I will never forget sitting with my mom at Taco Bell one time years ago eating as cheap as we could because we were poor but she wanted to treat me. As we were eating our one burrito and water each, Free Bird came on. I asked my mom, “Why does this band have such long intros for a lot of their songs?” As she was eating and not paying attention, she said, “Because they were getting stoned as they warmed up the song”. She then looked at me startled she said that to her twelve year old son, and corrected herself and said, “I mean it’s just the style”. This band was one of her favorites of her hippie years and I miss her. Cancer took her away but she will always live on through this music.

I named him Nathan. Hebrew for God's gift. . And now he is 24 years old. Getting his PhD and working. He is walking proof that God heard my prayer. .

I never respected my mom growing up and now she is gone. This was her favorite song she would sing it all the time. I feel so bad for treating her so badly. I just wanna hug her and apologize but she's in a better place now.

F'ing beautiful rendition of the song! Had the pleasure of seeing them play it live once in Tucson. Was standing behind my 12 year old at the time with my hand on his shoulders, I had tears streaming down my face. Singer is so soulful and does such a great job on this tune, especially live!
i just got back from Afghanistan, and my wife played this for me at the airport to welcome my unit and I back into the states, best homecoming i came home to, this used to be the song my grandfather and i used to listen to in his Truck... he passed away 5 years ago
Played this at my grandfathers funeral 6 years ago. I still live in the house where he passed and my room is right next to his and my grandmother's. And sometimes I like to play this song as a way to tell him that I will never forget him or the way he always made everything into a lesson about life. How no matter how many years pass that nobody will ever forget him. He will always be papa and he will always be remembered by every grandchild as the man who loved the beatles and beer and watching nascar. Or the guy who told the story of the three bears and the blonde bimbo chick instead of goldilocks. Or how he loved hunting and collecting rocks. Or how he always had stories from his time as a kid on the indian reservation. We love you Papa and we always will.
My son chose this song for his wedding coming in September and I'm so proud of what a man he has become and this is a beautiful and perfect song for this thank you
First time I heard it it made me emotional from there on I loved it and have listened to it repeatedly the last few weeks, makes me think of my dad lost him to cancer in 2016 and now I have my own son trying to do what's right while keeping my head above water. God bless you all that feel the emotion in this song is rare and great all at the same time.
I dedicate this song to my son... i hope when he's abit older he will understand these lyrics and realize all i ever wanted was for him to be happy and be a simple kind of man. I hope he takes his time and not live too fast. That he has to remember troubles will come....but they will pass
Lost my mom this year. I was driving this morning and first heard this song. Broke out in tears IMMEDIATELY. we go about our day to day so oblivious to the amount of absolutely raw pain we carry with us. We are only reminded when we hear a masterpiece like this. Only child here. Raised by a Saint of a mother. I miss you mom. Everyday.
Played this cover for my nephew when he was having hard times. He cried, I cried. He lost his mom (my sister) in 2010. So he called me when he needed help or just to talk. He did his best to get passed the drugs & alcohol. Was doing great! Then he was struck with lung cancer in June 2017. Five months later he lost his fight, just 2 weeks after his 45th birthday. Miss him every day. RIP Doug!
My brother got into a bad accident back in October and he had no brain activity. When they pulled plug his wife and kids got to pick out 3 songs and the last song they picked was this song. He passed away right at the end of this song. I used sing to my son every night before bed now it has such a different meaning to me.
Kyle Durand me Too! This was my song for my son who passed away at the age of 25 on July 4th 2012 he’s forever 25 and this was my song to him... it was his ringtone when he called my cell
I remember listening to this in the car with my Dad. he was my best friend. I remember us singing this at the top of our lungs. it has been 2 months and 18 days since he left me an orphan on this earth. Now I listen to this song six times a day.
That is One of the most Beautiful things about music. How songs can be personal time capsules that project us to intense emotional moments in our life. I had a Dementia Patient who said the first thing they lost that they really noticed was the ability to connect a song to a moment.. Keep listing until your healed and then listen some more to celebrate the memory..
July 20th 2014 my stepfather took his life I know how you feel and this was his favorite song when the original band lynyrd skynyrd did it, this is honestly the best cover of it I've heard
The man I called my dad passed away a little over 2 months ago, this was what he always wanted me to play on the radio in my car. It was his favorite, he used to crank it up and belt it out full blast
Losing my step dad really opened my eyes about how short life can be, all he wanted me to be was a simple man and enjoy what life has to give;It still hurts knowing hes not here physically but I know in my heart he's there watching my every step, Pops you've helped me come this far, thank you for everything
Why can't more artist put this much emotion into their songs. It takes a lot for a song to make me cry and this one got it on the first try. Gotta love Shinedown
My mother beat me endlessly, and my little brother and one day she went to far, he's no longer with me, I witnessed his death at the young age of seven, when I was eleven I had enough and went to the authorities, she's now spending life in prison, this song makes me think of everything I wanted her to be, everything I prayed everyday for, Im now 15 and near graduation, and as soon as I do im enlisting in the Marines and I am going to go lay my life down for this beautiful country I calk home, for everything its done me, I'm ready to proudly stand with my brother in arms and defend her till death undo what life has created
