar7682 the irony is hilarious actually lmao
For my first play through it I chose Bonnie bc I felt bad for them and wanted to see them reunited
Time loops and time freezes are truly horrifying concepts, even just on the level of physics. When you learn new things, your brain physically forms new neural pathways in order to retain that information. And, if your brain maintains these changes upon looping, that means your brain still physically ages the entire time you are trapped. No wonder Siffrin was starting to forget basic names and vocabulary towards the end of it, his brain would have been fried both figuratively AND literally.

In Raging Loop, one of the routes has the main character slowly lose his humanity as he faces each loop as inevitable and without consequences. It's incredibly good
i might check it out!
that game is so crazy
He’s boutta get the Ozzy II experience
This game/Vn is the only thing so far that manage to literary drive me partially insane by managing to make me play and stay up for 2 days straight (Did take breaks here and there but didn't sleep til the 3rd day playing this game). When my Sleep deprived body touch my bed it feel like my bed was about 5 times bigger than it actually was. Though there was some good moment like the MC and my Sleep deprived Mental state were the same.
I really liked that game, it was a banger👍
I think time-loops are underrated.Knowing that you die only to feel numbness and discomfort is a concept in many shows. But know that you die,and came back or go back in time against your will …..is something that is horrible.Know that everything is moving forward when you’re the one holding back.
Question: is majora's mask technically a time loop?
When I saw this video I stopped it at 30 seconds in, got the game, played it, mentally scarred myself, and got a new game to add to my top 10 or even top 5. This is why I love rpgs especially indie ones, and want to make my own! Thank you for bringing me to this game and the tears! (in the game and irl)
so great to hear that! and good luck on making your own game!
me too, its my new favourite after the friend quest part
Watching this video after beating the game makes me realize how wonderful it is at foreshadowing. I love small details like that.
me too!!
14:43 Okay that sudden cut when the Croissant appeared before immediately changing to a different thing was a cool touch.
"I hope this game... just like blows up." -from the JelloApocalypse RUclips channel
Gotta love that Isabeau being trans is such a "OHHHHH" realization because beau is just the male equivalent of belle in french. Gotta have balls of steel to change the gender of your deadname itself to fit you
Actually a cute detail that you find in the first floor classroom is that in vaugard is common to have many names, normally at least three, a feminine one, a masculine one and a genderless one for good messure(some parents go overboard and the kid end up with like 10 names lol), so if someone decides to change they already have a name to pick up, isabeau was probably the masculine name of the bunch
@GuerillaSlope there's a room in the House where you find a time-frozen trans student in the middle of using magic to Craft a new body. We learn that it's a pretty common practice and not too difficult to achieve
@@sirkittens5445 And hot damn are they happy as hell when they finish at the epilogue.
YAH !!! someone talk about it ! my buddy worked on the graphism she is insane hun !
Thats so cool!!
Imagine the gut punch if the big emotional ending just ended up being a rug pull and the character just looped back to the start again.
I know you didn’t mention this but the fight against loop was probably one of my favourite moments in gaming learning the truth about them was just so emotional
11:32 I like the "dont look at the end of the video" bit just like in the jello stream (side note: everytime I see the ending I still remeber the thrill and feeling I felt when I beat it... and still want to scream... in a good way)

