It had been raining hard for ten days straight, everything was flooded out. I was working doubles and sleeping in a closet down the hall. Suddenly, a fire panel in my office went off. The fire chief told me that at one time it was connected to a resort hotel in our district but since it had been disconnected not to worry about it. I looked at the panel for about ten seconds, then decided to err on on the side of caution, so I put out an "any available unit call." I then called fire department dispatch and told them what was going on. In the middle of our conversation an off duty firefighter on our frequency said:"I have confirmed flame and smoke coming out of the tower."
For about two seconds myself and the FD dispatcher had an "oh sh*t" moment because we knew that the tower was filled with people evacuated from their homes. I then said:"Send me everything you got." He replied:"You got it."
I pulled out the mass casualty book and started my paperwork imagining the worst possible outcome.
Seven minutes later the same firefighter came back on the frequency and said:"I got the fire out." I then called FD dispatch and told him what happened. Incredulously he said:"I have sixteen fire trucks headed your way", then he loudly exhaled and said:"hang on." I heard radio squabble then the dispatcher said "the fire chief wants to go up there with three trucks." I replied:"go ahead."
It turned out that someone had thrown a lit cigarette into a display of fake plants and the fire had scorched the walls of a hallway and several doors, but that was the extant of the damage. That off duty firefighter saved a lot of lives that day-he had pulled a hose from the stairwell to do it.

To the person who said “no one calls 911 for domestic abuse,” I call bullshit. Last summer, I caught this guy speeding southbound on my street at the time with his (presumed) girlfriend in the passenger seat. He whips into the driveway for a park directly across the street from my house, pulls to the very back of the parking lot, and killed the headlights. I was outside smoking because family was visiting. Five minutes goes by, and she hops out distraught. He joins her and loud argument ensues (I knew it was loud because they were roughly 100 yards (91 meters) away and I could make out a couple expletives. I finished my cigarette and went back inside, grabbed my phone, went to the bathroom, and called to report potential domestic abuse. No idea what happened, but the dispatcher pissed me off by asking what the ethnicities of the couple were. Dafuq does that matter?
