This happened a lot with me in TOTK, a really cool and interesting concept is introduced of hinted at, but so many times like the Depths, the first Sky Island, or the maze ending up in the depths, or the Deku Tree, the payoff is disappointing.
I actually had a feeling that "pirates" could include Bokoblins, so I wasn't as disappointed as everyone else, but it still sucks that it's a throaway sidequest
Also, the Piratians aren't actually enemies, they're NPCs that help you. It'd be fool if there were friendly pirates

Whaat, how are the depths disappointing? They’re a stroke of genius, something only Zelda could pull off.
I see such a big disconnect between what the devs and the fans.
The first go out of their way to keep Zelda relevant, the second always expect Zelda to copy some other series. I don’t really get it

This issue is a good example of the problems I have with BotW/TotK: The games can be so wide yet so shallow. I appreciate some added enemies in TotK, but it was not enough. Bokoblins, moblins, and lizalfos should not be two-thirds of the games’ combat.

I had the exact same expectations and disappointment! Lurelin was one of my favorite spots in BOTW, but it always felt terribly underused (I've heard suppositions that a 5th divine beast might have originally been intended for that area but got cut during development), so I was super stoked to find out that it was the goal of a big side adventure WITH PIRATES. Then I got there, only to discover more MFing bokoblins on a completely non-functional 'ship'. Yes, they should have used different enemies for the pirates (I feel that both games in general suffered from a lack of enemy variety), and the ship should have been sailing. It also would have been great to be able to explore inside the ship. Thanks for pointing this out!

An actual sailing ship would have made for an interesting fight where building a contraption to reach and fight it would be necessary, but we got a disappointment copy paste

the fact they don't even have anything to recognise them as pirates is what ruined it for me. I could deal with the other parts I guess, but other than the fact they were on a pirate ship, you couldn't even tell they were pirates

I was so hoping for them to be human pirates. Why even call them that if they're just bokoblins. Also it all amounting to a horde battle is wack. Defeating the pirates should have been more involved.

Not as disappointing as the 100 crimson Nirnroot side quest from the xbox 360 version of Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim. That was hell wandering around Black Reach for hours just to get a god damn book as a reward.

This video came up reccomended because I've been getting back into TOTK recently. Your quality of storytelling and editing was so good, I thought you had 10s or 100s of thousands * subscribers! Just wanted to say you're doing a great job and you've gained a new sub who is going to go back and watch everything. Thank you for all you do!

For me, I kinda expected it. In Spirit Tracks, they had pirates... which were just miniblins.
It's a shame human-like monsters are rare to fight. Like even Vaati in Minish Cap, he transforms before you fight him as the form he kept for the whole game. The closest we have is Yuga, Agahnim or Ghirahim.

I really thought it would have the storyline as the 4 major phenomena but damg. This is one of my critiques of the games really, as detailed as the world some are just so shallow. A random fetch quest that you can just randomly complete by coincidentally having the required item already in your inventory to a quest where you need to find something or someone which is pointlessly easy.

Great points! I think they could have developed the entire village of Lurelin into a "dungeon" in the traditional Zelda sense. You defeat lesser enemies to enter parts of it, get items to unlock other parts, opening up the area bit by bit, ending in a final boss fight. Instead TOTK quests are all alike and the puzzles are repetitive. I do enjoy discovering sceneries. It is a sort of self-defined reward system, unlike the set-piece rewards in most game.

