I was there with my girl. I was insulted for Marley being an opening act. I told my girl Nan he would take over the show and he did, The Commanders were a great band but they never stood a chance. Marley had the audience the moment he took the stage. The audience stood up for Marley and did not sit until he left the stage.I can remember half the audience leaving after Richie's first song. a love song to Dionne Warwick. We must remember during this period the Grenadian Revolution led by Maurice Bishop had pushed the Caribbean to the front of the news in the US. The music of the Grenadian Revolution was Reggae and Marley was a giant in the music. This comment is a little long but I will mention one other outcome. Lionel Ritchie fell in love with the Caribbean sound and you can hear the influence in his work from that point on. Not only did Marley influence fans he influenced artists. This was the greatest concert.
I too was there. After Could You Be Love was played the first time we stood on the seats chanting for Bob to come back on stage. What an experience, I had just arrived in the US on the 15th of Sep 1980 and it was my brother-in-law who got me the ticket. He knew how much I loved Bob and reggae music. It was something I will never forget!

I was there,I never understood how anyone could combine Bob Marley,the commodores and Kurtis blow together,I was amazed at all the beautiful people who attended,first time ever seeing white rastafari whole families with their babies dressed in liberation gowns ,it was a spiritual event watching Bob Marley perform, I, alone with 70% of the audience started leaving after Bob Marley performed, wasn't much else to see ...nuff said .. As a HUGE Marley fan, this video filled a lot of gaps for me. Although this phase of Bob's incredible life isverysadforme, I still appreciate learning details about it. I believe Bob is the single most important artist in human history, but also the most underrated. Many are called, but only a few are chosen. Bob is in both categories.

Other than his children, Stephen and Damian in particular, there are no other Music Artists, that I can think of, with the Pure Spiritual Energy to rival what Bob Marley gave to the world. The difference between Marley and Tosh was that Island Records was able to market Marley to gain more mainstream acceptance than Tosh. Marley was also seen as more palatable and Tosh more radical. Stephen Marley has been the musical producer and engineer behind much of his brothers' music. He's great too. Ziggy's music has largely missed my ears but I'm well aware of his contribution to reggae music for decades.
We will never forget brother Bob, for the positive countribution he made to humanity. I listen to him all the time, and his music is timelesss. Love, peace and blessings to all lovers of reggae music.
As an 18yr old up and coming musician. I was at that concert. I felt both artists kicked ass that night! I didn't feel Bob Marley upstaged the Commodores. I wasn't a Bob Marley fan at that time, but I did love his performance! And of course the Commodores kicked up!
I'm so glad that Bob Marley and the Wailers got to perform before he collapsed in Madison Square Garden. He fulfilled his dream (reach American audience) before he passed. I have become a huge fan of his music. I love the beat and melody but mostly I love and appreciate the lyrics. Always a message in his music. He left a huge legacy. While I was a fan of the Commadores, I can see why Bob Marley dominated the show. 🙂

But after that performance, the CIA was like “Oh no, we definitely have to kill him now!” They did not want US blacks to embrace Bob’s revolutionary songs as that could have potentially destabilized the US. The CIA then “accelerated” Bob’s cancer so that his Uprising Tour, and Bob’s life would come to a premature end.

The first and second time Bob Marley came to Chicago,I was there (Quiet Knight and the Uptown Theatre) Same goose bumps still all over my body. Both concerts awaken the positives of my past. The Marleys became connected to the city as was the city connect to them… Lake Point Tower… Wild Hare Singing Frog Sanctuary, Clark St.
I am a 71 year old ginger WHITE dude and I fell in love with Bob Marley’s music the first time I heard it. Buffalo Soldier, No Woman No Cry, Redemption Song…all masterpieces. Bob Marley’s music transcended silly things like race and religion. It was accessible to all.
I can imagine starting out the set with Natural Mystic 😍 by a well practiced band setting the mood and dominating the hearts and minds in the stadium then hugging everyone at the end with Will You Be Loved. A transcendental experience indeed.