hey, i’m just another random 15 year old in the comments but i’m sorry collin for you loss ... my prayers and love go to you. i’m so very very very sorry ... i couldn’t even imagine what you went through 😭💔 your comment literally has me crying at 2:00am
@@rileighcushing7417 You are NOT just a random kid in the comments...your comment tells me that you have more compassion and tenderness at 15 than most adults. Much respect!
So let me get this right. When you were 7 you and your brother were beaten so bad by your mother that she killed your brother, and it took 4 years until you hit 11 to report your mother for abuse and murder?
Not often a cover is as good as the original. I do not know who Shinedown is, because I am a die hard country guy. There is so much truth in this song. Still had to believe Skynnrd wrote so many good songs. It is a tribute to those early years of the 70's for songs that are sung on award shows, song shows, and here on youtube.
This song makes me cry. I lost my step mom a couple of years ago and was like a second mom to me. The song hits home. She asked the same of me as the lyrics go. Miss you lady.
My buddy used to play this song on the guitar, and teach me how to sing. He has since passed. I cry every time I hear it. But when I see it, I can't help but listen, again. I miss you so much, big guy. Too soon.
i have no idea if anyone listens to this song anymore but if you do please take the song to heart. my grandfather passed 2 years and this song was played at his funereal, i have not heard this song before thin but hearing this song described him so perfectly. He really was a simple man who loved god and his family no matter what. i miss him everyday and listing to this song helps, but also makes me cry. cherish your loved ones because you never know when its the last time you see them.
My grandma passed away years ago and she told me this. This song is completely dead on with a life lesson. I appreciate this song very much. I have two stepdaughters and this is a perfect example of a life lesson for them
I may have already left a comment but, im so glad you sang this song w such ALL you put into it. I deserved to hear it sang this way and so do many others. It was already a great so but you sang it w an exclamation mark!!!!! Thank you Shinedown. We do in this life what needs to be done. And when we get where we cant, we have regrets. Ive done my share and more, but i still dont feel done! Love peace joy and JESUS!
I love and grew up with the LS version of this song, but I absolutely love this version. It truly gives me the chills. One of the greatest cover songs I've heard.
You need to see Brent perform it in concert. If you don't tear up, you have no soul. The crowd drowns him out at the chorus. The emotion is so raw and undiluted.
One of the best songs by them I've ever heard. This, Fly From the Inside, and Save Me are my favorites of all time! Like holy hell, just the chorus gave me chills down my spine.
Everyone here has had bad moments in life and that's fine but just remember that one day you'll remember all of the love that was given to you and you'll be happy and I want all of the sad people that are here to know that I love you guys so i want you to pull through
Best version ever by Shinedown! From the time that I was pregnant with my son, I sang this to him every single night along with your song by Elton John and I'm still singing it to this day. This song is empowering and I want my son to know that the sky is the limit and there will be ups and downs. However, there's a solution to every problem. I want him to know that I am here for him always and will have his back forever. If not standing beside him. I'll be behind him or beside him or in front of him. God bless🙏 Our children are a privilege, not a luxury 🕊️🕊️🌹🌹❤️❤️🙏💯
My mom passed away this morning and I was the one that found her and called the ambulance. She battled alcoholism and I think she tried to quit on her own. She refused to go the hospital. I think she gave up on life. Good night, mom. I love you forever.
Jess Blaire We don’t know much since we didn’t do an autopsy, but we believe she had cirrhosis of the liver. She was so sick and no one knew until it was too late.
Since everyones being depressive. My mother passed when I was 13. being 27 now. I dont speak much. Dont do anything extreme. Being diagnosed with some sorta mental illness. Grew up with a father tht worked all week and got wasted on weekends. Tho with me venting all this bs. Im happy to be who I am today. As everyone else should out there. My mother always told me lifes not fair and its tough. and I agree. I hope everyone tht listens to this song has happier memories than being depressed :) Just be you!!!
Danny Depew me too mate. .. been locked up ..slashed up party up .. this song and nathaniel rateliff hey mama and walter trout dear mama ... no surrender
The first time I herd this song was when I was with my father when I was around 12-13. It was a song he first herd when he was over seas for operation Iraqi freedom, he’s still in the army (coming on 24 years in the service) and when he goes away for a few weeks for annual training I’ll sit in my bed and listen to this song (and others he likes) and think what must be sacrificed to do what he did and what others in the service. God bless there souls, I love you dad .
My brother died to this song in May of this year. It was such a terrible moment in my life but I know he had to go. Every once in a while, I like to turn it up in my car and put the heat on. This song never fails to blow my mind. The most calming and bittersweet song on the planet.
People, it's Skynyrd, not Skynard. Doesn't matter if you love them or hate them, spell their damn name right. The best southern rock band of all time deserves that respect.
If they didnt have a tone def singer and a horrid guitarist they might would be more than a barely relavent band. Skynyrd will never be more than ok. Thay had a few good songs, but were not a good band.
My dad showed me this song. It relates to me and I cry like crazy Everytime. The lyrics are so strong and beautiful. I just love it. I listen to it all the time and it hasn't gotten played out yet like all the others. It just speaks to me and hits me right in the heart
My uncle passed away. He was the best citizen out of our little rural town. Always did good. He always took me hunting and always would come down for coffee at our house. He taught me everything I know.
