I honestly get more annoyed with the slow moving traffic in the slow lane + traffic constantly filtering into that lane. I also get more more annoyed with BMWs coming up at 90mph behind me every 30 seconds. I have no idea why people never complain about this, but complain about people in the middle lane. All you have to do is wait for the person in the middle lane to go past, then you can move across, or if you are in the fast lane, you can just continue further down the road to overtake the vehicle in the middle lane before moving over. If you are in the slow lane your journey is going to be far more hindered by lorries than middle lane drivers. They are not sporty at all , more " AUTO-OBESITY 😅" really. Take ages to accelerate and slow down with size and weight. Keeps brake and tyre industry in business. I don't think there is an issue with middle lane hoggers per se, I think the issue is with them driving too slow. There is probably also an issue with people in lane 1 driving too fast. I would say that if you are driving at 70mph on a motorway then a lot of the time you would be better off in lane 3 than lane 1. I assume as you were in cruise control at that speed then the motorway was pretty quiet so in that case I think middle lane hogging at 70mph is the safest possible way to drive in that scenario. You are away from any traffic driving under 70mph in the slow lane, you are out of the way of anyone doing 70mph+ in the fast lane and you are going at a speed where nobody in the slow lane will be undertaking you unless they are a maniac.

You actually find this is common amongst all ages. My experience tends to be that people who passed in the 70s and 80s have the belief that the lanes are speed based. I’ve also had older people suggest the motorway is some form of weird dual carriageway and the longest slip road in the world, where you are supposed to be in the middle lane, the right lane is for over taking and the left is for leaving the motorway. 😂
I think the fact that lessons have never included motorway driving and the fact that at least one half of drivers are either nervous, dangerous, scared, completely incompetent or a mix is why things like middle lane hogging will be around forever.

I think undertaking should be legal if someone is hogging the middle lane - as the cop was - as that lane should be used for overtaking, which means, if you're going slower than the speed limit, the traffic in that lane should be passing you - and then going to to the left lane safely ahead of you. If you're doing the speed limit and overtaking traffic in the middle lane, that traffic should not be there.

If you are going to be overtaking someone soon (say in the next 10-20 seconds) then stay in the overtaking lane, if you are not overtaking soon then return to lane 1.

I was of the understanding that more motorway accidents are caused by people disrupting the flow of traffic. So let’s say you sit in middle/ fast lane bang on 70mph and don’t move across if it’s empty, you could then be holding up numerous cars behind you that were all comfortably doing say 75mph. You causing them to have to slow down/ brake causes a chain reaction to the cars behind you increasing chance of accident. It also increases congestion making the motorway less efficient. I think there should be more fines and penalties for those hogging lanes and not necessarily for speed (unless obvious dangerous driving). Ironically it’s sometimes more dangerous to do the speed limit as not everyone else is expecting it and you aren’t the Good Samaritan you think you are 🙄

    • @mikehunter2844

The reason hoggers cause congestion is because most drivers think it's illegal to pass the hogger on it's left. If a hogger is doing 50mph the rest slow down to that speed. That makes them equally responsible for holding up traffic.

@@mikehunter2844 Not so much the legality, more the risk. Undertaking carries the risk of the middle lane hogger deciding to move to lane one without bothering to check their mirrors thus sideswiping you (if they are hogging the middle lane there is a good chance they are gormless enough to do this), and if you were involved in an accident whilst undertaking, you would very likely take a share of the blame since in at least some circumstances it could be classed as careless driving. The problem then is eveyone has to move into lane 3 to overtake the hogger, which slows lane 3 down due to the traffic density, then EVERYONE ends up creeping past them with a speed differential near walking pace. This causes delays and accidents however its not getting addressed partly because police forces are relying on Speed Camera to manage the roads, which are great at monitoring speed but useless at managing other bad and dangerous driving practices. If you are doing less than 60 in an old car or towing or out for a cruise, expect a continuous line of lorries overtaking with each one taking up to a minute to compete its manoeuvre. At 65 mph a driver can expect to negotiate endless trucks on their way to the inside lane, and the middle lane blocked from any attempt to pull out again. Add the many exits/entry points of urban motorways, and the 70 - 90mph nose-to-tail traffic jam that operates in lane 3, and it isn't difficult to see why drivers use the middle lane unless the road is clear.

