Wooddya, Thanks for this enjoyable programme where the lads try to manage the impossible and name the best England team. Well-hosted I think by Richard Keys who shows an appreciation of players from various eras!
I saw the Greavesy goal that Alan Mullery mentioned. Spurs-Leicester 5th October 1968 and I was in the Paxton Road end. He went past David Nish, Graham Cross, Malcolm Manley, Brian Potts and lastly Peter Shilton.
I would have included, the seemingly out of favour at the time, Allan Clarke and Kevin Hector at 8 and 9 respectively. Even though these two were, both of them, goal scoring greats!
This is the right team. Unlike trying to pick a world xi, the balance comes quite naturally. John Terry may have a case to be included since this selection, but McFarland would make a fine partnership with Moore.
To be the absolute best it would have to be Edwards at centre back & Robson in midfield. Mcfarland was terrific...But Edwards was a God & its impossible to not include Robson .
The way that Keys forces Shearer (at this stage in his career) into the XI when Ball & Co. were all leaning towards Sir Geoff Hurst was just pathetic IMO. & this is coming from a LIFELONG Toon fan...
How the hell can McFarland be in? He played 28 times for England during an era when we failed to qualify for the World Cup twice. Hirst quite clearly wasn't in the same class as Lineker or Shearer, what a load of old bollocks. I'm not knocking Duncan Edwards but what the hell did Bryan Robson have to do to get in? These three old farts should have been banned from TV appearances after this debacle. Mullery would have spent the entire thing banging on about Spurs and Greaves if they'd let him. Ball made an arse of himself claiming Hirst had more to his game than Shearer and McLintock is Scottish, why was he even there?

Jimmy Greaves has a World Cup winners medal now!!

Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton and Steve Bloomer were for their time as good as any of those mentioned here.
Ted Ditchburn in goal for sure.
thank you ;very interesting
i would have Dixie Dean...a goalie and a winger. no one else needed

Greaves-Lofthouse for me...
Billy Wright is a must too.
Almost....Lofthouse was a giant of a player ….But Edwards was simply a God & must be next to Moore at centre back with Robson in midfield.

Gazza scholes middle park
DIXIE DEAN ?
Alan Shearer is the best english striker of all time. From a Liverpool fan
Steven McNamara Jimmy Greaves. Still highest scorer in the English top flight history.
Really.....how old are you then …? 12.
Alan Shearer in the team? Ridiculous.....

Fair points....But it would have to be Edwards at centre back & Robson in midfield..Now THAT is the PERFECT team.
