What a wonderful explanation of the flicking method, I thought it was all about the index finger, and I was beginning to think that mine was too short !!!! so Thanks a million for sharing this, it's the best one out there xxx

I knit the... Swiss way! Which means that I knit Continental (or is it Russsian?) Although the way you show the Continental purl is quite complicated. I keep the yarn in the back. You scoop the yarn first, put your needle through the middle of the stitch, twist and scoop the yarn again then pass under the stitch and let it go to the right needle.... I know, it’s as clear as mud but I cannot explain it any better! 😂😂😂 I wish I could demonstrate. When I go somewhere and I knit (here in New Zealand, where I have lived for the past 40+ years), people always ask what I’m doing as they’ve never seen anything quite like it. But it’s really fast and it gives a great, even tension. One hint though, I ALWAYS twist my ribs: knit the knit stitch through the back of the stitch and on the reverse row, purl the purl stitch through the back as well. It gives a beautiful texture to the rib, almost a ‘machine knit’ look.
I love your videos and tutorials. It doesn’t matter how long one practises a craft, there’s always room for learning something new! ❣️🌹

I took knitting lessons with my daughter for almost 2 years.we had so much fun! Our instructor taught us how to do the continental style. It’s suppose to be faster. Not for me either. Lol! I’m an English flicker like you.

Very clear explanation. I learned English style as a child. As a young adult I switched to Continental and I love it. I am able to get a good rhythm going. I do however, use both English and Continental when Knitting Fair Isle. Main color in left hand alternate color in right. Comes in very handy. I’m not concerned about speed. As long as I am enjoying it that’s what counts for me.

I'm the same as you, I started out throwing but then I saw a video by Very Pink Knits about flicking and it looked so smooth and even! So I was about to start a baby blanket so I said to myself that I would complete the entire blanket with flicking and at first it was really weird! By the end of the blanket my tension was smoother than ever and I was so much faster! My hands never cramp or feel tired on long knitting sessions anymore!
I'm so glad I stuck it out on that blanket!...also my hands look more graceful when flicking vs throwing...I know that means nothing but I knit in public a lot and I get a lot of lovely elderly ladies enquiring as to what I'm making that day!

I learned to knit in the third style you showed and my tension is the same throughout my projects. It is just practice, as in the two previous styles! So if you want to improve it, you can do it. Stay determined 💖

I knit the same as you, English flicking. But I think I crochet weird because I hold the yarn in my right hand for that. I learned to crochet first so it's not because I knit English style. I think I learned from books before RUclips was a thing, and it's just what I worked out at the time.

Eastern Uncrossed (some call it Eastern European or Russian). The stitch is seated on the needle with the left leg in the front and right leg in the back. Also I do Portuguese (yarn goes around your neck).

My favorite style of knitting is Combination Knitting. But my first style is Flicking and I flick pretty much like you do.
Hmm, and where did you learn that from?
Combination knitting takes advantage of the easier purl therefore I use the combination purl when I do ribbing in the round such as hats or socks. I don't find a single thing wrong with it. And yet people swear by the Norwegian Purl. Have to tell you, I am 1/2 Norwegian and don't love that purl as long as my Combination purl looks good and is fast and I have a rhythm going, it is good. If you approach the stitch right, you just know which way you will knit or purl that stitch. Do I know how to use the "right" purl? Yes, and I use it too, but not as often.
It requires learning the difference. But if you think about it, when you use an SSK is knitting through the back loop two stitches together. Not hard to learn. Who cares if someone tells you it is wrong. It is wrong if you leave it crossed on the other side. But it is way faster.
If you are used to using Combined method, you look at your stitch mount when you knit, the "wrong-way purl" is a good purl to use. All it takes in the flat is to knit the right side (knit side or public side) through the back loop.
But knitting forwards and backwards, and there are many reasons to know how to do this, you will find that one direction is throwing and they other is Continental however you can flick going backwards in Continental too which is so much easier than doing what other people show you. When one knits backwards in English, it is Continental Combined and is why I rather switched to doing that as it is easy on my hands and very fast.
I did this in order to not stress my arthritic fingers while they were healing. Now my fingers are very limber and I can write and open jars and have a good grip. My doctor is amazed.

Hello Lovely Charlotte, thanks for your videos, enjoying them ! I knit in all these styles, especially * contenental " . Actually it's Swiss knitting lol , but .. who cares ! I'learned that knitting when I was a kid 7-8 years old in school , girls had to learn to knit, crochet and sow in those days . Did I mention I'm turning 50 in April ? * laughs * .
If you relax your left index and let the yarn guide you, bet you'll get really good at contenental knitting ! Just remember to relax that finge ^^r . Contental kniting is anyways always looser than the other types of knitting you mentionned .
I am impressed that you made a video aboaut your anxiety. I suffer from that and panic attacks etc since many years too and now have stopped leaving my appartement ... I miss being outside in nature I have to admit, but hoping to go out very soon . Many hugs to you Charlotte, you touched my heart by your sincerety. Take care young lady !

Louve Rousse They say continental now because it is the traditional way of many European countries, I suppose it is to be more inclusive? I think it's a bit silly and I think you ought to call it whatever pleases you!

Hi Calamity, nice nickname ! Did you earn it lol . sorry.. only joking !
More seriously, I think your right, people should name their technic the way they want to or how they learned . Have a blessed day or evening !