My son asked me what song I wanted for the mother/son dance at his wedding. Knew right away this was the one we would use. It has always been my song for him. They even played it at his army graduation.
My best friend.. my brother.. he passed 2 months back. June 11th 2020... This was his favorite song and he had the singing voice of an angle.. sang this constantly.. I hear him Everytime this song comes on.. he was so pure hearted, loving.. hated to see anyone in pain and would do his best to make everyone happy didn't matter if he knew you or not.. i miss him more and more everyday... Rest In Peace Phillip "Bun" Daggs
my mom always showed me this song. ever since i was little i wanted to see it live soooo bad. a couple weeks ago my wish came true i saw shinedown cover it at jiffy lube live. they KILLED it such an important song to me
Lost both my parents by the age of 21, within 2 years of each other... some of my best memories would be sitting at the kitchen table with my dad cranking some tunes rocking out, then a song like this comes on, and we would get in our feelings... I love you old man, having a beer for you at the skynrd concert on the 19th buddy
No tragic backstory to go with it, just want to say how much I love this song and how it has a special place in my heart. They nailed it, best cover ever IMO.
I never thought anyone could record this classic song this well. Showdown keeps the songs originality, yet they also make it their song....Great Song and a stellar performance!! Rock on Showdown
This is the only cover I've ever heard that's as good as the original. You can hear the emotion and tell he had a connection with this song. Phenomenal version. (RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd)
As someone whos lost a little brother, a grandfather, a great grandfather, an uncle, etc, before they were meant to go, i can say this is one of my favorite in my feelings songs
This song means alot to me. I'm the last of the 8 Levi kids. I'm only 27 and I still help mom as much as I can in honor of him he song this to me to show what real respect is and it has stuck with me unlike my brothers and one sister who all threw there lives away.
I just played this song this past Monday 21st 2020 on my moms funeral she left this fkd up world at the age of 64 my mom loved my wife and i knew she would of loved this song too if she would've heard it Finally she felt in peace and happy i met an amazing and wonderful woman... ..RIP Ma this song will always be our memory.
Skynyrd is one of my all time favorites and simple man was my step dads favorite song he took his life in 2014 and its one of those songs you never forget the lyrics to
I remember sitting in the living room with my family. A family friend would play piano and guitar. He inspired me to take on his mantle in music. I've been in music since 5th grade. I love this song as it reminds of him.
This song was played at my brothers funeral, today's his death anniversary. The song was like a trademark of his, it was one of his favorites and him and my mom always used to listen to it in the car. Now it's just me and mom listening, and sometimes I like to think he is too. He died on March 22nd, 2011, was blown up by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Every year on this day, I lock the door to my room and blast this song from the morning until the night when I go to sleep. It helps make me feel like I'm close to him still.
This song is awesome.I lost my Dad to cancer at age of 12 this song reminds me of him.He was a simple man but definitely a family man.I do my best to do same.
One of the greatest songs ever one of my friends , coworker passed Monday and this song best describe this man ... simple man. ( much laughter, many memories) R.I.P. SGT.EVANS......
I lived w/ a roommate who's favorite band was Skynard. I let him listen to this version...not only did he say, "dude I hate to admit, but this version is BETTER than the original," but Shinedown soon became his favorite band afterwards. Brent Smith has the greatest, Truest voice in rock today, I do believe (male anyways).
This was played at my step fathers funeral about 6 months ago. To this day this song gets to me so much. He was such a simple man. He was the only father figure I’ve ever gotten to have in my life for four years and to be ripped from my life..hurts so much. It’s not fair.
This was my mom's favorite song she loved it just as much as she loved me lol so I listen to it everyday to remember her thank you for posting the lyrics.
When I found out I was pregnant with my son, I sang this song to him everyday. Now that he’s here, this is his favourite song. He calms instantly if I sign it or turn it on
The someones up above I think of both of my parents. They never got to meet my sweet baby but i know they watch over us all. Lost my mother at 14 and my father when i was 6 months pregnant at 20. It was and still is the most heartbreaking thing to know that they will never get to hold him and love on him. I just love this song. I sang it when my LO was in my belly and while he feeds or needs to be put down for a nap
I gave this song to my son at age 3 he now has SIMPLEMAN tatooted down his arm as a gift to me. I just sang it for him... he has shirts I've had made... this will forever be our song. Thank You from the bottom of my heart SHINEDOWN
I can remember my mom singing the original version to me as a boy and its become truly fully my way of life and not just a song but my anthem and live the happiest life as a simple man with the love of my life as my wife is truly the one whos been through hell and back with me as i was chasing my dreams and career goals qnd let me know its not all about the money and all the ego i was chasing but honestly life lived fully and happily is about love and the simple good thingsi was missing chasing money power and the fake joy and happiness thank god i found a good southern godly woman who loved me when i was lost and now we tend church together and happy no matter what have or dont in the bank as our home is paid for and we got the utilities covered and plenty of good food on the teble praise the lord
I sung the song to my little boy. My only little boy. My son. He's such a joy precious gem in this world thank you Lord Jesus Christ
Did you feel the need to belt out parts of it, annoyingly, for a duration that would make most people yell SHUT THE FUCK UP lol