I was there at the Hines Auditorium concert in Boston. Thank you, Danny Sims. You were very kind helping with selling T shirts that night. Bob was great. We chatted later that evening. *His only words Rastafari" He collapsed that night on stage. It was one of the biggest heart breaks of my life ..
And don't forget. This is a Bob Marley who when Drs. examined him days later found more cancer than they had ever seen in one human's body. He had been performing at this level for years. Remarkable.
i was there at MSG, he blew the roof off with slow reggae grooves! opened with natural mistic. when they finished, and the commodores, came on with their white suits and light show, about 1/3 of the audience got up to leave, along with me and my friends!
I was at that concert at MSG! My sister gave me the tickets at the last minute, nose bleed seats, and I arrived when Curtis Blow was doing “These are the Breaks” When Bob came on, the place went wild! There were Rastas dancing in the aisles! The whole set, everyone was dancing! As soon as he finished his set, and the Commodores started theirs, people were leaving in droves..I was blown away! The Commodores set was boring, and I ended up leaving after 4 songs.
Looking back at that era when I came of age, this was not even a fair fight. The Commodores were one of the top Soul/R&B bands yes, but they are barely remembered now, though Lionel Ritchie is one of the best American song writers ever. I had heard about this train wreck for the Commodores, Marley was Brilliant, give him credit......
Yeah, but if you compare any artist Worldwide to Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin... there's no comparison. ... Sure he would campare Marley to the Commodores, there were 100s of R&B Groups in America compared to only a few Raggae acts (at that time) in Jamaica. All of the Attention wasn't spread out to multiple artists in Jamaica because they didn't have as many artists and groups as Black Americans did. Yeah Marley was great but Compared to our Greats, Jamaicans need to pipe down a little.

Though the Commodores were "my boys", but looking back at them like I look at, say Rick James, their skills didn't stand the test of time. Not one Commodores Song or Rick James is part of Americana 50 years later, as opposed to, say, the Temptations, who have about 15 songs everybody sings along to 40-50 years later ("Talkin' Bout MY GIRL" !!!). I was at that show!! I remember that Bob opened that show and the crowd hadn’t had enough when he was through, so they encored him, twice!!! It was stunning to see so many Caucasians in attendance as Bob turned MSG into a tabernacle. The reggae was thick as it was played with a lot of bottom!! The Commodores were good. They introduced their million dollar light show, but that was no match for what Bob delivered. Great show!!!

WBLS was the number 1 Urban station in the country, it had the highest listenership ( millions) Frankie Crocker was the number program director in the world when it came to discovering and breaking new artist, not only Bob Marley to the USA market, but artist like Prince, and so many others. There should be a movie made about Frankie Crocker, so many artists would have not become who they were if it was not for this innovate music pioneer.
The presenter failed to mention that of the 20k people in attendance, after Marley’s performance, there were only perhaps 3k when the commodores took the stage 😂

I was a young baby at the time when he died so I've never got the experience of appreciating him and his music at the time. As I've got older it is a need and want for me to listen and enjoy this legend music, his lyrics, songwriting and singing cannot be compared to any other. Love me some Bob Marley ❤❤
I had the Pleasure to witness Bob Marley's last concert at Pittsburgh's 'Stanley Theater' after seeing UB-40 the same night at club around the corner called 'Heaven'. Why they would book two Reggae acts the same night and practically the same time slot I don't get but it was phenomenal.
@@lowKut Yeah they were out, back then they were considered a new hip underground band, but UB-40 actually were formed in 1978 in Birmingham UK. But Bob Marley has been around ( as a musical artist) since the early 1960's bro.

@@JaemanEdwards I don't know about that, it was 1980 and their first album "Signing Off" was out, you know the one that looks like a British unemployment benefits card ( a UB-40). I bought that album at a record shop in Pittsburgh called 'Jim's Records' they specialized in all the hip new stuff like Punk, New Wave, Jazz and Reggae, a lot of imports too. So I actually think it was the debut album tour. Yeah, 1980. Oh, one cover they did later on ( like you stated) was the Roy Orbison song, that one I really like 😁

Interesting-I was there both night's for that concert. I don't remember it going down like this at all. Bob's fans showed up, The Commodores fans showed up, and Kurtis Blow was also on the bill, his fans showed up too. It was a great 2 nights of music for everyone and Madison Square Garden remained pack for all 3 srtists!

