So, I just went to check out some further demos of the Hiwatt... aaand of course everyone’s splattering out the metal tones with high output humbuckers.... Have I told you lately how much I appreciate you? Thanx for not just great lessons of great songs, but also my favourite kinds of tones. 👍
Great video Eric as always bro! So glad the Squire has come back strong. I feel the CV series is one of the best out there. Love my 2017 60’s CV Strat and recently upgraded the electronics as well as put a set of Fender 69’ Custom PIckups In her, now she just sings. Thx for all your hard work bro, we appreciate you!

Great ramble. Loved it! And, as always, great musicianship. Was in True Tone Music in Santa Monica last summer and this guy was having his way with an older Japanese Strat and after I complimented his playing he said that Fender really nails the sweet spot for quality vs cost with their Japanese made guitars. So I bought a Japanese Tele w/ Bigsby (entirely inspired by yours) and I'd have to agree. I connect more with that Tele than my custom shop Tele, which I sold as a result. Thanks for another great video.
Yeah! The Japan Fenders are so tight! It's totally just like Toyota vs. Cadillac - sure one is pretty and has leather seats, but the other is more practical and reliable!
I've pretty much got the same guitar, Black Translucent finish but mine has an rosewood fretboard. I bought it used in 1986. It also has the 3 screw plate with neck adjustment screw. SQ series. I've changed out the pickups and the bridge seats and installed a roller nut
Hey Eric, I also have a 1982 squire Strat. I love it. I bought it new . It’s the same color only difference is that I put a set of Joe Barron PU’s . Sounds the same.
That's a neat strat, thanks for sharing. My first guitar was a Squier Bullet in '89. It was later dismantled and the neck was joined to a jaguar shaped body that I made, my first homemade guitar ~'93. Sadly all that stuff is dust in the wind. I love the MIJ Fender stuff and it's still sort of affordable but going up.
Yeah. Can’t speak for the Boston scene but an hour north we had mixed feelings about their closing up. Luckily, Joe and Music Mill stepped in, made the right moves, and is now an absolute treasure in the community. Worth the trip from Boston? Eh, it’s not a huge place so I can’t say it’s worth a trip of its own exactly. But if you’re anywhere near by and haven’t been, DEFINITELY pop in.
TerriblePeril Music Mill is probably the best customer service experience I’ve had in any sort of used store. They’re really fair with their deals and if you have stuff to trade in, they give you a ton of wiggle room. My time I’m in there, Craig takes good care of me
Rogue One great group of people they’ve got in there. I remember when it was just Joe and he had the two rooms across the hall from each other in (one of) the older locations by the river. Huge humps in the creaky floors, reminded me of Belisle’s (god I miss them!). Can’t say enough good things about the business or the people there. In fact I need some strings so I’d better start waking up haha
I second your love of Weber Alnicos. I have one in a 63 Tuxedo Princeton and another in a silveface Champ and they sound fantastic. The before and after was unbelievable. As a proud Hoosier, I think Weber might be Kokomo, Indiana's finest export. : )
A friend just *gave* me a MIJ Squier from the 80s. Holy cow it rips even with the slightly dodgy stock pickups. It can take a beating, that's for sure.
An "Eric ramble" is still a good start to a Friday morning. And I'm off the hook for having to learn a new cool arrangement this week. Although teaching that Steely Dan arrangement would be "dope."
Ha! Exactly - it's nice to slow the relentless "learn this" onslaught and just talk gear! That Rikki arrangement has been in my back pocket for years - I gotta finish it!
I love Boston! I used to work at the Economy Hardware in Brookline -Paint Dept supervisor. I remember there was a great Irish Pub right next door me and the other employees would hang out after work. Memories!
I bought my 1993 Les Paul classic plus From daddies along with countless other gear a nice Takamine Japanese 12 string. It was a cool store and a different time.
Liked getting that side shot of your guitar's action at 11:50. Nice to see a nice realistic spacing there unlike so many people who's guitar strings seem to be sitting almost on the frets.
