I think fact that they travel fair bit, but most importantly live in London gives them an huge edge. Overall, if you live in London or NY, you are just going to encounter huge number of nationalities if you are bit social. I don't have personal experience, but London might even be bit more diverse just because it's in Europe, thus closer to Europe mainland, Asia and Africa.

It's not until last 10 years or so with more influence from the internet and US etc do East Asians get called Asian now in the UK. In the UK is flipped around. When you are asked to fill in a form to say what ethnicity you are it catgorises Asian as one and Chinese as one. China is part of Asia :S P.S. My best mate is Bangladeshi :)

It's cos there's a bunch of gurungs in UK tbh, he probs went to school with some Nepalis that have the surname Gurung let's be real.
But his perception is a bit flawed he thinks Gurung is like the Smith of Nepali languages and acting like so many ppl have it. Gurungs r 2-3% of Nepali population and not all gurungs have that surname. I assume the only Nepalis he knows r gurungs so that's y he thought that.
