Jerry Rosa, arthritic hands, but still a mind sharp as a tack, I've done lots of desktops and laptops, but laptops at 80 years of age are tough. Good going, kind grandpa.
Good job on that screen! Lots of tutorials with people using heat guns or hotplates to loosen those damn adhesives... Those I don't have, but three weeks ago I replaced the screen of a smartphone with just two pots on the oven and a cooking thermometer. I set a double boiler, with boiling water in the first pot, and put the other pot in the bath with some cooking paper in the bottom. Then I just set the fire low and maintained the water at 80°C with the thermometer and let the phone rest for 5 min there. After that, I used a guitar pick and the other tools that were packed with the replacement screen. There was also a cheap little suction plug to help unstick the screen and the back of the phone.
One of the cell phones I have owned over the years was a Blackberry Z10 (nice phone but shitty battery life). I had it apart to replace the screen. Incredibly tiny ribbon cable attached to Incredible tiny connectors. Really incredible engineering inside these things. I recommend everyone take apart an old dead phone just to see what's there. Maybe make it a project with your grandkids. Tell them that it's okay if you know you don't want the phone anymore and it's out of warranty. It's an excellent learning opportunity for everyone. This is how many inventors got started, they took apart existing equipment to see what is inside.
Wow HP Envy -- that is a fairly high-end laptop and it's probably fairly new? I bought one about 2 months ago. Isn't it still under warranty? Whatever that was an impressive repair!!
