So I have made many more baskets since making this video - mostly as gifts - some bigger and some smaller, so stay tuned for a video showing how I made them! I am hoping to start selling a few things on Etsy soon too! Thank you everyone for all your support :-)
I loved your first birch bark basket! ❣ I'm about to make my first birch bark container and your video really helped with giving me the idea of sewing thank you so much for sharing 😊
Terrific basket that is all the more special because you made it with your own hands (and with the help of your handy husband). Wonderful keepsakes like these will make your new home all the more special.
You're Welcome! I was looking around how to make a birch bark Container, was afraid that its kinda hard to make one, but you also were an Amateur at that Point you made the video i guess and did an outstanding job so now you Made me confident to make one myself! Good inspiration, thanks! 🤩
My husband is currently moving an old pile of firewood. Some of that birch bark is the only thing left after the wood has rotted away! Durable stuff that birch bark is. I ironically live in Birchwood, Alaska.
It was good ,,,, birch bark was used for writting ancient Indian literature too 2500 years back ,, Oldest books are made with it ,, it is known as bhojpatra too in india ,,, but your concept is very relaxing 👍👍 Keep it up ,,, Stay safe too
Awesome job!! Did it stay that nice I wonder because they say you have to boil it first. I have some fresh birch bark that's still soft and would love to try it out. Thank you for you video. 🤗
Mary Zylema thanks so much. I never heard of boiling it but I have used a wet towel with a hot iron if it gets too dried up to work with. You can see how I do it in my video where I make a larger basket here ruclips.net/video/Gl4tZciBEcM/видео.html
That’s depends on how it is done. Real harm can be done if it isn’t done correctly. We have plenty of downed trees so there’s no need for us to take from a healthy living tree.
Good video thanks for sharing...but that's not yucky stuff. That's premium better than any fertile soil you can buy. Next time put it in your garden or back to forest floor. Stay awesome.
if you do sew make the stitches one long and one short so that the birch does not crack. If The stitches on one line it weakens the birch. Do not sew in the lines on the birch it is a weak part of the biircch.
Thank you for the input. That was one of our earlier videos and we are learning as we go. I like to think we have gotten better since then but really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :-)
If I'll ever need to make a recipient from birch bark, it will be in a situation when I will not have all these tools on hand. Congratulations for peeling off dead logs, unlike most imbeciles out there, who kill a live tree just to make a RUclips video.

You can harvest birch bark off a living tree without hurting it :)
That’s depends on how it is done. Real harm can be done if it isn’t done correctly. We have plenty of downed trees so there’s no need for us to take from a healthy living tree.
Have you tried using a rotary cutter instead of a utility knife for trimming and shaping birch bark? Thoughts on one versus the other?
No, I haven’t. But I might give it s try next time!
What season were you harvesting in? Looks like autumn to me but could also be early spring?
It was autumn.
Good video thanks for sharing...but that's not yucky stuff. That's premium better than any fertile soil you can buy. Next time put it in your garden or back to forest floor. Stay awesome.
LOL! You are absolutely correct and we will definitely be making good use of it in the future!

Thank you for that! I have learned so much over the years doing this ❤️ Kathie
It is beautiful! Im in NC so there are no birch trees here. Would love to make one .
Mrs Soap Peddler's Homestead They are such pretty trees. When we harvest more in the spring I will try to see if there’s a way to send you some!
In Carolina you can find Atlantic White Cedar that should serve many of the same purposes as White Birch. You can even make a canoe 😊
Great video, but music is sooo loud
Yes it is. That was one of our earlier videos. I’d like to think we’ve gotten better over time.
Hey Maybe make a canoe next... Great Video
Canoehound Adventures that’s a huge undertaking but I have to admit I looked into it!
New sub! What state are you in?
We are in New York.
And thanks for the sub! We are already subbed to you :-)
What is sinu? Thank you
I’m using faux sinew. Real sinew would have been from a once living animal…

Unfortunately, the music became too dominant. It took some of the focus away from a good video.
Yes, sorry about that. This is one of our older videos. One of these days I’ll make a new one 👍
Music too loud.