Eric Haugen Man, there are few people in the world who are in a position to add positive vibes to others lives; i appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Keep up the good work - I aspire to play like you one day 👊🏽
One my favorite comedians, Myq Kaplan, talks about this on his latest record (it's great). Putting goodness out there is the best thing we can do for each other - after all, we're all in this together!
i had a chinese squier that was just a standard Squier strat. It was one of the best guitars I owned, although I did upgrade electronics immediately. It wasnt one of the Japanese or mexican ones, just happened to be a great guitar. It was also dark green, which is unusual and stunning on a strat.
One of my first good guitars was an 83 squier mij black strat with rw neck.. Got it in high school when i was 16.. Still have it today im 52.. Have 2 other sq serial mij strats and 2 jv serial mij strats.. Great guitars
great video, I just picked up a sweet squire deluxe Strat in a pearly white, maple neck and play through this type of rig. been thinking about the hi5 for my home amp, but was worried about the cleans, sounds great here.
My first band out of school, sans internet and all that info, I chose Gibson designs because they were easier to play and do vocals. So yeah, - Fenders ARE much more simultaneously reactive and sensitive, while also being bullet proof. All I can say there is that my The Paul had a glued on, tenon neck, - or it would have had a broken one, - on several occasions. What's also superior about the Fenders that I play now are those single coils; push some real aggression into humbuckers, and you've got mud.Even the vintage output PAF's are no fun in comparison.(SG's and Firebirds are still cool, - but with P90's...) Also part of my early ,wrongfully encouraged , career was a Hiwatt 100 head, - before most clubs had PA's ,and soundmen, and backlines. Besides being deafeningly loud, it also had endless headroom, which was nearly impossible to distort; good thing for stacked Rat's, MicroAmps, and Morley FuzzWahs. You shouldn't be worrying about copy right strikes; if you have original material from those old projects, that's the only cover I want to hear.Always keep proving that you're listening with your ears, instead of some BS, misplaced loyalty, - or shilling for paid endorsements.Always good stuff.
I would love it if you could do a video of how you maintain such an impeccable band of plants! For those of us still trying to put the perfect band together, which plants to get, what music to play for them etc.
I just get the ones that are low maintenance medium light :-) Rubber plant ( I named him "Robert Plant"), Kroton, Snake Plant, and Philodendron - all very easy to care for!
Eric, I also have an '83 Squier Japan Strat, and an 84 SQ Tele...KILLER guitars. My JV 83 Fender Strat is even better, so saying the Japan made stuff of this era is so well made to me. Really cool to see another SQ enthusiast. These are getting more and more hard to come by, and expensive. Great video spotlighting one of my favorite eras of Fender and Fender Japan. Cheers.
Yeah! The Fender Japan stuff is just aces! The pickups sometimes need to be upgraded - that's the one think I think the Japan Fenders don't have quite right.
i came here for the hiwatt. .but you made such a great point....i love gibsons ..or at least when my heros play them....but my tele makes me sound better...for whatever reason... alot of them you mentioned..... i really love that hiwatt tho...i want one and ive noticed webber in smaller amps....they seem to growl in a good way.....cool vid....cheers
Yeah! It's all about what we're used to! I mostly played Fenders growing up & gigging, so that's what feels right to me. I've got friends who got Les Pauls early on, and now that's what makes sense to them!
Anytime someone mentions Big Star, an Alex Chilton gets its wings. I almost met him once. Saw him out the back of the gig venue in the afternoon smoking..um..a "cigarette" (of some variety). I left him in peace and went to the show that night. He was amazing. And he did a comedy routine based around "What's in Alex's bag?" He had rolling papers and pulled them out and gave the crowd a massive wink. Charming dude. Sadly missed. As the song goes: "I never travel far without a little Big Star".
Single coils are definitely more dynamic in my opinion. P90s as well. Thanks again for making clear what can be hard to get across. Like those frets as well. My Squier CV '60s Stratocaster is a favorite with a blend control system. Great guitar. The E-lady flanger is a cool time. Thanks again.
