It's about China street scene around 1912. Shot by Albert Kahn.

I am adamant at 7:04 I heard a man complain what the purpose was recording was for and that someone was in the way. This was very similar to modern day Cantonese.

One of the things that I find fascinating while watching old videos is the lack of talking especially if it's in the late 1890's or early 1900s. I observe people's mouth and very rarely do they talk. It's mostly non verbal communication. I don't really know what to make of it yet, just fascinated by it.
I wonder whether people living in the future after 100 years will see us the same way. To them, are we just some random silent segments of films lost in the long course of history.
Now we have much better audio and image quality. They will see all the vlogs, etc made today

It’s really eye opening to see what life was really like in Qing dynasty, unlike those things that are depicted in modern historical dramas. Really glad that this video exists and captures moments we will never get to experience in the modern world now.
The video filmed the late Qing. The early Qing was quite prosperous.

This was recorded in 1912. By that China had suffered a lot of wars that devastated the country.
The Taiping rebellion alone killed around 20 million. Compare to the American Civil war that took place around the same time that killed around 500,000.
And the Taiping rebellion was just one example. There were also natural disasters such as flooding and failed harvests.
Those Qing TV dramas usually portrayed the golden age of the Dynasty.

7:04 It is Jinan in Shandong. Someone in China has figure it out by the Gate. The Gate name is "泺源门”（濼源门LuoyuanMen）. The gate has gone today but the street is still there, and called "泺源大街”LuoyuanDajie.

As a westerner, I just realize Qing is the barbarian that colonize China after they defeat the Ming. They also get ride of their ally, a Korea dynasty call Joseon.

Yes. After they saw the fall of Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China, they would see the World War II and the Second Sino-Japanese War. Then the China Civil War and then the establishment of the People's Republic of China and would go through the Great Chinese Famine in the '60s and some of them who were lucky enough would go through the Chinese Economic Reform in the '80s.
Yes, my great grandma (1917-2013) saw a lot of these even though she stays on Hainan island (part of Guangdong/Canton Province until 1988), not on real mainland china most of the time

Jinan is my hometown and it’s crazy to know that this film was taken place in the city I was born in and grew up in. I wonder if any of these people were my ancestors, or if they’re distant relatives of people I knew - or even relatives of people I briefly passed by on the streets of Jinan. Great work!!

we all came from peasants and beggars. My family in the 1920s were farmers, miners and even sheep stealers ha! Wish we could bring them to the future so they could experience the luxurious life we have now, because of their sacrifices I think they deserve it.

You also had the gentry who owned land, the merchants, and the scholar gentry, who lived pretty comfortably. Ch'ing Dynasty China was beset with many problems, not the least were devasting wars, especially during the 19th century which not only weakened China, but made, what was once an affluent country, into a poor, backward nation.

I like watching these videos to see what it was like for my distant anscentors. I long for connection to my Chinese and Vietnamese heritage. Thank you for sharing these videos.

Qing Dynasty never care for those, the major thing that was forced on the people here, male specifically is the haircut, those are not Chinese haircut but Manchurian (Closer to Mongol than Han Chinese), actual Chinese that truly ruled the realm was Ming Dynasty, the one before Qing.

I like how they start looking where the camera's looking. That innate human instinct to notice what is being looked at by someone else because it's probably important.
Dont forget that a caucasian/canadian(perhaps anglo or french) is holding the camera and recording. And considerin the time line, the mere presence of someone so far removed to both looks and race mingling around and doing god knows what really does draw attention.

When I watched this video, couldn’t help but made me sad to think that’s the lifestyle my great grandparents had endured. My grandparents left China in the 1920s to find a better life and I am glad. I wouldn’t have the life I have now in the U.S if it weren’t for them. My grandparents told me life was tough, but I didn’t know it was this tough as shown in the video. Makes me love them even more. Thanks for sharing.

The cylinders holding the lenses had diameters equivalent to that of an oil drum. That was why it attracted onlookers and crowd. They already had telescopic lens, like tele tessar, planar and distagon. They had also invented the ocular view finders. Their camera equipment can be compared to Hasselblad, Rollei, Carl Zeiss, Volklander, Leica and Agfa of Germany. There were no Japanese camera during those period.

可不可以把背景音乐去掉发一个，我在4-5分钟的地方听到说的是广东话，而且好像有听到说地名，但是听不太清楚。这个广东话应该是广州，东莞，珠海，中山，香港，澳门，佛山附近一带的。如果按照这个集市的规模，个人倾向于广州或佛山。不过还是希望可以更完整听到里面的对话，有可能可以确定的了。

Life back then physically challenging, today in form of mental and emotions. As we cant imagine how to survive on that era, is the same as them living in our fast paced,rat race, capitalism life.
They would've complained about it too. They also would have gotten obese off fast food like we have.
Vietnam today in suburban and rural areas are like this still. We get water from dug wells because there's no plumbing. Streets are not paved and are dirty and muddy. Banana trees and vegetation are overgrown. Internet is expensive. It's honestly painful to see people in western countries complaining about 2020. I mean yea, it's boring. But you're staying inside your house with A/C and plumbing doing nothing. And you get to wave your hand around on Tik Tok. That's a luxury.

Coloring may give the viewer the wrong impression. Wall color, tile color, clothes color, etc. may vary depending on your status. It is not good to paint without such basic knowledge. Photographs of this era have a strong sensitivity to blue, so everyone's face looks darker than it really is. Coloring makes it difficult for researchers to determine the original color.
