Four years ago I was a passenger in a car heading northbound on Hwy 880 approaching Oakland when the passenger in the car in front of me began shooting at a car behind me. It was a Sunday afternoon. I could see the flash from the gun and I remember being both angry and perplexed.
For some reason I did not duck. (probably because I had just returned to Oakland after living abroad in a land where stabbings accounted for most of the violent assaults and homicides).
It was o. thist particular I began to digest how lawlessness and freeway shootings have become a common occurrence in the Bay.
My heart goes out to the young and innocent and their families who were victimized by these lawless sociopaths. 🙏🏾

What’s even more insane is this police department is currently implementing usage of military equipment and policies. This community would be better off with no police when the only other option is militant police who already have a history of bad decisions, excessive force, awarding medals and accommodations to officers who clearly aren’t worthy, and simply have a culture of working against the community vs. with it.
This department is all of the bad apples on crack. DOJ needs to be more effective in their oversight and community leaders should be invited in for say in the oversight as well.

Driving while tired is very dangerous. Pulling over and grabbing a nap is a reasonable activity. Now I don’t know if that’s what happened, but neither did the police and they had no reason to assume otherwise.

Here’s what is supposed to happen: An officer at a scene is only to begin firing if he reasonably perceives an immediate threat of death or great bodily harm. He can't fire because another officer, or even 10 other officers fire. He has to witness the threat himself.
Once an officer begins firing, he is generally to continue firing until he perceives what a reasonable person would consider to be an end to the threat, such as the person surrendering, dropping the gun, becoming incapacitated, etc. Just as each officer must be able to stand by his own decision to fire based on what he witnessed, his decision to stop is also individual unless someone calls “cease fire".
I've watched hundreds of videos on police shootings. I've seen suspects in cars and out of cars. I've seen officers follow procedure and fail to follow procedure.
I have no opinion on whether each officer who fired personally witnessed what he reasonably perceived to be a severe threat, though being passed out in a car with a gun on your lap on a drive through is going to lead to a very dangerous situation.
As for 55 shots, when the suspect is seated in a car it is often much more difficult to see that the threat has ended. It’s often much harder to see that he has dropped the gun and/or is attempting to surrender, and since he is seated it's often harder to see that he has been incapacitated.
So almost every time an officer involved shootings occurs in which the suspect is seated in a car, expect 7 to 11 shots per officer who fires. That’s almost always what happens. White, Black, Hispanic, it doesn't matter. It isn't about race. Nor is it about “deserved". “Deserved" plays no legal role in the question, because police can't shoot someone just because the cop believes person deserves to be shot.
As amazing as it may seem, when you pass out in a public place with a firearm on your lap, sometimes things turn for the worse, and it actually can be that race has nothing to do with it.
