How to make Spanakopita - Greek Spinach & Feta Pie

  • Greeks love pies! If you have visited Greece, I am sure you have tried this classic!
    Spanakopita - Spinach and Feta pie….in Greece we serve it as a snack, starter or you can even serve it as a main course with a Greek salad.
    Its easy to make and absolutely delicious!
    I am sure it will bring back a lot of memories!
    Ingredients
    600g fresh spinach
    400g feta cheese
    1 large onion
    1 bunch of spring onion
    Small bunch dill
    Small bunch parsley
    1 egg
    1 tablespoon long grain rice
    Salt and pepper
    Olive oil
    1 pack of Filo pastry
    2 tablespoons water

    I live a semi-monastic (Orthodox Christian) life in a rural area. I Grow my own food and cook it. No meat. Observe the fasts.. I just found and subscribed to your channel. I could eat spanokopita everyday. Yours looks delicious. Ill be trying your others reciped as well. Thank you for the instruction.

    I am going to make this with swiss chard from my garden instead of spinach. I know that is not the standard, but I need to do something with all this chard!

    Thank you for this recipe and telling us why you need to add oil between every sheet. No one else told me why!!! I love the rice and the water trick on top! I am going to make this tomorrow evening! We just came back from Santorini and I was only able to try this at the airport, sadly. AND for breakfast!!!! It was the best Spanakopita I have ever eaten!!!

    My yiayiathes (in-law) use mint rather than parsley. I add chopped green chilli. It’s such a wonderful dish because you can throw in herbs you love

    The water on the top , I am told is to keep the philo down and crispy.

    Is spanakopita usually eaten warm, room temperature, or refrigerator cold? Also, asuming there is any left, what us the best way to store it?

      Spanakopita is usually eaten at room temperature, although and depending on individual tastes, some people like it warm. I would keep it in the fridge in an airtight container. Thank you

      Thank you! I bought the phyllo pastry from a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean shop and I am afraid I cannot remember the brand. Any brand will do however :-)

      Look for any brand that look like it comes in sheets. We use Athens, it’s the only one I can find locally.

    i want to ask about rice. you have to put it ready or half ready or raw? will it be ready there?

    @SofiasGrekaKitchen is it a must to cook the onions? Can I just add it to the spinach mixture without cooking it?

      I think it will be fine if you finely chop the onions. The reason we cook them is to soften them but if you finely chop the onion it should be fine too. Good luck
