  • I am being overrun by lawn moss this year. It’s spring in the Pacific Northwest. And for me that means preparing my yard and lawn for coming season. This video will show the common man how to maintain his lawn with items from the big box stores, and not have to go through the challenges of purchasing professional grade materials, herbicides, and seeds to have an amazing lawn that makes your neighbors jealous.
I started off by mowing, trimming and edging may lawn to its regular height, for me that’s about 2 1/2" this year. This helps be see the large patches of moss and weeds that will need attention. In this video I am going to tackle the moss, which unfortunately grows unabated for most of the fall and winter, once the rain starts.
I normally use Lilly Miller's MOSS OUT, but this year I am going to try MossX from Scott's. I am a huge fan or their seed and fertilizer, so why not!
After I let it sit for a few day while I was out of town, the results were extremely evident. The moss had turned from a green/yellow to a brown and black. The MossX was very effective. I just followed the directions on the bag, and applied it with a Scott's Broadcast Spreader! WIN!
The next step was using a Power Dethatcher with a scarifying blade on it. To say this made quick work of the moss would be an understatement, it tore it from the ground and deposed it in a pile to be raked up and disposed of. If you don;t have a power rake/dethatcher/scarifier, you can use a rake with metal tines, or a dethatching rake, the goal is to get in there and pull it all out of the lawn!
The ground is now clear of moss and I can get on with the rest of my Spring lawn program! Check out the video and see how I did it, don’t forget to put your questions and suggestions in the comments!

How clean the moss outer edge of the lawn. Outside of lawn moss everywhere

If it's on the sidewalk use a pressure washer. If it's in landscape beds or in dirt you can use the moss spray or granuals. Do not use either on stone or concrete, it will stain.

I'm just South of you in Portland. If you spread lime on your lawn in the winter about 1x/month it will prevent the moss from growing. It won't kill it but it will prevent it. Last year I forgot to do this and it was the first year in about 5 that I had moss in my lawn.

i thought by raking it out or thatching it you would spread the moss seeds around more

I usually have already treated the moss with a herbicide prior to dethatching. The dethatcher removes the dead/dying debris.

I just watched another video of a fellow spraying baking soda to change the PH of the dirt and it did kill the moss. It did kill the moss. Would that also harm the grass I wonder?

You have to be careful about lawn pH. A soil test is necessary. But I've seen baking soda used on roof moss before.

I wondered that too, he never said if it wasn’t harmful to grass. Lime starves the moss and doesn’t hurt the grass; I have used it several times…….then I give it one good dose of Moss Out with a spreader and water in real good. I’m in Oregon so we get lots of moss due the our rain!!!

I'm North of Seattle, it's almost as prevalent as the grass.

@@DadItYourselfDIY Thanks for your quick response and I don't wish to be awkward but 'Moss Out' is a proprietary name and I doubt it is available in Ireland where I live. I was hoping you could identify the product by it's chemical composition so that I could find a similar product.

Scott, I'm going to try baking soda this year. Have you ever heard of this? It's supposed to change the pH in your soil so Moss won't grow.

These two corners of may yard don't get direct sun until late May, so I'm always fighting that. One of these days I'm going to get a soil sample and REALLY figure out what I need to do in addition to the regular stuff. Let me know how it works?

@@DadItYourselfDIY ..Nothing, it just sweetens the soil so Moss doesn't like it. I've been using it about 3 years now.
