    Jimmy was one of my favorite fighters back then, so I was really looking forward to this fight when it happened. Young had a winning streak going and was named 1981's comeback fighter of the year....he had even gotten his weight back down to 216 during the streak. Young certainly was in disappointing shape for this fight (even in shape he probably doesn't beat Page) But, I was hoping, and there was talk of a possible fight against Holmes. (Holmes obviously would have preferred fighting Young over Page) For me as a Young fan, it would have been nice to see him get another title shot, but Holmes surely would have dominated an aging Young at this point in his career..

      @Charismaniac 3 года назад +7

      As much as I like, respect and appreciate both Jimmy Young and Greg Page, I have to say that Larry Holmes was simply on a much higher level in terms of skill and determination. He had more power than both men and would beat them but they'd give him a run for his money. All three are underrated. Jimmy Young is possibly the most robbed heavyweight in history. Larry Holmes also never got the credit that he deserved and he got robbed a couple of times as well. Greg Page, with his talent, could've done a lot more. Kinda reminds me of what Carl Williams and Tony Tubbs could've been.

    • @flipurtop
      @flipurtop 3 года назад +1

      @@Charismaniac Totally agree! Holmes was/is so underrated...in his prime I believe that he gives any heavyweight, from any era A LOT of problems. Page I agree could have been much more. Carl The Truth, he had a lot of talent as well, but didn't have the chin that Holmes and Page had. To me, a guy like Razor Ruddick (if he could have controlled his "all-out" style) would have done much better in the 70's-80's, but instead he ran into Tyson in the 90's.

      Young was better fundamentally. In his prime, he could slip punches better than the Ali off his layoff. Fundamentally he was better.
      However Ali could hit harder, his chin was better (Young still had a great chin). And when Ali was on form was quicker than Young.
      Both could slip, take punches, block , clinch. Ali just danced and hit quicker, harder and was tougher and would always come bk.
      Young was more cautious. Always looking for opportunities. He was a chess master at fighting.
      He's much slower here though than he was in his prime. And judging by his speech after he fought Cooney gradually stuttered.
      Sad coz he seemed a decent man. He was a very underated fighter. R.i.p Jimmy the best fundamentally in terms of fundamentals of the golden era.

      Ali hit harder than Young, was quicker of foot and hands, but by the time they fought. Jimmy was in better shape than Ali and countered him all night.
      Only the silly thing he did, cost him that night. Ali wasn't on form. Prime Ali is better.
      But Ali was hitting his washed up stage. Young was making everyone look bad. In the 80s, you can see his skills are not the same. Young was once quick and elusive.
      After the Norton fight...not so much
      Similar in the sense they were outside fighters, went to the ropes, could block very well and knew when to clinch. Both had excellent boxing IQs. Not to mention great reflexes.
      Young had better fundamentals and timing, Ali would keep his hands low. Young was probably even harder to hit in the head than 70s Ali with his great timing and skills.
      There were similarities. Young being better fundamentally than Ali , more of a clever fighter In his prime...which is Incredible. Ali being quicker, with a higher KO percentage percentage.
      Ali had more gifts physically, and was the better overall fighter. Young had better fundamentals and was cautious. Young also was a counter puncher/ outside fighter. Ali was a pure outside fighter, who fought more aggressive than Young with much more footmovement. Either though he wasn't known as an aggressive fighter. He wouldnt play the fight Young does..
      Young was chess, Ali was a bit less chess, more finesse. At dancing he was the best. Fundamentally Young, could counter correct. Alis punches had more effect. But when jimmy planted his feet, he had a decent punch when it did connect..
      Not like the other contenders though
      He wasn't a T Rek
      They looked a little bit a like too. (Much less so close up) Young learned a lot off Ali. And added his own thing to the game. Much like Holmes
