Thanks for watching this one! I have a few more facts/stories up my sleeve for a future video like this, but are there any events that you can think of that I should include in a sequel? Any well-known quirks in Newfoundland that other Canadians probably don't know about? Could be a little fact or a full story... if you got a good one, please let me know what you're thinking of!
That was interesting. I'm amazed that you think Richard Squires was a horrible fellow. How about Joey Smallwood? For progressive Newfoundlanders of my generatioin --I'm 75--Joey Smallwood would be a reviled figure, right? I did detect a Newfoundland expression when you said that "every window in the place was beat out". I think the Mainlander would say, "smashed". So, there you are! You can claim to speak a bit of Newfoundland English after all.
Pretty fitting you release this video the day after our newest (hopefully maybe this time for good), hockey team announced that they will be called "The Newfoundland Regiment". Its such a perfect name for a team to spread the word of our history to those who may not have known about it.
I started working on this video 4 days ago, hoping to have it ready for today. When I saw the news just yesterday about the team name, my first instinct was pride... but my second instinct was "I hope this news helps boost my video a bit" haha It really is a great name and logo. Everything about it I love.
Great video. While I live in the "Boston States", my great grandparents came from Renews, and I have been there and Newfoundland is amazing on so many levels. I try to learn as much as I can and was happy that I knew about most of these. I can't wait to go back.
As a Torontonian who has recently moved to Newfoundland, I appreciate your videos a great deal. When is there ever *not* any condensation here in NL? 😂 I am looking forward to celebrating my first July 1st here this year. The rest of Canada has no memory or recognition of Canada's contribution and great loss of young lives during the battle of the Somme, so I think it's great that Newfoundlanders still take a moment to remember The Regiment
@mark_royle_newfoundland yes! Apparently I've been pronouncing it won't fit 4 years while living here...lol... Actually, it was the story about Sir Richard Squires. I honestly had no idea he was that bad. Now I want a video of the best and worst of Newfoundlanders!
@@discoveringnlwithkevin His government must have been pretty bad, if the long-suffering Newfoundland male population attacked the Parliament. Who stirred them up? I guess there was no loss of life unlike what happened at the American Capitol on Jan. 6, 2020 when the President incited a mob to attack Congress.
Actually, there are many "correct" pronunciations. Newfoundland to rhyme with "understand" is the most current and posh one, I suppose. My father, who wasn't a Newfoundlander used to say, New Found Land--3 distinct words. That was at one time an acceptable pronunciation. Then, there are pronunciations like New fun (no "d" pronounced)lan (no "d" pronunced) that you hear even today. That's why I say that Newfoundland with the cadence of "understand" is a bit more posh than New-fun-lan.
Important topics here and the number of viewers' interest in a short period reflect their needs. Good job, Mark. You don't just think, but go outside the box on these topics - July 1st, proper pronunciation of our island and the variety of dialects throughout the province - all need to be said to generations of people with Newfoundland ties but have never been here, and a reminder to us who live here - namely, Memorial Day. Great work!
Newfoundlanders are good people to be around during any kind of tragedy. You know what I mean. I can remember several times that if someone was suffering a loss, an injury, sickness, trauma etc.... The community just responded in any way they could. Your kitchen will be full of food and respectful visitors, men will chop wood, shovel snow, etc. Women will cook, clean, babysit etc. But on an emotional level, they all have your back. I don't think that's just my community. I love my Newfoundland
Thanks for the history lesson. Love learning about all the different aspects of places that make this country so great! Never been to Newfoundland, but we are coming for a couple of weeks this year in late May, and love learning more about it pre-trip! Very excited to come visit.
You may find it very much cooler in late May. Bring lots of warm clothes or come in late July or August. When I first arrived in Newfoundland in mid-May in 1970, I was shocked by how cold it was and I had only my summer clothes with me. I asked my mother to send me my spring and fall outfits.
This vid is a home run! I'm fascinated by all the topics you touch on, and even hear distant echoes of Richard Squires reverberating in Washington today. Tell all the NL stories you're inspired to tell - we're ready to listen and appreciate!
I can't remember being taught anything about WW I and WW 2 in school other than brave men fought two awful wars and we will always remember their sacrifices on Nov 11th. We don't only not know Newfoundland's history, we don't know our own. I have learned a lot of history from the internet which was not around in my school days.