Kyle Lowrey thx for your service 😀
Kyle Lowrey Thank you for your service, God Bless
either im just really emotional or this is an emotional but either way, im tearing up
Kyle Lowrey Thank you for your service Sir!
Thank you for your service and RIP to your grandfather sorry to hear
As cute as most of tht is, there is no excuse for animal abuse
No matter how much I like Skynard's version, Shinedown's always hits me. Cry every time. So much emotion is put into his voice.
That is not suprising.
fuckall the other comments your username just made my day
Lost my mom this year.
My mom dedicated this song to me and she passed away about a month ago this song brings me to tears
And??
2:49 seriously gives me chills all over no matter how many times I listen to it.

I'm sorry Aj. Keep your head up. Life is rough. We just have to keep fighting till the end.
my mom put me In foster care and I've been here since I was 14 and I'm 16 now so I know how you feel
AJ Madsen I'm sorry to hear that wish the best for you hope everything ends up well
AJ Madsen im sorry
I sang this at a open mic a couple weeks after my uncle committed suicide and dedicated it to him. I miss him so much.
sad
Virtual hugs, I also think it takes alot of effort to do something like that aswell so Props to you
July 20th 2014 my stepfather took his life I know how you feel and this was his favorite song when the original band lynyrd skynyrd did it, this is honestly the best cover of it I've heard
I'm sorry for your loss just remember the Lord is with you
I'm so sorry to hear, my prayers are with you and your family. Bless you hon! 🙏♥️🙏
Gotta love Shinedown
awesomeness72211 me too its heart wrenching but i honestly use this song to help me out when I feel down
My mother beat me endlessly, and my little brother and one day she went to far, he's no longer with me, I witnessed his death at the young age of seven, when I was eleven I had enough and went to the authorities, she's now spending life in prison, this song makes me think of everything I wanted her to be, everything I prayed everyday for, Im now 15 and near graduation, and as soon as I do im enlisting in the Marines and I am going to go lay my life down for this beautiful country I calk home, for everything its done me, I'm ready to proudly stand with my brother in arms and defend her till death undo what life has created
💔
hey, i’m just another random 15 year old in the comments but i’m sorry collin for you loss ... my prayers and love go to you. i’m so very very very sorry ... i couldn’t even imagine what you went through 😭💔 your comment literally has me crying at 2:00am
Sometimes I wonder if shit like this is real. Obviously it can be. But still. Dark. Crazy to think if it is truuuue
This song is ageless! i just want you to know how good this song is, this song gets me in tears everytime I listen to it
As a proud mom of a son ,
This song is so powerful!
It’s all any mom should want for their boy ❤️
It’s all any parent should want for their children.
Too soon.
Man this is by far one of the best songs ever written in any genre💯💯💘💘💘
i have no idea if anyone listens to this song anymore but if you do please take the song to heart. my grandfather passed 2 years and this song was played at his funereal, i have not heard this song before thin but hearing this song described him so perfectly. He really was a simple man who loved god and his family no matter what. i miss him everyday and listing to this song helps, but also makes me cry. cherish your loved ones because you never know when its the last time you see them.
Saw them in Al Assad, Iraq in 2006-2007. Best concert I ever saw !
My Brother passed and my mother was sitting in her room listening to this crying 😢 life is never the same when we lose a loved one
My best wishes thoughts and prayers 🙏 ✌💖😊
This song makes me think of my momma every time I hear it.
Rest in peace Momma

