One of my favorites!! The stairs to climb are actually behind the screen (it is very flexible, like a sheet) and he has to push the screen with his body to go up the steps behind the screen, so he REALLY needs to know where exactly every step is, from memory, to do this. If I remember correctly, he fell during a rehearsal, doing one of the jumps, but he did great the actual day of the show. He finished 3rd, but he won the public vote (so he was number one for the public)
Other thing to mention - Australia won Jury vote that year. But both Russia and Australia had contrasting scores for Jury/Public, which made them gain less points than Ukraine, who did pretty much second best in both Jury and the Public, ultimately giving them the win. And to be fair - 1944 was the correct song to go with that year. Sergey's song was kinda bad, majority of the score really coming from the overblown staging (which thank God we are over that era) and Public unfortunately wouldn't have Australia win pretty much right after they joined. Sound of Silence was still my favourite, but it was also kinda a shallow song.
With regards to your question about stage design, LED and lightning: the host broadcaster is responsible for the physical stage design and which lights are to be used and stuff. Each artist is from a different country and is supported by their own national broadcaster. Each national broadcaster is responsible for everything from their artist's performance: the host broadcaster will provide them with schematics (i.e. size of the LED wall and floor) so the national broadcaster can design whatever needs to be shown on the LED screens. They will tell the host broadcaster what to do with lightning. The national broadcaster even determines camera movements, fireworks and pyro technics stuff and the host broadcaster will make it happen. It depends on the national broadcaster's budget (they'll have to pay for fireworks and stuff but also man hours for the host broadcaster's light technicians, for example). Each artist can have props on stage. Between songs there are 1 minute postcards to introduce next artist. That's when the host broadcaster quickly changes everything on the set. ESC is like a military operation: planned for every single second.
The host have the LED screens available for anyone and program them differently for different entries. Also if your delegation brings props for your entry, you have to make it available to all other delegations. Sweden brought a wind machine one year that was very popular with other delegations.
The quality of the camera work (and the contest overall) varies a lot depending on who hosts it. This performance was in Eurovision in Stockholm 2016. The year before, it was in Vienna Austria, and the camera work was bad. In the winning performance (by Sweden), you can see the cameraman by accident several times. You see him running for his life with the camera. Kind of embarrassing but mostly just hilarious. The performance I'm talking about is "Heroes" by Måns Zelmerlöw, from the grand final 2015.
Haha, your faces! This was everyones face back in 2016! He brought choreography and vocals to a performance that was pulled off superbly! Russia really had some creative ideas with their performances. This one was inspired by the winner from the previous year....Swedens Måns Zelmerlöw with 'Heroes', but they took it beyond anything that Måns did. Unreal. In the rehearsals, i remember he fell off the back of the wall and was taken to hospital, but he was okay and delivered an amazing performance at the ESC finals. He was beaten to the punch by both Ukraines Jamala, and Australian Dami Im (who delivered one of the best vocals of any Eurovision performance!). If you havent reacted to Dami Im, please react to her performance....her vocals are stratospheric!
The winner in 2015 was Måns Zelmerlöw with the song "Heroes". His performance was new:ish for Eurovision (but not new in the world of music video and staging) and after winning it was inevitable that a fair number of performances would lean into the same type of music. I can really recommend having a look at Måns performance, then think back to this performance, and see the similarities.
I LOVE your Eurovision reactions guys! You should definitely do a live reaction to this years contest please! I’d love to see you watching the entire thing for the first time!
This is arguably the greatest Eurovision staging of all time, especially when considering execution. Just outstanding work from Sergey Lazarev, the consummate performer.
Something else you need to keep in mind watching these performances is the beer, wine, whisky or vodka which by law we all have to consume in Europe from at least 30 minutes before the start of the show, local time. It can make all the difference. Our party got *very* excited by Sergei that year...
😂 Good point! And God forbid you put taking shots of alcohol in your ESC drinking game every time someone says "Thank you Europe". Everyone is under the table by the time they announce the results😂
If you are going to cointinue down the eurovision road here are some of my personal favourites: 1- fairytale by alexander rybak 2- fuego by eleni foureira 3- arcade by duncan 4- Saudade by maro 5- soldli by mahmood
Cameras in eurovision are super important. If you want to see a good example of how just the camera angles play a huge role in the live performance watch the Swedish entry for Eurovision 2018, the song is called dance you off.
