Truck Camper I built in One Day Without Tools With Less Than $200!

  • This is the simplest pickup truck camper set up you will ever see. It took me a little over an hour to really plan and build. No Glue. No Screws. Everything is held together by tape, bungie cords, velcro and gravity. I know that sounds ghetto, but it works! I found everything that I needed at local stores. I bought the plywood for the bed and table at home depot and they cut the piece that I needed. Home Depot also had the milk crates that I needed as well as the clay pots that I use as a heater when it gets cold. the plastic drawer units that I vel-croed together I got from Walmart along with many other things like the guerrilla tape I used to line around the milk crates so they don't move. Bungie cords hold the bed to the side of the camper and the weight of the bed pushes down on the milk crates and the guerrilla tape stops the milk crates from sliding. I give a full tour inside and out. The coolest thing to think is that if you have a truck with a camper shell already on it, then you can go build your own stealth camper after watching this video. I hope this video inspires you as much as I was inspired when I discovered this lifestyle!
    Estimated cost of the camper:
Camper shell = $800 - Leer dealer in Indiana
    Ply wood = $35 - Home depot
    Plastic drawer units = $10 x 2 = $20 - Walmart
    Gorilla Tape = $8 walmart
    adhesive Velcro = $15 - home depot
    Milk crates = $7 x 8 units = $56
    Bungee cords = $10 - harbor freight
Cushion for bed = free - friend

Creative! Pickups have so much more useable space in the bed compared to any minivan or SUV too, and so versatile, one day a camper the next day moving a refrigerator. Nicer as a daily driver than a van too. I just got a ford ranger, so now I need to get some type of shell.

If he's not traveling across the country yeah, otherwise too risky. Every state has their head up their ass when it comes to window tint, that where one grade is legal in one state there's a very high chance that the next state over will issue you a $200 ticket for having "too dark" of a tint. He should get that film which is just a bunch of tiny holes. Harder to see in but for some reason legal. It's a pain in the taint when it comes to the tint

Never thought about using a work-style shell; I always had the idea of having glass and set some low-profile solar panels on the inside facing out, but because of the angle of that shell, it might actually be a better option with some minor modifications.

I didn't see the 'height' as an issue. Most garages are 7 foot minimum no? I wondered whether you can sit up, say to use your computer, in the back. I'm 6foot, so maybe you're shorter. That's a benefit of a van. Are the windows secure?

Chris, great video man. I really appreciate the simplicity, and you explained things really well. I don't have any tools either so this video hit the spot.
Mind if I ask for some specifics on the truck itself? I'm looking at buying one soon but have only ever driven tiny 4-door sedans. Is that a standard-size cab? 6-foot truck bed? Any other info you can provide on the specific model, or upgrades/accessories that you got with it (beyond what comes standard)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to pickup trucks.

    • @ChrisDemchuk

myrandomlife not really, it would add length to the truck as a whole and would make driving in tight areas that much more difficult. Also the fact that the bed would be 5 ft and not 6 ft. The camper configuration would have to be totally different as with a 5 ft bed you would have to sleep corner to corner meaning head in one corner and feet in the other. Also finding the right size mattress
