The Princess of Wales’ speech at the Shaping Us National Symposium

- “If we can create a society which sees the child within every adult - and the adult within every child - we will finally start to change it for the better."
We want to make the link between the skills we develop in early childhood and the core foundations that set us up for life and help us to thrive as adults. To help give social and emotional skills the greater priority they deserve, The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood has conducted a first-of-its-kind global listening exercise, involving experts from 21 countries around the world, to catalogue and identify the skills in this area that matter most throughout our lives.
The Centre for Early Childhood has undertaken work to find a common bridge and set of core skills that can apply equally to children and adults, so we can bring people together with a common language and vision to drive action at every level - protecting and strengthening these skills for current and future generations across the whole of society.
Through this exercise we found consensus around a set of skills that we develop and nurture during early childhood, but that continue to be enhanced and refined as we grow into adults. They relate to knowing ourselves, managing our emotions, focusing our thoughts, communicating with others, nurturing our relationships, and exploring the world. These are the skills that lay the foundations for our positive future mental health and resilience throughout our lives.
Healthy development of these core skills is not inevitable - they must be nurtured from our earliest moments of life. The foundations for these skills are laid in early childhood, between pregnancy and the age of five, which is why those earliest years represent such a golden opportunity to make a difference right from the start. But our social and emotional growth continues throughout our lifetime, and change is always possible.

I have never lost sight of Catherine since the day she wed Prince William. After all these years, I couldn't be more proud of her.
Her stoicism, far sightedness, emotional intelligence, maturity, and unwavering focus on her family, projects and work is remarkable.
She is a testament that good work is more about character than talent.
Also, her willingness to work on her weaknesses, her capability of being a team player knowing when to shine and when to let others shine, is so inspiring.
She is so supportive of her in laws without judgement. No wonder she is King Charles' "beloved daughter in law."

First of all, I would like to congratulate the Princess for her public speaking. It has developed in leaps and bounds. Second and most importantly, thank you for shining a light on early childhood. As an early years educator for decades I have witnessed how the formative years can shape the personality of future adults. Childhood has changed in this fast frenetic world. Keep investing in humankind.
Bless her heart. She was truly a poor, nervous, self-conscious speaker when she first married William. Im sure speaking in public doesn't come naturally to her and yet a decade later she is doing really well. Good for her.

She is brave , and she is so right, so many people dont really listen to their kids.
The way and pressures we now all live under, it's easy to get things wrong. Families don't stay in the same area's. Two incomes is a must. We're all so fast paced, no time to just be. Critical thinking skills aren't taught in most schools, and being academic is everything. Babies and little children see the world with wonder, needlessly curious about everything. Adults need to stop and stare and just breathe.

My granddaughter lives in a small seaside town where wages are mostly minimal or seasonal but when she got engaged to her (now) husband they discussed having children and the importance of being there with them in the early pre-school years and both agreed that though it would mean not having holidays, waiting until they could afford a car, and budgeting very carefully with necessities coming before the latest wants that was what they wanted as parents. They are now blessed with 4 planned children ranging from 16 years old next month to 2 years old on new years day, own their own house (mortgage), have children who have learned the joys of walking through woods and identifying bird songs to sitting on the beach watching the sunset. They still only have the one car and are one of the happiest families I know. It can be done and it's important for the children's development.
I worked, but still found time to read them a story every night, and we always sat down at a table to eat and talk about our day.

I am Attempting teach our staff about substance and alcohol abuse. I am sending this video for the staff to watch . So that they can understand how it would have begun..and not to judge because our patients were children the missed all the ingredients they needed to have a future.