Teachers don't dwell on the horrors of war, I guess. We were crisply told by the head of our high school history teacher that we could study the causes of a war and what happened after a war, but we couldn't study the war itself. I think he was a British World War 2 survivor and he didn't want young men to glorify war at all. And maybe, the events of WW1 and WW2 were to horrible for him to recall. A lot of history was passed over in our high school history classes, it seems.
Thank you for a informative video. I knew well about WWl and the regiment from NL but what I never knew about was Squire ? … now I have to look that up .
I didn't know that Richard Squires was that bad. I thought that the circumstances of the Great Depression just got to the crowd that marched on the Colonial Building.
Another well-done video, Mark! Thank you! I absolutely understand why people from outside of Canada would be challenged by the pronunciation of Newfoundland; it's a three-word compound name and any of the attempted pronunciations could very well be correct. But, after more than 75 years of being a province of Canada, it baffles me that so many Canadians still don't know how to say it. Maybe school kids could be taught the pronunciation NOOF-n-LAND (said with the cadence of Disneyland)? They're pretty much all familiar with that word! 😂 Cheers, my friend!❤
My son was doing a project in Grade 5 on Newfoundland and Labrador. His teacher--I think she was from Saskatchewan--said to me, "It's a nothing province. I can't imagine why they (his friend and him) chose this province." That's worse than not being able to pronounce the name correctly.
@dinkster1729 Oh, that's awful! You're right, of course. That's a whole lot worse than a simple mispronunciation! I hope your son and his friend gave that teacher a little schooling! Thank you for your comment.
The province itself still recognizes July 1 as "Memorial Day" and not "Canada Day". The day is given to provincial public servants as such. Should remain that way too.
@@peterdaigle4772 lol I know right? Even the two cities look alike except Saint John NB is Irving oil/pulp mill theme park and St Johns NL is North Atlantic clean rainbow city. Never been to Newfoundland but will pay a visit at least once in my lifetime.

My main issue with him is that he stole from the public purse so he and his wife could live in a luxury suite at the old Newfoundland Hotel and take frequent trips to London, New York, Montreal, etc. Some of the final charges against him while he was Prime Minister involved misappropriation of thousands of dollars for himself and his buddies ($15,000 here... $5,000 there...), while he "was forced" to cut the dole from $1.80 to $1.50 PER MONTH (!!!) during the depths of the depression. He was no leader.
@@mark_royle_newfoundland He sounds a lot like ruthless politicians today, right? My mother told me that the government of Canada gave families $10 a month as relief during the Depression. I listen to all this talk about deporting undocumented migrants and barring refugees from Trump's America and the cutting of EI in Canada and the refusal of the government to acknowledge the work of family caregivers who look after disabled family members financially etc., etc., etc. and I think, "Hey! I think I"ve heard this story before." Both my parents survived the Great Depression and the 2nd World War! So, yes!, I've heard these stories of great hardship when I was young. Most of the time, my parents didn't talk about those times, but in times of crisis, under stress, my mother would recount how her family survived.
I always found it funny and or weird that we as Newfoundlanders, are always so crooked with the mispronunciation of our name. When we’re all guilty of doing the exact same with names like Finland, Ireland, Poland, and even in this video you pronounced Ferryland as if it was spelt Lind. We all pronounce land like Lind. Fin-Lind or Ire-Lind.
worst thing Newfoundland ever did was join canada, I say america first, before we are stuck staying poor . we have an opportunity we should take it. no fixing canada. Newfoundlanders are better. we can be better.
Would you agree there's more than one Fogo Island accent? Mark said there was one. The school year I was there, there was definitely a Tilting accent which was quite distinctive from the accent of the town of Fogo. It seems to have faded a fair bit among the young.
Mark when you say Newfoundland, you say new fun land not New fin land. Now, maybe you pronounce fin as fun but most visitors that I have seen and heard are (in an effort to be correct) pronouncing it New FIN land…. does anyone really pronounce it like that? I’m not criticizing you Mark; I love your videos. Hi buddy. I’d love to see a sequel follow up to this. I also put up a couple videos on my channel that I found from an old album from 1992. I burned the CD and recorded it to my laptop. One of them depicts about the fishery moratorium. You have my permission to reference it if maybe. I also heard our league QMHL is going to NL and the team will be named the Army Regiment effective next hockey season 2025-26.