Here’s my list of suggestions for your next Eurovision week - the 1990s at Eurovision! Some context for the 90s at esc - all music was done by live orchestra and up until 1999 the representatives from each country had to sing in one of their official languages. I’ve put the English titles in brackets in my list. 1. Dinle (listen) - turkey 1997 - 3rd place 2. Ooh aah, just a little bit - uk 1996 - 8th place 3. Hajde da ludujemo (let’s go crazy) - Yugoslavia 1990 - 7th place 4. Vuelve conmigo (come back to me) - Spain 1995 - 2nd place 5. Mama Corsica - France 1993 - 4th place I hope you enjoy some of the oldies of Eurovision, 90s is one of my favourite decades of esc
With the stage, you're right, it's set and that doesn't change but the acts can dress it how they see fit for the performance and pick what goes on the screens and what lights to use. In the last few years, stages have become a lot more adaptable with moving LED walls, so they can be configured differently for different acts or rotate to just have a wall of lights. Liverpool IMO probably made the most of the adaptability of the stage, resetting multiple times through the performances sometimes. Israel 2019 also made good use of this as well. I can't remember other years off the top of my head...
Fokas Evaggelinos is one of the best scenic artists. He was the person in charge for the Russia's scenery that year and many countries trust him for the Eurovision performances. This year he is in charge of his hometown entry, Greece.
Bro, y'all gotta get more legends on the channel frfr. I have a few in mind but for right now, you definitely should give the Queen of Hip Hop & Soul, Mary J. Blige her flowers. So I have some songs/videos you should check out in particular. All That I Can Say, Deep Inside, No More Drama, Enough Cryin, Take Me As I Am, The One, We Got Hood Love, Someone To Love Me, Mr Wrong, Right Now, Whole Damn Year, Come See About Me. All dope frfr..
2016 was legendary. Legendary stage, legendary performances, legendary hosting by Måns and Petra. You should definitely check out "Love Love Peace Peace" and the other interval performances. Not to mention the winning performance "1944" by Jamala.
Any other year this performance would have won by a landslide, and it nearly did in some areas, if not for 2 factors: 1. People were FURIOUS with Russia for invading Crimea, and the Ukrainian entrant sending a song about past Russian atrocities drew a lot of sympathy (and votes away from Sergey) 2. Dami Im of Australia showing up with possibly one of the most flawless vocal performances the competition has ever seen. She came 2nd, bumping this song down to 3rd.
Eurovision 2021 has some awesome behind the scene videos on YT. You can see the stage being built, changing the staging between the countries and the creating of the augumented reality.
The producing TV-company builds a stage and have experts who in collaboration with each competing entry designs a stage show. You can bring your own stuff but there are limits. For example you have only allowed to hang a limited weight from the ceiling. And all countries aren't as skilled in the art of producing and filming and ESC show. This it is in Sweden, so it is going to be good! The stage is a bit different than it is usally so it's gonna be interesting. But I trust SVTs skills!

This song was also part of the most politically charged final in the history of Eurovision!!! Thunder and lightning!! This was the year after the Russian invasion of Chrimea and Ukraine send a song about the Russian invasion of Chrimea, but the one that happened in 1944. (Song was called 1944) It ended up being Russia and Ukraine in the top two and because of new voting rules it was impossible to know who had won until the very final score was revealed. Ukrain ended up beating Russia and the intesity of that moment was unmatched anywhere! This is why i LOOOOVE Eurovision so much. Its so silly so fun and so political at the same time! One of these days it will bring world peace, mark my words. 🎉🥳🩷🩵💫🤩😂
1944 was a tragical story of Jamala’s family during deportation of crimean tatars in 1944 when there was a huge battle between USSR and Germany, not “the invasion”, because by that year Crimea was a part of Russian Soviet Republic, and was transferred to Ukrainian Soviet Republic only 10 years later. If you want to share any story, check the facts first
This is inspired by the previous year's winner Heroes by Måns Zelmerlöw which used Video walls interactively successfully. The problem for this song was that Russian aggression against Ukraine and its occupation of the Crimea two years earlier left bad feelings towards Russia and sympathy for Ukraine who won this competition.