I play a 83 Japanese Vintage Telecaster as my main guitar. It is the best Tele I have tried yet and I got it pretty cheap. Killer twang tone on the bridge pickup. Only problem is that it is pretty prone to noise interference from the stage lights and such but who cares once the music is playing?
There are clubs around here like that too! The biggest room in town has such bad hum, I always have to rethink my whole tone setup when I have a gig there!
Btw, have you noticed how underrated the middle coil setting on a Strat is. Somewhat overlooked, I feel. Jerry Garcia was a big of the middle pick-up sound, and Layla/Dominoes era Clapton too. Great video as always, Eric.
Middle pickup is the most underrated pickup setting on a Strat, I love it! People complain it's either not bright enough compared to the bridge sound or doesn't have the woof of the neck pickup, but for me it fixes most problems I have with both those pickups. You can also try out the Blender pot CTS makes which allows you to use 2 extra pickup combinations; bridge and neck like a Tele and all three at once. I much prefer both those options than either position 2 or 4 on a regular Strat.
Yup, I have a Fralin blender pot on my CIJ '68 Strat. It's amazing if you use it regularly. But if I don't pick up that guitar for a while I spend the first 1/2 hour relearning how it works 🙄
SNAP! Is it weird that I click on this from the safety of my couch cradling my '83 SQ squier strat, my 'black' strat (not black anymore). I got mine new in '84 as back up to my partsocaster. Mine is not in anything like pristine condition, but it's still going strong. I went with '68 clones made here in Australia by Mick Brierley for the pickups after trying..... everything... and finally the sound I knew was there came out. They are great guitars. Double SNAP on the J Mascis too. That neck!
I got bit by the Fender Japan bug last year. Snagged a 62 RI Strat made at Fuji Gen in 91. It’s wasn’t a catalog item, so not sure how many of them were made. It was meant for Japan domestic market only. It’s the first guitar I grab now 😍BTW-someone brought you up a couple times on That Pedal Show super chats on their live show they do on Mondays. Encouraging Mick & Dan to check your channel out. Wasn’t me but fully supported the suggestion! Nice Pulp reference too 🤘
oooooooooh send pics! I'm having a real love affair with strats lately - the 5 positions are all actually useful! And the trems work as well as a bigsby once you get them set right!
So the dynamic thing about single coil pickups is exactly why I love Fenders (or single coils, in general) as well. Some things can only be done with humbuckers, but I'm not usually looking to do those things. Even with humbuckers, I'm into the lowest-gain ones I can get. I do have a Gretsch with TV Jones Classic Plus Filtertrons in it, and I do like the character of those, but the typical modern higher-gain humbuckers are not for me.
13:19 Ahh the MiniMass is what you were telling me about over Instagram. I just now saw this video for the first time. That will quiet down the LC amp we were talking about. Hold off back our ear/head suffering.
Hiwatt is fantastic, had one for 3 years until i discovered Dr.Z which is pretty close just slightly more wild and uncontrolled and packs a bass punch instead of a hum.
We got some very similar amp tastes! I have the Twin Twelves and the Hiwatt T40/20 MK III. They’re very hard to find due to low production and terrible, absolutely terrible marketing on Hiwatt’s end. They’ve been out for years and nobody seems to know about them. Fantastic sounding and looking heads.
Great minds think alike! Yeah, it's funny more people don't know about these import Hiwatts - but it's kind of cool to be "in-the-know." Now we can be hipsters and say "I knew about them before everybody else" :-)
I really like @nowyoushred jam tracks - he does a great job. Also, you probably know this but all my backing tracks are available for free on my website - just go the the listing of any lesson and you can grab 'em!
Had exactly the same guitar, which I bought in about 1984/85; sold it to a fellow band member a couple of years later when I was a little short of cash......possibly top of my "Why the f*!* did I sell that?" list.
Your tone is always spot on. Cheers! (It wouldn’t break my heart if you went on a diminished chord rant- playing them, that is ... we all know how awesome that sounds...)