Also extremely common in Ireland. The Irish drive on the left so the rules should be broadly similar to those in our neighbouring island, drive on the left and pass right. What really happens is that a lot of drivers immediately move to the middle lane on joining the motorway, even if lane 1 is empty. Others go straight for lane 3 and camp out there, afraid to move in when lane 2 is empty.
It often happens that more progress is made in using lane 1 as it becomes the fastest lane of the 3 lanes.
This is not by accident, I have often followed Police on their routine journeys without high speed or lights and the lane 3 cars ahead of them miraculously move in to let the cops, and me, go by.
The rate of moving in drops dramatically when I am on my own and I would consider it exceptional that anyone would move in when I try to make progress in lane 3.

Under normal circumstances lane 1 is where everyone should be unless the person in front is driving slower than you. In that case you move into lane 2 to overtake and only go into lane 3 to overtake slow moving traffic in that lane.
If there is congestion it's fine to undertake as long as you are already in the faster moving inside lane. As you said, unnecessary/excessive lane changing in congested traffic is dangerous.

This is the real tragedy in misuse of public resources on a motorway or highway. The managements of most companies use a measurement called utilisation in measuring performance of capital machinery being used and they rightly insist on a high figure for utilisation. If lane 1 is empty most of the time by drivers using lane 2 all the time then your 3-lane motorway is only using 2/3 of its capacity. Lane 1 is effectively wasted.

Ok, from video I understand what they say. This makes sense on reasonably busy motorway. How to solve the issue when the traffic is dense on some parts of motorway- for example M6 Between Wigan and Preston? Lots of cars in every lane and lots of cars joining lane 1 from frequent slipways, lots of cars leaving, too. I found out that in certain situation it is better to remain in middle lane or lane 3 if you are not about to leave motorway anytime soon while lane 1 is used by cars leaving and joining. Or we can do it by the book- everyone in lane 1 struggling at 35 mph....no reason to even overtake....because after every car and truck on Lane 1 is another, and another, and so on. Should all cars struggle on lane 1 and keep lane 2 and 3 nice and empty for the sake of the rule? I noticed something similar in the city on 40 mph speed limit on 3 lanes carriageway. Let`s say that we go from outskirt to the city centre and and by following this rule we should keep left whenever possible. But what if frequently cars are parking and blocking lane 1 and lane 3 is often blocked by cars turning right on traffic lights? I realised that if I go straight for a couple of miles, it is simply more practical do 40mph on middle lane in an orderly manner rather than constantly changing lanes avoiding parked cars and causing chaos .

The problem is with drivers using lane 2 when there is no one in lane 1. You do not have a problem when there are cars in lane 1 which you anticipate you will overtake in a reasonable time frame. The problem arises when there is no one in lane 1 for miles and all the traffic is in lane 2. The problem is compounded when slow traffic occupies both lane 2 and three, especially if they match speeds to form a rolling road-block. 1 car can cause unnecessary delay if it matches speed with a slow car in lane 2 and does not overtake it.
Part of the problem is lack of practical training on motorway driving for learners who are then forced to learn the proper techniques of motorway driving on their own. Failing the possibility of government introducing a motorway element to driver training and testing, there should be at least a TV campaign stressing the need for lane discipline and using the leftmost lane for driving in as much normal traffic as possible and being at least aware of build-ups behind you if you are camped out on lanes 2 and 3 and nobody in lane 1.

If this happens and the conditions are safe for driving at the max speed, I move to the second lane (middle) and remain there until the inside lane is clear for a long distance ahead. If I am driving at the max speed - who is allowed to overtake me? I shall not be holding up any law abiding drivers. Based on the highway code, if everyone abided by those rules of driving within the speed limit and keeping to the left, then lane 1 would be ridiculously congested, drivers would be using lane 2 to overtake the slow grannies and lorries now and again, nobody would be using lane 3 as you aren't allowed to go over 70mph so using it would be pointless other than to create some space for yourself if it's too congested.

    • @adamlea6339
      @adamlea6339 3 месяца назад

No it wouldn't. If lane one becomes congested the traffic there slows down so people move to lane 2 to speed back up and overtake. If lane 2 becomes busy the traffic there slows down and people move into lane 3 to speed up and overtake. As people move right to overtake that reduces the traffic density in the left lane which then speeds up again. It is like a negative feedback. What you end up with is an equilibrium in all lanes of people moving out to overtake slower vehicles then moving back in, the traffic density in each lane remains roughly constant because the flux of traffic in and out of any lane balances. If lane 3 becomes congested that means the whole road is congested and the traffic is now slowed down or stationary in all lanes aka traffic congestion.