OMG this song is soooo cheesy. Never got the hype. Guess it ended up in 3rd place, because of the visuals and I bet this is why this song got suggested to you (because you like video clips and this is completely like a video performed live). Sergej came back some years later and also finished in 3rd place, but with a much better song, IMHO.
Regarding you "technical" comments. Eurovision on is first and foremost a telvision show produced for television. And let me tell you that EVERY camera action and interaction is highly rehersed and planned. Many of the graphics and effects the audience do not actually see as we do home infront of the TV. As an audience you see a lot of moving cameras and crew running around on stage hidden from the television viewers:)
Please view these great ESC performances- I haven’t found them on your page yet, they are worth the time :) 1. Australia: Zero Gravity (Kate Miller) see the Grand final 2. Moldova: Run away (Sunstroke Project) 3. Moldova: Soarele si luna (Pasha Parfeni)

The thing about eurovision it is the world biggest tv-production. It is not a concert. The amount og production to put on a tv-show is no where to be found on the planet. There is sooooo much going on beond what u see in the tv-show. Just amigane they have 55 seconds to change alle the fictures on stage between every act! Every camera angles, lighning etc...
all this is cool, but after many years I don’t understand how a show overloaded with special effects is connected with the meaning of the song? Why these wings, why these squatting figures and raised arms? It seems that Sergey Lazarev wanted, in addition to a very good song, to attract attention and voices with a separate production. But there is no connection between them and it was a fatal mistake, it seems to me
@@scorpioninpink No it flopped with the juries because many of them voted politically that year due to Russia's invasion of Crimea. You cannot tell me in any other year half the juries would give this song 0 points.
@@scorpioninpink Even if you think the song was average, it wouldn't have received absolutely zero points from half the jury if it wasn't for the political landscape that year. And that I am totally sure of
For 2016 this was amazing 🤩 even though we’ve seen crazier things since. Russia always brought all these great, surprising performances with things we hadn’t seen before.
Even though I don't want Russia back in ESC until they respect Ukraine (the whole of Ukraine) as a sovereign nation and while they still have Putin and his likes in power, when I see some of their past entries I kinda miss the vibe they had some years. Like Sergei Lazarev was really good and always so over the top dramatic in a good way!
Unfortunately one of those entries, that paved the way to impress the audience mainly by an overwhelming staging instead of an overwhelming song. I mostly felt uncomfortable watching him, especially when he was climbing through this kind of obstacle course in a rather strained manner. And all these visuals didn’t elevate his song for me, I just found it dull and cheesy.
Eurovision was one those arenas we hoped we could be a bridge to russia, but the war in Ukraine has ensured that they'll be out of Eurovision for a long time. At least as long as putin is the emperor of russia.
It's pretty sad when Russia sends a really good song ... but they literally cannot win because they're russia and ultimately no one wants eurovision to take place there xD
"maybe it's just a camera turn because this doesn't make any sense"
narrator: it was in fact not a camera turn
It is a camera turn.
Actually I think you're right@@J1mmyMack
It's been like 8 years and I still really don't know how they managed to do this staging it was flawless
tilted "wall" with a fabrick over it and projectors. some parts of wall are moved towards for him to step on.
at a repetition he fell off once
Same..
the wall has fabric that's stretchy (so that its straight when he's not on it) and some grooves behind for him to stand on
there's videos from the audience showing how it's done
One of my favorites!! The stairs to climb are actually behind the screen (it is very flexible, like a sheet) and he has to push the screen with his body to go up the steps behind the screen, so he REALLY needs to know where exactly every step is, from memory, to do this. You can find some rehearsal videos and stuff of this, it's an amazing setup.
I didn’t know about the stairs behind? I thought it was textured screening.
@@thelawgreens no, it’s steps behind a stretched fabric, the stretched fabric has the screen projected onto it.