Oh yeah I can't tell you how many hours I've spent on Warmoth's site building custom dream guitars! Years ago I made a Warmoth Jazzmaster with Fralin p90s - I wish I still had it!

Yeah it looks like both the US and Australia are struggling to get the virus under control! I know quite a few people who've gotten in, and they say it's a really nasty flu. Crazy days, indeed - perfect times to stay inside with our guitars!
I own quite a few guitars and yet out of the bunch, the two I play most are a cheap Squier (I think Affinity!) Strat and a veeeery lovely Vintage Modified Jaguar. Would like to try a Mustang as I think the short scale neck seems to suit my hands. That being said - I also love the Teles I have as well. Guess _I'm_ a Fender guy too! 😁🎸
Funny how "vintage" squires are a thing now. Got a 98 S Korean squire. Love the neck. Not quite a full 1 11/16 but that super skinny 40mm nut on modern Squires. One of my best playing guitars.
Nice video Eric! Thanks for sharing. ...It is cool baby it is coool; we still just talking...now I want you go in that bag and find my Strat...which on is it? It is the one that says BAD Motherf....... :))) Enjoyed your talk as always!
LOVE your Strat!! I happen to have the very exact same guitar myself - 1983 Squier Strat, MIJ, all black w/ maple neck, 70's style headstock & logo. I got mine brand new in January of 1984 (made in Dec. 1983) and have had it all these years. Those MIJ Squiers are really well made guitars. I too took off the original pickguard/pickup assembly and have it packed away. I'm currently running a set of DiMarzio Area '58/'58/'61 pickups in it with a Toneshaper control module for custom switching options. Curious, I'd love to know if ours happened to be made around the same time? Mine has a JV serial number on the neck plate.
Thanks man! I getting more and more into the idea of "alternate content" - more tone talks, philosophy, who knows! I'll still mostly bring the lessons, but it's fun to stretch out and mess around a bit!
Once I googled "can I curse on RUclips" the mental gloves came off! Yes, there's a lot of Bob Ross in my personality, but there's a good bit of Larry David too! I think a well placed expletive can really serve to highlight a concept.
What a gift music is for all of us staying inside to try and slow this pandemic down! I genuinely feel bad for all the true extroverts - those people who really need to hang out with other people to survive! oooof this is a tough year for them!
Really nice guitar indeed ! I'm looking for a nice first strat and i would like to incorporate a lot of whammy bar in my playing... I've heard its often their weakness 🤔 Great gear video !
If set up properly, you can totally get it to work great! I only use 3 springs in the back, so there's less tension. And I've noticed my tech made the outer 2 screws tighter than the middle 4 - I think that does something to make it float easier. You can't dive bomb all day, but it works great for little dips and shimmers!
Dude. I love strats. USA, Japan, Indo, Korea, china and MIM....Why? Humans made them using mostly same materials. I've played them all. They all work well. Even the cheap ones. But man, that Hiwatt. Gimme please!! I'm a gilmour fan. Hahah
I love the fact that you prove that it's not the wand, it's the magician. I love that backing track by the way. I'm now trying to decide on a new (or old) Fender Telecaster. Do you have any favorites Eric? Kevin O'Rourke
Thanks Kev! That opening jam is actually an instrumental version of my psyche/new wave project - "Fake Swedish," track is 'Pedigree': open.spotify.com/track/6oVLKE8fTXaiZS5rPb2o5J?si=doiBxeiVTY69aHyKebcuvQ As for teles, or any guitars - the best way to shop is in person. But here we are in corona-verse so that's not an option. Avoid the USA Fenders - pointlessly expensive and feel weird The Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian made Fenders are all potentially very good guitars! I love the Classic 50s, & 60s series, which now I think is "Vintera." Plus yeah the Squier Classic Vibes are so great and so cheap! Or hunt down a made in Japan on Reverb & Ebay
I've got a Joe Bonamassa signature Epiphone Firebird and though I rarely play it (out of fear of damage - it's one of the rare tobacco sunburst ones!), it's practically made of granite!! 😉
Ha yeah! Sometimes you can tell I'm too excited to focus :-) I use 10s on all my electrics except my dano - that's got 11s because it's set up for slide.