I immediately went and saved this game to my Steam wishlist. Afraid to say, I won't be watching this video until I play the game because the trailer was unfairly epic and I love these sorts of existential experiences, but I'll eventually find my way to this in my watch later playlist after I finish playing! Thanks for introducing me to what I already know is gonna be a masterpiece!
I've been playing thanks to a friend and am happy to see that it's gaining more of a fan base now
Friend of mine suggested this game to my partner, saying “its smth you’d rlly like”, so my partner starts playing it on call and I slowly get like. Violently Absorbed watching it. I hadnt even watched the first chapter but i understood eberything enough. And by the ending we were both sobbing our eyes out. I wasnt even playing. I was just there. And we were sobbing and it was like. Ugly sobbing…ive only ugly sobbed over a few games (ive cried over many a game but it was silent crying, not like. Full on Ugly Sobbing). Im glad this game is one of those bc damn it. It was so much emotionally and i Love it.
i very much agree, this game is one of the most emotional games i have ever played
A few things that are probably important to mention: Siffrin has always been really jumpy when other people touch him, the rest of the party recognized this and made a conscious effort not to touch, which is why Isabeau doesn’t touch their shoulder in the final end scene until Siff grabs his hand. The way you phrased it could be interpreted as “Beau doesn’t touch Siff because of the whole wishing making everyone loop in time” thing.
The loops did not make Siff forget the names of normal objects (the anvil, forage, and sharpening stone, the kiln, the pottery wheel, and the stuffed animal) their memory is very bad, likely due to the whole country erased from everyone’s memory thing. At one point if you examine a few objects that Siff can’t remember the names of, Bonnie will exclaim that “Siffrin is forgetting the names of everyday objects again!” Which means this is not a new thing, the list that Mirabelle gives you on your first loop is also evidence of this.
Also another cool thing, once you get the final ending, you can see everyone unfrozen if you leave out of the room and can even go back to the main town and talk to everyone.
Completely agree!
the touching thing, i wanted to talk about it more, and i actually did in the first draft of this video's script, but i ended up kind of scrapping it cause i couldnt really fit it in well enough, the memory kind of the same, but i didnt think it was fully relevant to this video/the story of the game, except for when trying to show Siffrins slipping mental health.
truth is, i could probably make 2 more full videos about this game and still have things to say, this game is so very deep and i indeed did miss ALOT of things :D
I love how this game isn't horror but some scenes like Bonnie's head just suddenly getting bloodied out or the changing screwey rooms genuinely got me a little scared..... Especially the Bonnie one, i got jumpscared by it at least once!
AAAAAAA!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE VIDEOS ABOUT THIS GAME ITS TAKEN OVER MY EVERY THOUGHT FOR LIKE HALF A YEAR!!!! The portrayal of such raw emotion in every single one of the characters feels so real and heartfelt and just SO INTERESTING!!! I hope you keep talking about this game I’ll be sure to watch whatever you come up with next!
YEAHHH I AGREEE the emotion is so incredible in this game and theres also like a ton of cool storytelling things i can talk about this game is so cool
Honestly, this game and many others shows that great power brings forth character development if not used wisely.
this video only having 200 views is such a crime this is so good
There’s a few more views now
15:42 isabeau's name is a masc version of isabelle since beau means handsome in french and belle means beautiful (or at least the masc and fem equivalents)
oh thats such a cool detail :D
Literally the very fist sentence of this video is just said, and I'm already screaming "I KNOW, RIGHT, ME TOO, AAAAA". You dog, the video didn't even begin to start, and I'm already feeling like I'm unlocking a brand new hormone I didn't have before. How in the world did you even do that? You made my day.
hahaha thats awesome :DD
0:15 well someone hasn't watched Re:Zero...it is literally full of mental consequences of time looping over and over again
Oh god, just after I got obsessed with it. Perfect timing.
I watched the first minute of this video and, for some reason, had a really good feeling about the game despite knowing nothing. I bought it, played it for nine hours straight for two days in a row, and absolutely loved it. One of the best games I've played in a while!! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video and decided to just Go For It
This video essay was the single thing that got me into In Stars and Time, thanks for the new hyperfixation
We really need more games like this about regression depression, it’s not explored enough in the timeloop and regressor genre’s
I played this game a couple months ago, at the start of 2024, and it was genuinely one of the most heartbreaking and gutwrenching experiences I've ever had in gaming (in a good way!!).
I've always had a soft spot for indie games like these, with my all-time favorite being OneShot, but ISaT was the first game to challenge that title. I'm so glad I got to play this game blind before it gained that popularity, it's definitely a *spectacular* game that's on par with behemots like Undertale to me, and I genuinely don't understand how some people say it's not as good as others say and that it's overestimated. It's seriously one of the top 3 best games I've ever played and needs so much more attention, so I'm glad to see more people cover it!!
I've always wanted someone to make a video essay showing the entire game, so thank you so much for making this video, this is literally all I've ever wanted lmao
I absolutely agree. I played earlier this summer, and it's challenged a different indie title (Wandersong) for my favorite video game.
I think this game hit me at my core more so than Wandersong did, mainly because of the themes of memories, being forgotten, and doing what you can to remember.
Very happy to see more about this game!
Thank you for making this video!! It came into my recommended videos and I was really interested by the game's cover so I went ahead and got the game to play it before watching this! Thanks to you, I had one of the best experiences with one of the greatest games I've ever played. I am in LOVE with this game! Thank you! Now that I've finished it, I can actually watch this!
Glad you enjoyed the game :DD
The art reminds me a lot of “dwellers empty path”