Yesss I remember he had some incident
Other thing to mention - Australia won Jury vote that year. The host have the LED screens available for anyone and program them differently for different entries. Also if your delegation brings props for your entry, you have to make it available to all other delegations. Sweden brought a wind machine one year that was very popular with other delegations.
And they have to be able to create the stagings in like 90 seconds (in between performances), except sweden always gets extension to this 😅
What is the year of the wind machine? I can't remember
@@thassferbat Carola had a wind machine both in 1991 and 2006.
@@leenahai that's 40 seconds, not 90. And there are always a few who go over that, and that's why we have green room breaks.

If you want to share any story, check the facts first
This was huge at that time but I think Australia 2019 remains as the most incredible stating to this day.
This is inspired by the previous year's winner
Heroes by Måns Zelmerlöw
which used Video walls interactively successfully.
The problem for this song was that Russian aggression
against Ukraine and its occupation of the Crimea
two years earlier
left bad feelings towards Russia
and sympathy for Ukraine who won this competition.
But still, he won televoting, and even Ukrainian viewers gave him 12 points
OMG this song is soooo cheesy. Never got the hype. Guess it ended up in 3rd place, because of the visuals and I bet this is why this song got suggested to you (because you like video clips and this is completely like a video performed live). Sergej came back some years later and also finished in 3rd place, but with a much better song, IMHO.
I was so glad it lost.
I'm sorry but we need Russia back in Eurovision
@CTSimp I'm not really sorry 👍
We are against.

2. Moldova: Run away (Sunstroke Project)
3. Moldova: Soarele si luna (Pasha Parfeni)

Honestly wish Putin would sod off now because Russia brought some fantastic acts to Eurovision.

he imitated måns zelmerlöw, who won the year before this.
This is why I was so glad he didn't win.
Lol it’s more like Beyoncé’s “Run the world” live performance in 2011. And Sergei was really good, face it
this year's best song is hurricane representing Israel
mans zelmerlow - heroes :)
Russia 2016: one of the best third places in the history of the Contest. In any other year, he probably would have won by a country mile.
The song is fairly trashy and cheesy, but the staging is obviously very impressive and he has an excellent technical voice.
Guys, you have to react to Eurovision 2024
Please, watch the Winner of 2016 - Jamala - 1944) This is such a phenomenal introduction)
I think Sergey Lazarev - Scream perform is better than this
Better song maybe, but this is the best staging from any ESC performance, ever.
@@phuealI allow myself to disagree on your last statement;-)
@@svenoest What do you think challenges it? I’d be glad to watch that!
Don’t do reactions of Russia, there r not in contests anymore!
So are Turkey, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco and etc
@@GlebLudnikov depends on reason, why they r not contestants…
all this is cool, but after many years I don’t understand how a show overloaded with special effects is connected with the meaning of the song? Why these wings, why these squatting figures and raised arms? It seems that Sergey Lazarev wanted, in addition to a very good song, to attract attention and voices with a separate production. But there is no connection between them and it was a fatal mistake, it seems to me
That's why it flopped with the juries.
@@scorpioninpink No it flopped with the juries because many of them voted politically that year due to Russia's invasion of Crimea. You cannot tell me in any other year half the juries would give this song 0 points.
@@sav0001 It's a mid song and it deservedly flopped with the juries.
@@scorpioninpink Even if you think the song was average, it wouldn't have received absolutely zero points from half the jury if it wasn't for the political landscape that year. And that I am totally sure of
I fail to see the appeal of this entry; it seems rather average to me.
For 2016 this was amazing 🤩 even though we’ve seen crazier things since. Russia always brought all these great, surprising performances with things we hadn’t seen before.
@@07012969 well, IMHO it may have been considered average in 2016, but by today's standards, it's simply garbage.
@@DavidiTsiramua Not really, the staging of this entry is still great to this day
Even though I don't want Russia back in ESC until they respect Ukraine (the whole of Ukraine) as a sovereign nation and while they still have Putin and his likes in power, when I see some of their past entries I kinda miss the vibe they had some years. Like Sergei Lazarev was really good and always so over the top dramatic in a good way!
THIS SHOULD BE THE WINNER... NOT UKRAINE BECAUSE OF THE FOOKING POLITICS!!!