I have looked at the attenuators before, but get overwhelmed on how to hook them up. I have a Fender Princeton 12" speaker tweed version, and sometimes would like to play it not so loud. How does the weber attenuator hook up? Nice Squire by the way. I haven't been able to bond with my Strat yet - it's a 2008 American Std I bought a few years ago. Just can't figure it out - but love it when I hear someone play a strat who has them figured out. I play my tele and a 2004 Epiphone Sheraton more than anything else.
The newer USA Fender necks are kinda weird - like a wide, U-shaped thing. I can never quite hang with it either! Weber's got really great customer service and they'll always reply to email questions! What you'll need is 2 speaker cables and a 1/4 to 1/4 adapter: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GPP105--hosa-gpp-105-1-4-inch-trs-coupler You'd disconnect the little flat plug from the back of your princeton, hook up the speaker cable there, & run it into the mini mass. From the output of the minimass, you'd run another speaker cable, connect the adapter and then plug the flat plug back in to the other side of the adapter. That way the signal goes: amp -> speaker cable -> minimass -> adapter -> original plug -> speaker *NEVER PLAY YOUR AMP WITHOUT THE SIGNAL GOING SOMEWHERE* you can cook the transformer that way
Those are great amps too, but i don't think it'll beat the real tubey goodness of the princeton. Also, you could consider putting a strymon deco in front of your princeton - as you know, that works very well as a tonefull amp overdriver!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yes, I have thought about that as a possibility too. My overdrive pedal is very basic - an SD-1 - sometimes I really like it, but other times it is muddy and sounds very processed - a different OD pedal may be the best answer. I don't think I really want another amp.
I own a 1983 fender squire it was my first electric I still have it same as yours just with a rosewood fret board I am so glad I kept it the Japan made ones from 83 like ours are simply amazing I kept my stock pickups these guitars are worth a few bucks and sound and play as good as any American strat very cool! What reverb are u using does that hi-5 have it or are you using a pedal thanks man your tone is killer! I recently got a T20-“/10 hiwatt combo it’s way to loud amazing tone so I’m looking at your attenuator I think that’s the best solution to tame the beast! Thanks for this video
I'm using the Catalinbread Topanga, and a touch of room reverb added in post! Layers! I stand by my Weber mini mass as one of the most useful $150 tools I've ever owned. Tube amp fixer!
Good video. I enjoy the Squier love. I have a closet fuul of CV and VM Squiers. All good players. I Love that guitar man. I seem to be addicted to Fender single coil guitars. I have no clue why, just the way it is. Just curious, what string trees are those? I haven't seen them before.
My tech put those on - I think their gotoh roller trees. Yeah - single coil Fenders can really take the abuse. I would never hammer away on an SG or LP the way I feel so comfortable to do on my Strat, Tele, or Mustang!
Very cool Eric! I also have a 83 Squire strat w/ rosewood neck & an 83 Squire Bullet w/ maple Tele neck! I got them at pawn shop's in Ohio 25 years ago. Both are Bad to the Bone! Killer! I'll send you a photo of them. Thanks for info on Weber mini mass & Hiwatt. How many watts & what tubes? Thanks for sharing. Peace.
That Hi-Watt is making me so jelly. I grew up on SGs and 335s. Hated Strats. Now I love them but the 25.5 scale is not kind to my Angus Young-type, tiny man-hands. I don't actually know if he has tiny hands but he's a short dude so I am assuming. Also he loves SGs and so do I. I still hate Teles.
Yeah I think it's a matter of what we grew up playing. Strats, Teles, and Mustang for me - so my playing adapted to the construction of those guitars. Very interesting how that works!

As someone in New England the shout out to daddy’s really took me back. That place was like Disney world to me when I was young.
Yeah! Cambridge music too! Having those music schools in the Back Bay means lots of gear turnover!
