  • Beginner friendly FreeCAD modelling tutorial explaining how to trace a truck door hinge in FreeCAD and create all the features using the part and part design workbench which can be used for 3D printing. Using the knowledge learnt from the 'Learning FreeCAD for Beginners' series we learn;
    * Understand how to tackle what looks like a more complex shape.
    * Use the image workbench for tracing and scaling the reference material.
    * Use the sketcher polyline tool in different modes to allow us to quickly trace the outline.
    * Use mirroring to take advantage of symmetry.
    * Use sub-shape binders from part design to bind and offset the middle edge to make a path to be swept.
    * Learn how to join edges together to create a final path for sweeping.
    * Create a more complex feature easily using the sweep and a profile along the offset.
    * Use boolean tools such as union and intersection (common).

    Dang the idea of using an intersect would never have occurred to me, but it's such an elegant solution!

      It's a very similar workflow to what I taught in the learning freecad series ruclips.net/video/fVkqD_Yu7aY/видео.html which I used for a fork and spoon. Many possibilities and it makes what first looks like a complex object actually quite easy to model. Glad you enjoyed.

    Very nice. I've found FreeCAD's workflow to be completely baffling. This is more advanced than I'm ready for but I feel much better informed.

    Hi, thanks for another great tutorial. Is there any chance you can share a link to that technical drawing as well please ?

      From version 0.21 onwards, there have been slight changes in the operation, but it is now possible to adjust the image in the Image Plane setting after importing.