It’s funny I had the opposite experience. I was kinda annoyed by everyone telling me about the village, while I was on some other quest.
When I went there, I was pleasantly surprised by one of the most elaborate quest and one of the most complex enemy encampment in the game.
What was disappointing is the somewhat elementary use of ultra hand. They could have expanded on that.
    Overall, a great quest imo

Some aspects of totk are so shallow that the devs literally gave us the ability to just build a hover bike and skip over it, which was arguably the funnest part of playing this game to me.

the quest quality was replaced by dungeon quality.. oh and the caves are nice too. but shrine quests suck compared to botw. and they missed so much potential with pirate questline. would of been super cool to explore a pirate ship. see a special pirate captain boss, etc. shame really. rebuilding leurin was unfun btw

Tears of the Kingdom was massive and had enough things to be its own game instead of being just Breath of the Wilds again. But Tears of the Kingdom does suffer from being basically a Breath of the Wild expansion that grew into becoming its own standalone game.
If Tears of the Kingdom had been completely detached from Breath of the Wilds, I'm convinced that the equivalent to this quest would have had its own enemies rather than reusing Bokoblings. But, because Tears of the Kingdom is directly built upon the bones and muscles of Breath of the Wilds, it probably made more sense to reuse assets rather than create unique enemies for this mission and region.
Honestly. All of this makes me interested on where 3d Zelda goes after BOTW/TOTK. It will clearly follow the path cemented by these two games, but I think that it will be detached enough from this duology to be fully its own thing.
A bit of how Wind Waker, while clearly an evolution of Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, was separated enough from the two to be its own thing and bring new stuff to the formula.

Too bad they couldn’t have increased the map in a wider scale instead of adding the depths.
Imagine other lands/islands to traverse to meeting zonia tribes and other races still able to go to the skies and under water areas. So many good potential opportunities missed.

You forgot to mention the Gerudo pirates in Majora's Mask. Maybe that's not one of your favorite games, but it's one of mine (along with Wind Waker, which is another reason I love Lurelin Village; it's literally supposed to be Outset Island from Wind Waker. But I digress.)
I think Gerudo pirates could have been cool, too... it could have been something else you had to do before their regional phenomenon was completed, or before they returned to Gerudo Town. But yeah, that probably would have meant having to kill "human" enemies.
... or maybe not! Maybe they could be "freed" by removing their pirate hats or something, and then they would wake up and realize they were possessed by Ganondorf or something. I don't know... lots of options they could have gone with but didn't, I guess...

Look I'm not anti modern Zelda at all in fact there's a lot I enjoy the modern open world format but I definitely agree changes need to happen.
    1. More enemy variety, particularly region specific enemies, don't just make us fight bokoblins, lizalfos and moblins over and over, that be like if they had a Mario where you only fight goombas, koopas and piranha plants with few other enemies.
    2. More varied side quests/adventures with very different set pieces, puzzles and rewards.
    3. Traditional dungeons - yes this is repeated to death but these need to return, the terminal system is getting old and tiresome and lacks the depth of the old puzzle gauntlets. While I enjoyed the bite sized shrines I feel they aren't a good enough trade-off for classic style dungeons.
    4. Story should be linear, tbh I actually enjoyed totks story but I feel the way it was told just didn't work. The memory approach worked fine with botw story but that's cause the story there was designed to be told in any order. With totk I feel they tried to have a more plot heavy story but it's effectiveness is ruined by the out of order sequences.
    5. Better rewards - I often found I didn't have a lot of incentives solving side quests as a lot of the time the rewards didn't feel like they were worth it.

I disagree that Lurelin Village restoration is the upside of the quest. It's such a downgrade on the Tarrey Town quest, in part because you're able to do it all at once rather than it being spread over a longer period making it feel trivial, and Ultra Hand at its best gives players the tool for creative solutions, while this is... 'place the specific thing in the specific slot' feeling a lot more prescriptive in how you go about solving things. Yes, the pirate implementation is a copy/pasted quest put into a more interesting situation, but for me the real disappointment is what could have been Tarrey Town 2.0 wound up being feeling like an Ultra Hand tutorial about half way through the game.
(IIRC There is one pirate encounter where it's _two_ pirate ships. With the exact same crew - Which means it's not even the most spectacular implementation of the pirate ship monster forces)

I'm just now realizing this but they could have had a sailing ship in the sea if they wanted to. It's kinda already in the game: The Stormwind Ark. It even has cannons. Just copy and paste it. They do that with everything else in this game.🫠
