Hi, this is called alternative swing, you can either bind i.e. mouse button 5 for alt swing, or you can hold ALT + LMB = left to right swing. Bear in mind that if you do combos, the result might differ.
Either you have no other weapon, or you might have a different keyboard layout enabled that overrides numbers 1-7. For consoles i would check gamepad keys.

THe most dangerous thing in Chivalry 2 to someone who is level 250+ is your own teammates, lag, archers and other 250+ players.
Pretty much nailed it. Big emphasis on teammates mounting catapults :) then ballistae, hanging objects, that insta-kill, and greed :)