God Bless Your Mamma my dad died in2012 and I'm not over that and now my poor mom is dying so sorry for your loss
girl just broke my heart. I have been listening to this in repeat for about 3 hours now.
Sometimes its best to listen to music when your heart broke

The General 😔
yeah..
over it now (not)
The General 😘 chin up there's gunna be a light of love so brite soon enough 😇
Everyone here has had bad moments in life and that's fine but just remember that one day you'll remember all of the love that was given to you and you'll be happy and I want all of the sad people that are here to know that I love you guys so i want you to pull through
Thank you, I really needed that :)
Beautiful!
Thanks man is good to know someone thinking of us
Thank you
Thanks
Best version ever by Shinedown!
From the time that I was pregnant with my son, I sang this to him every single night along with your song by Elton John and I'm still singing it to this day. This song is empowering and I want my son to know that the sky is the limit and there will be ups and downs. However, there's a solution to every problem. I want him to know that I am here for him always and will have his back forever. If not standing beside him. I'll be behind him or beside him or in front of him. God bless🙏
Our children are a privilege, not a luxury 🕊️🕊️🌹🌹❤️❤️🙏💯
This was played at my son's funeral service 10 months ago. Today is the first time I've listened to it since that day. Heartbroken 😭
I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure your son is at peace and loves you. You two will meet again one day may Jesus bless you and comfort you ✝️
I’m so sorry.. may your son rest in peace
My mom passed away this morning and I was the one that found her and called the ambulance. She battled alcoholism and I think she tried to quit on her own. She refused to go the hospital. I think she gave up on life.
Good night, mom. I love you forever.
Can I ask what happened I battle with the same disease. I'm sorry for your loss
So sorry, bro. My heart goes out to you
Jess Blaire We don’t know much since we didn’t do an autopsy, but we believe she had cirrhosis of the liver. She was so sick and no one knew until it was too late.