The what?
@@playerleo9211There's a whole other act(?) where you go talk to Loop and things happen, I'm not spoiling it but you should go check it outt
THE WHAT
@@playerleo9211 @Rookie-bs2qu
1. If you fiddle with the coin in your inventory enough in Act 4, you'll get a special cutscene
2. You can show souvenirs to Loop by interacting with the souvenir near them
3. In Act 6, you can go back to Dormont.
I think that both you and this game are underrated.
+1 for the algorithm
Seems like my job here is done.
This video is bo longer what I'd call underrated
What is incredibly interesting is that there are moments where Siffrin has memories push through, like them running away from home on a boat, but each time the universe glitches and Siffrin forgets, in the same way it does if you had collected an item in a previous loop and tried to again
The true horror of trying to live in the past, the way the human mind protects itself by forgetting the bad parts, and the only way out is to accept the unknown tomorrow. Dam this game is a good game.
I had a HUGE hyperfixation on it as soon as I found it! It’s an incredible game and I’m glad people are giving it the credit it deserves :D Isat will always have a place in my heart, the story hits me on a personal level in ways that I never would have expected, thank you for covering this game! ❤❤❤
I misread siffrin as suffrin at first. Guess it still counts.
lmao
Thank you so much, after watching most of this video I downloaded the game on my nintendo switch and completed the game 10 days later (yesterday) and I have a massive hyperfixation on it, without this video I do NOT know what i would be doing right now, so seriously, i know it doesnt sound that big but for me this is massive, thank you so much, interests like these really bring meaning and happiness to my life and it really has lifted my mood massively over the past week and a half, so seriously thank you so much for posting this video
looks like this game is finally getting its well-deserved fame
This video is so good!!! A great introduction for me to your channel! Hope you had more subscribers!!!
and now, one minute into the video, I'm gonna go play the game, see ya'll when i get back
If you started playing the game, have you liked it at the moment?

I finished this game yesterday and it’s actually an underrated masterpiece. Everything after ACT 1 was perfectly written.

HEYYYYY its cool to see this game get more attention!
ive loved it ever since i played it and its AMAZING to see people making videos about it!
Something really funny is that the main party’s 5 character archetypes are literally just every friend group I’ve ever had
this game is way too underrated, i hope it can become more popular soon
About a week ago I began watching this video for the first time, but around two minutes in I thought it looked cool, and I wanted to play it for myself.
I've never been so glad I played a game without spoiling myself. In Stars and Time is now my favourite game I've EVER played. Coming back right after finishing the game now, and it made me sob for 2 hours straight. I'm so glad I came across this video and learned this game even existed, I'm so happy I got to experience this for myself:)
glad you got to play it blindly :DD
My maniacal insane self thought siffrin would go murdering on atleast ONE of the loops tbh
Ah yes the disassosiation button
i love that button
Disassociation sure is nice
Oh my god at 3:39 there was an ad as soon as you finished reading siffrin's dialogue...
But i LOVE this game and its one of my favorites ♡ so glad its getting attention!
As a time loop enthusiast(yes project moon has me in a choke hold) I will be saving this video for when I beat this game. Thank you for putting me on🙏🏾🙏🏾
This makes me think about Rain World.
But more specifically the ones who failed to escape the forever repeating cycle.
Because in Rain World, there is a way to escape the loop.
Can't say much more because I don't want to give spoilers 😉
haven't watched the video, but
Thank you for making a video about ISAT, this is definitely a really underrated game
I love ISAT. it may be my favorite game of all time, it's so good.
I may be a couple of weeks late but still, hurray to ISAT & Shilsey for making this video !