@@Terrible_Peril I'm in southern Maine, where is music mill?
I had the exact same guitar and I lost my job and sold it and my 1980 Schecter metallic blue flame maple necked strat!!
Miss both so bad.
I second your love of Weber Alnicos. I have one in a 63 Tuxedo Princeton and another in a silveface Champ and they sound fantastic. The before and after was unbelievable. As a proud Hoosier, I think Weber might be Kokomo, Indiana's finest export. : )
Yeah! They really have a voice! They change any amp they're in for the better!
Want. Must have. Cannot afford. Dilemma.
@@mattgilbert7347 Sadly, that's a song that's been on most of our set lists lately. : )
Awesome video Eric. Very loose and super stylistic & vibeeeeee.
Thanks Vernon!
As you can see, I was too excited to really plan anything out :-)
A friend just *gave* me a MIJ Squier from the 80s.
Great vid. I love my MIJ 86 Strat. Mine came w/ Lace Sensor Gold pickups.
Lace sensors are cool! They get a bad rep, because they don't sound "vintage" - but once people get over that, they've got their own thing!
Dude that intro jam was amazing!
Daddy's Junky Music...brings back memories.
Yeah those pre-internet days were such a free-for-all for gear!
I know it's not just the pickups, I'm sure the amp and plug-ins are part of it, but Holy crap I want that sound on my strat. It sounds soooo good
Reverb is the key!
Lots and lots of reverb :-)
Liked getting that side shot of your guitar's action at 11:50. Nice to see a nice realistic spacing there unlike so many people who's guitar strings seem to be sitting almost on the frets.
I keep my action pretty low, but yeah not shredder low :-)
Greetings all way from the U.K. Eric. I totally get it...expensive guitars and money can’t buy me love ! Stay safe...
Yeah! I like fancy guitars and luxury cars too!
But that's not really me - I'm dirtier and scrappier, more practical.
I love your skills, sounds and your humble attitude. Live long and prosper 🖖
Thanks so much Ray!
I really strive to be as real as possible, a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get kinda guy."
I hope you and yours are surviving 2020 ok!
Yeah! Exactly!
Sometimes a guitar is just somehow the "right" one - it's hard to pin down what it is.
One of my first good guitars was an 83 squier mij black strat with rw neck.. Got it in high school when i was 16.. Still have it today im 52.. Have 2 other sq serial mij strats and 2 jv serial mij strats.. Great guitars
Yeah! The Fender Japan stuff is so SOLID!
great video, I just picked up a sweet squire deluxe Strat in a pearly white, maple neck and play through this type of rig. been thinking about the hi5 for my home amp, but was worried about the cleans, sounds great here.
What's also superior about the Fenders that I play now are those single coils; push some real aggression into humbuckers, and you've got mud.Even the vintage output PAF's are no fun in comparison.(SG's and Firebirds are still cool, - but with P90's...)
Also part of my early ,wrongfully encouraged , career was a Hiwatt 100 head, - before most clubs had PA's ,and soundmen, and backlines.
Great episode. Love the excitement
Thanks Matthew!
As you can see, I'm super-pumped to have that baaaad mofo back!
I would love it if you could do a video of how you maintain such an impeccable band of plants! For those of us still trying to put the perfect band together, which plants to get, what music to play for them etc.
I just get the ones that are low maintenance medium light :-)
Rubber plant ( I named him "Robert Plant"), Kroton, Snake Plant, and Philodendron - all very easy to care for!
Fellow New Englander! Daddy’s is gone, but not forgotten but thankfully here in NH we still have Manchester Music Mill
I miss New England! Still have a lot of friends up there - my good friend Bonnie is actually from Manchester! She and her fam live in Rockland now.
This is awesome. What an amazing sound, and great visuals as well.
Thanks John!
i came here for the hiwatt. .but you made such a great point....i love gibsons ..or at least when my heros play them....but my tele makes me sound better...for whatever reason... alot of them you mentioned..... i really love that hiwatt tho...i want one
and ive noticed webber in smaller amps....they seem to growl in a good way.....cool vid....cheers
Yeah! It's all about what we're used to!
