Stockman Original is your guide through the lost arts and the forgotten crafts. Brian Stockman is a master carver with more than 50 years of experience carving all mediums from wood, to stone, horn, bone, ivory, and ice. He has a particular speciality as a scrimshander (one who does scrimshaw), carrying on the ancient art popularized by New England whalers. Brian has spent a lifetime gathering knowledge of lost arts and forgotten crafts, all of which he shares with you.

I've been watching your channel for a long time, all of this information is invaluable for a young Viking reenactor and craftsman like myself. Unfortunately living in Georgia I don't have access to birch trees to make something like this, I'd love to be entered in. love that wee bit of knowledge regarding the basket design. I think the noble prize for tech and design should be given for the birch bark canoe. It is the mona lisa of bushcraft design. Genius. I use white spruce root. It works in a pinch.

We love watching your channel. Many years ago I bought a 1939 book called Woodcraft by Bernard S. Mason. Great book with a section on birch bark baskets and boxes among many other things. While hiking in the woods one time we found an old birch tree that had rotted and left just the bark. We harvested every scrap of it using it for many things including fire starting. Looking forward to more of your videos.

This was very interesting. I haven't made baskets from wood ir twigs. I have crocheted fabric baskets though.

Hello Lucius, l’ve never had much luck with peeling in the winter, the bark is stuck tight at that point. Maybe if you had a steam box. Good luck on the drawing.

Awesome vessel for berry picking, I have seen similar vessels made from young maple bark. I'm sure you have seen those as well.

That would be awesome, but Im a process whore. Love making things of all kinds. Just made my first batch of black powder, works great! Made a couple of capotes, a wolf ear hat, just ordered a tanned red fox hide to make a free trapper hat. Gonna steal your leather scallop hat brim so it looks like beaver tail ;) So I will watch the remainder of your published videos and see what else I can steal. Keep the vids coming!@@StockmanOriginal

I don't have birch here. ( I don't think), I use mimosa bark.

@@StockmanOriginal I'm in Florida. It's a tree that you can use for many things. They make DMT from the roots. You can also make tea with the roots and flowers. It's an anxiety medication!
It's a beautiful tree! Grows very fast. I use the seeds for bonsai. Grows 15 to 20 feet in a year!