Im sorry. For the loss of your mother and for being the one to find her. I can only imagine how much that hurt.
The first time I heard this, my parents played it in the car, and they belted it out. It was so amazing to see them so happy.
I miss how long songs used to be. There are so many songs now a days where i wish they were just a little longer. I didn’t want this song to end!
Skynard is an autocorrect for most of these people who comment Skynrd use iPhones iPods Galaxy ETC and autocorrect corrects Skynrd into Skynard

This song makes me think of my mother who lost her battle to cancer last November. Love you mama. See you when we meet again.
And now we all know where he is living like a true angel should
my mom always showed me this song. ever since i was little i wanted to see it live soooo bad. a couple weeks ago my wish came true i saw shinedown cover it at jiffy lube live. they KILLED it such an important song
to me
Wow
Lost both my parents by the age of 21, within 2 years of each other... some of my best memories would be sitting at the kitchen table with my dad cranking some tunes rocking out, then a song like this comes on, and we would get in our feelings... I love you old man, having a beer for you at the skynrd concert on the 19th buddy
Rest in peace Jennifer we love and miss you everyday . My auntie was one of a kind . She loved this band and this song . Thank u shinedown for this !
No tragic backstory to go with it, just want to say how much I love this song and how it has a special place in my heart. They nailed it, best cover ever IMO.
I'm literally in tears.... Such power... I love you Shinedown

It's very very very rare that I will comment on youtube. But same bro, same.
I never thought anyone could record this classic song this well. Showdown keeps the songs originality, yet they also make it their song....Great Song and a stellar performance!! Rock on Showdown
So sorry SHINEDOWN! MY mistake.
This man killed it! Best version ive heard. Brought tears to my eyes
Haven't heard this one in a while. Wow! What vocals!
My uncle tony had this song played at his funeral. I absolutely love shinedown and this cover came up and now I'm crying...i miss him so much
I lost an Uncle Tony too and they played sound of silence live, this song was on during the reception though
2 years ago I let my big bro hear this song he loved it. RIP big bro🙏🏽
this is pretty good cover, grew up on the original, and saw them many times live, they put on one hell of a show
Skynyrd is one of my all time favorites and simple man was my step dads favorite song he took his life in 2014 and its one of those songs you never forget the lyrics to
I remember sitting in the living room with my family. A family friend would play piano and guitar. He inspired me to take on his mantle in music. I've been in music since 5th grade. I love this song as it reminds of him.
My great grandmother sang this to me, so did my dad. She’s gone now and I’m learning guitar for this song so I can sing it for her.
OMFG IVE LOVED THIS SONG EVER SINCE I WAS 2!! IVE LOVED IT EVER SINCE AND ALWAYS WILL!!
My dad played this when we sat outside watching a campfire and listening to music at a summer night. Those are some times i will never forget
When I have a son I will sing this at his wedding. If not I'll record just in case I die but that's a promise.
The world needs more men.
One of the greatest songs ever one of my friends , coworker passed Monday and this song best describe this man ... simple man. ( much laughter, many memories) R.I.P. SGT.EVANS......
Hey has finished the fight and fought for his home his service is done he can come home job well done
I'm not usually a fan of covers, but this version is absolutely incredible!
I think this is one of the Best remakes. Shinedown kills it. Thier original music speaks to me. One of the best newer bands. Period
So delicate and simple. It doesn't smack you in the head with a lot of over the top instrumentals.
I dedicate this to my only son. He's beautiful and fighting covid. He was raised properly. He is saved by the his SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. ❤🤟🙏
Wishing him the best
My son David is being deployed to Afghanistan tonight and this is his song and he just sent it to me😭

He calms instantly if I sign it or turn it on
My son too. Any time he gets fussy he instantly stops to listen or falls right to sleep❤
Aweeee! My 2 yr old is the same way!! 🥺 Ever since he was born
I LOVE this MORE than the original cause of how Brent’s voice sounds!! He put his heart on this cover!!
This is one of the best songs ever, lyrically and musically... it makes my hair stand up and downright wantTo cry at how deep it is
The best version ever...right on!!