I mostly played Fenders growing up & gigging, so that's what feels right to me.
I've got friends who got Les Pauls early on, and now that's what makes sense to them!
the bit when you kicked on the phase 90 reminded me of Big Star : )
yeah! "Feel!"
Although that one's in G - in D that riff ends up being closer to Jesus Jones "Right Here Right Now." ha! 90s!
Anytime someone mentions Big Star, an Alex Chilton gets its wings.
I almost met him once. Saw him out the back of the gig venue in the afternoon smoking..um..a "cigarette" (of some variety). I left him in peace and went to the show that night.
He was amazing. And he did a comedy routine based around "What's in Alex's bag?"
He had rolling papers and pulled them out and gave the crowd a massive wink.
Oh yeah! P90s might be the best pickup of all time!
Fat, mean, but also very emotive - kinda like Tony Soprano!
Did you know that Tony Soprano could sing opera? Soprano 😂😎👍
APOLLO SUNSHINE!!!! Man! I went to so many of their gigs in college.
I still keep in touch with the guys! Jesse was down at my place a few months ago!

Any guitar sounds great when you play it 👏👏
Aww shucks thanks so much man!
Subscribed. So nice and refreshingly different.
Yay!
Welcome Kevin!
I always keep it real here :-)
I play a 83 Japanese Vintage Telecaster as my main guitar.
Great video. Talking gear is always fun
Thanks B D!
Yeah - I could do this all day! I have so many thoughts/opinions!
"It's a fucking bad motherfucker man"
**The reason why I "like" before I even watch the video**
2020 is making me get looser and looser with my broadcast standards :-)
Btw, have you noticed how underrated the middle coil setting on a Strat is. Somewhat overlooked, I feel. Jerry Garcia was a big of the middle pick-up sound, and Layla/Dominoes era Clapton too. Great video as always, Eric.
1000% agree - all 5 positions of the strat pickups yield interesting and musical results!
OOOH THAT SOUNDS COOOOL! MORE OPTIONS!
Yup, I have a Fralin blender pot on my CIJ '68 Strat. It's amazing if you use it regularly. But if I don't pick up that guitar for a while I spend the first 1/2 hour relearning how it works 🙄
Ha! That's the fun part though!
That neck!
Yeah!
There's something MAGIC about Indonesian guitar necks - people need to know!
Nice Pulp reference too 🤘
Yeah I gotta thank them for that! Maybe even do a collab!
And yeah MIJ Fenders are BRICKS. So solid. My bigsby tele is a CIJ, and it's killer as well. You can tell that the Factory specs are TIGHT!
A collab would be killer! I love that Tele!
I just emailed them - let's see what Dan and Mick say!
Fun stuff Eric! I will have another strat sometime soon. Love that Squier.
oooooooooh send pics!
Yeah! It truly is an essential tone tool. For $150, it's a no-brainer for any tube amp user.
Hiwatt is fantastic, had one for 3 years until i discovered Dr.Z which is pretty close just slightly more wild and uncontrolled and packs a bass punch instead of a hum.
Oh yeah Dr. Z stuff is 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Wanted to subscribe after Ricky don’t lose that number.. Realized I’ve been subscribed a long time ago.. 😁👍🏻👍🏻
Ha! and Yay!
I still gotta finish that arrangement.....
Yeah, it's funny more people don't know about these import Hiwatts - but it's kind of cool to be "in-the-know."
Now we can be hipsters and say "I knew about them before everybody else" :-)
Great video again Eric! I need to get me some backing tracks to practice with. But it's nothing like being in a band again...
I really like @nowyoushred jam tracks - he does a great job. Also, you probably know this but all my backing tracks are available for free on my website - just go the the listing of any lesson and you can grab 'em!

You nailed it on the three attack dynamics and the construction. Warmoth fender licensed builds can open this up to other bodies/woods.

Any chance in showing the OD channel sometime? Badass playing btw.