Ahhh, In Stars And Time, the most devastatingly powerful timeloop game that I'll *NEVER* replay ever again. It kind of broke me for a few days. I legit needed to read a fanfic that sort of acts like an epilogue to the story to actually finish processing it. XD
Man, though... That bit at 12:40 ish is where even a pretty stoic "It's fine, I'm fine, my loved ones matter more than me" guy like me would have broken down in that situation and outright begged my pals to help. Low key traumatizing.
this video is so well made, thank you! :) i dont know if you know about this, but at the end before talking to the head housemaiden, you can go back to vaugarde by going down and talk to the townspeople and a certain somebody, its such a cool scene and reveals a very interesting addition to this already amazing story
i did know about that haha, i originally had something about it in the script but couldnt quite manage to fit it in, but yeah its awesome :)!
9:04 Oh mah Change gawd keyblade moment!!!
the time fuckery, the mental stuff, the artstyle, the topdown rpg maker vibe, and the deltarune party system
this is 100% gonna be the next thing just like omori, undertale, or fpe i guarantee it
I’m pretty sure it was made in RPG Maker lol
i litteraly cried at the first loop. this is the first time ive EVER cried at my screen
I like the siffrin depression and being sad over pixels

Ok.
I don't want to get spoiled like it happened with OneShot.
I want to do it like i did with Omori, I'll avoid ANY content related to this game until I play it.

Great video really entertaining pulled me in immediately and kept me here the way you explain things quickly and efficiently
Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember reading a story where basically isekais are a real thing, someone gets summoned to another world defeats the demon king and returns to earth with supernatural powers. The story starts with a bunch of these isekai returnees completely destroying the world because of personal issues. And this story is really well written so if you don't want spoilers stop reading.
One of these returnees obtained the ability to revert back time before he died. However he discovers that he cannot die at all, and that even old age loops him back before his death. Despite many attempts at immortality he concludes that the only way to die and free humanity of his loop is to create a demon king that will kill him.
A demon king can only be made by having someone kill enough people and accumulate enough bad karma to become a demon king. However there's this one returnee thats so busted powerful that a demon king is always just out of reach despite looping. So he resorts to making that one super powerful guys life a living hell. Preventing any chance of redemption, and escalating the mass death as much as possible. Eventually he finally turns this godly strong returnee into an even more powerful demon king. He trains the strongest available other returnee to beat the demon king. Finally he confronts the demon king and cuts of an arm before finally dying at an unknown amount of 100s of 1000s years old in loop time.
Stories a manhwa called "Hero has returned" or "warrior has returned" depending on translation
Fun fact about language in ISAT:
Crab is a swear word in Vaugardian, and 'Change' is used as God.
Blinding is a swear word substitute in [REDACTED]'s language, and Stars is used as God (because they believe in a Universe).
We don't know of a Ka Buan swear word because Odile only swears once at the end of the game due to fear of heights, and say 'crab', which Bonnie comments on.
Odile says Gems/Gems alive im p sure!
@@Shilsey Oh yeah, they even turn their people into gems when they die. Thanks!
Stop this game made me cry so much especially Act 5 🙁 I took my time with the game because I loved it so much, trying to 100% right now but some achievements are just so hard to get and see, and also the little self deprecating episodes Siffrin has are so sad to read.
Wow, Such a high quality video. Keep it up😊
Thank you so much 😁
Wooooo more attention to ISAT

There's a Korean Novel called Regressor's Tales of Cultivation. Although I haven't finished this video yet, I think people will find a common thread between this game and the novel. The novel has been translated up to 400 chapters online for free. You'll see a lot of the mc suffering and breaking down at certain points. Although he always maintains his sanity at least outwardly. Sometimes a lot later in the story, it will show him hearing advice from somebody who isn't there. There are plenty examples of the mc breaking down in depression after certain events in a loop. However, he will pick himself back up and continue trying to achieve his goals with full sincerity in each life. There is a lot of the mc trying to understand the world he is in and who he is as well. I highly Recommend it to those who could've been interested in this video just based off the title.

This is an absolute amazing way of retelling the story of the game but i fear there are some questions you left unanswered (I am only saying this because I don't see another video on your channel talking about it). This is of course Loop. Loop's true identity is hinted at throughout the game but you don't actually find out until the finale in act 6. If you are curious Im sure there are videos on it, Its called the two hats ending.
I knew about this at the time of making the video, but i couldn't quite fit it in the script sadly, im afraid it was a skill issue on my part
It’s interesting, but my favorite time loop within a game has to be how lobotomy corp and its sequel handles the many time loops of over 100000 loops that Angela one of the main characters suffered from.
cool thing that they could've done is make it so that like after years, one of them dies in some way and you return to the start