I'm a weirdo - I never like the OD channels on any amp. Always a bit too saturated for my tastes.
THIS was one of my favorites from Eric.

Great gear video !

Sweet demo as always Eric. Would love to see a tab for that intro!

A Hiwatt for under three grand!
I lusted over this guitar in ‘83. Bummed I didn’t pick one up...$239 at the time. Can’t believe CV Squire’s go for $399, now?
Keep your eyes peeled for a used one - could probably get one for like $300!

As for teles, or any guitars - the best way to shop is in person. But here we are in corona-verse so that's not an option.
Avoid the USA Fenders - pointlessly expensive and feel weird
The Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian made Fenders are all potentially very good guitars!
I love the Classic 50s, & 60s series, which now I think is "Vintera."
Plus yeah the Squier Classic Vibes are so great and so cheap!
Or hunt down a made in Japan on Reverb & Ebay
Great vid! What riff is that 16 min? iris so familiar! Great work
Just improv! Some vaguely alt-sounding E to Amaj7 thang :-)
The only Gibson you can beat up like a Strat is the Firebird.
Ooooh yeah I do love a Firebird!
Used to have a Korean Epiphone Firebird - that thing was SOLID!
I've got a Joe Bonamassa signature Epiphone Firebird and though I rarely play it (out of fear of damage - it's one of the rare tobacco sunburst ones!), it's practically made of granite!! 😉
Thanks for being honest and spontaneous Eric! Are the strings on the strat 9s?
Ha yeah! Sometimes you can tell I'm too excited to focus :-)
I use 10s on all my electrics except my dano - that's got 11s because it's set up for slide.
Never heard bad boy Eric before.
2020 is making me get looser and looser with broadcast standards :-)
we must have overlapped at Berklee, i graduated in may 2000
Yeah! I was there 98'-02'
I have looked at the attenuators before, but get overwhelmed on how to hook them up.
What you'll need is 2 speaker cables and a 1/4 to 1/4 adapter: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GPP105--hosa-gpp-105-1-4-inch-trs-coupler
You'd disconnect the little flat plug from the back of your princeton, hook up the speaker cable there, & run it into the mini mass.
From the output of the minimass, you'd run another speaker cable, connect the adapter and then plug the flat plug back in to the other side of the adapter.
That way the signal goes:
amp -> speaker cable -> minimass -> adapter -> original plug -> speaker
*NEVER PLAY YOUR AMP WITHOUT THE SIGNAL GOING SOMEWHERE*
you can cook the transformer that way
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks! I might do this or I might find a used Roland Stage amp with a built in attenuator and let the Princeton be what it is.
Oh yeah a strymon deco or a Greer lightspeed would be a HUGE upgrade from the SD 1! Much more transparent

My tech put those on - I think their gotoh roller trees.
Yeah - single coil Fenders can really take the abuse. I would never hammer away on an SG or LP the way I feel so comfortable to do on my Strat, Tele, or Mustang!

Ok. No political rants here. Sorry dude. Corona craziness is starting to get to me..your videos help keep my standard insanity at manageable level.
All joking aside, I may not always watch all of them or learn every lesson note-for-note, but your uploads make me *want* to play. So, I pick up my guitar and play, and I always come away with at least one new idea, trick, technique, and so on. Thanks! Much appreciated.
That makes me so happy to hear!
I really believe that putting these vids out is my own little way of creating good vibes. To know that I'm inspiring people to say "...fuck it, I'm gonna go play some guitar."

Hey Eric, Can I respectfully ask if you are sponsored by Weber? No shame in that game, at all. Just curious. Thanks for all the amazing content. I enjoy your channel very much.
Naw, not sponsored! By now they know me and we’re buddies so I get a discount on stuff, but nothing crazy 😇
Hahahaha you probably ended up with torticollis after making the video and wanting to look at the camera from such an awkward position. That version of Squier was used by George Harrison too, I understand that they are up to the standards of the americans. Greetings from Argentina Eric, I really like how you play the guitar.
Aha that's why I've been sore all week!