Both bands were rockstars and playing on one of the most esteemed stages, Madison Square Garden! Bob Marley & The Wailers were getting bigger than KISS, yet few get to play there! They certainly were more than qualified! The Commodores I don't get into, no disrespect here though but I call b.s. when Ritchie said he basically had amnesia because of some herb smoke so can't recall much of that night! And to my knowledge he never disparaged White folks but instead focused on uplifting Black folks, and wide open to Asian folks, White folks, & Hispanic folks because it is about Unity, not diversity. Bob had every reason to dislike White people, his father bailed on him like a chump, wouldn't acknowledge him later when he appealed to him for help, and was screwed over by Chris Whiteworse from Island Recs! I'm a White guy and I hate slavery & racism like every other sane & decent person. But I'm not done with disparaging White people or fighting racism with racism as I say. We need to all work together. A man's skin color should be no more significant than the color of his eyes. I probably butchered that lyric, but I believe in Unity still. I remember the lead singer of the greatest English band of all time from UB40 Ali Campbell said Andy's brother they see Bob Marley in 1976 it was the closest thing to a spiritual experience to this day as well. They did this to Sly and the family stone in Las Vegas in the 70s at the old ice skating rink . They were so awsome and the crowd went crazy for Bob and the wailers , sly got mad and kicked them off the tour after the Vegas show ! RRRRRAAASSSTAA FAR -IIIIIII !!!!!!!!

The audience stood up for Marley and did not sit until he left the stage.I can remember half the audience leaving after Richie's first song. a love song to Dionne Warwick. We must remember during this period the Grenadian Revolution led by Maurice Bishop had pushed the Caribbean to the front of the news in the US. The music of the Grenadian Revolution was Reggae and Marley was a giant in the music. This comment is a little long but I will mention one other outcome. Lionel Ritchie fell in love with the Caribbean sound and you can hear the influence in his work from that point on. Not only did Marley influence fans he influenced artists. This was the greatest concert.
Lionel Richie's song "Se la" is very carribean reggae influenced.

I too was there. After Could You Be Love was played the first time we stood on the seats chanting for Bob to come back on stage. What an experience, I had just arrived in the US on the 15th of Sep 1980 and it was my brother-in-law who got me the ticket. He knew how much I loved Bob and reggae music. It was something I will never forget!

As an 18yr old up and coming musician. I was at that concert. I felt both artists kicked ass that night! I didn't feel Bob Marley upstaged the Commodores. I wasn't a Bob Marley fan at that time, but I did love his performance! And of course the Commodores kicked up!

I'm so glad that Bob Marley and the Wailers got to perform before he collapsed in Madison Square Garden. He fulfilled his dream (reach American audience) before he passed. I have become a huge fan of his music. I love the beat and melody but mostly I love and appreciate the lyrics. Always a message in his music. He left a huge legacy. While I was a fan of the Commadores, I can see why Bob Marley dominated the show. 🙂

But after that performance, the CIA was like “Oh no, we definitely have to kill him now!” They did not want US blacks to embrace Bob’s revolutionary songs as that could have potentially destabilized the US. The CIA then “accelerated” Bob’s cancer so that his Uprising Tour, and Bob’s life would come to a premature end.

I was at that concert at MSG! My sister gave me the tickets at the last minute, nose bleed seats, and I arrived when Curtis Blow was doing “These are the Breaks” When Bob came on, the place went wild! There were Rastas dancing in the aisles! The whole set, everyone was dancing! As soon as he finished his set, and the Commodores started theirs, people were leaving in droves..I was blown away! The Commodores set was boring, and I ended up leaving after 4 songs.

Looking back at that era when I came of age, this was not even a fair fight. The Commodores were one of the top Soul/R&B bands yes, but they are barely remembered now, though Lionel Ritchie is one of the best American song writers ever. Yeah, but if you compare any artist Worldwide to Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin... there's no comparison. ... Sure he would campare Marley to the Commodores, there were 100s of R&B Groups in America compared to only a few Raggae acts (at that time) in Jamaica. All of the Attention wasn't spread out to multiple artists in Jamaica because they didn't have as many artists and groups as Black Americans did.

Though the Commodores were "my boys", but looking back at them like I look at, say Rick James, their skills didn't stand the test of time. I considered going to that show especially when I read the reviews the next day. But as a student in Oklahoma dt that time, my finances just didn't add up and I was unable to find someone to share costs with. I still wish I had gone anyway, costs be damned!
I was at that show!! I remember that Bob opened that show and the crowd hadn’t had enough when he was through, so they encored him, twice!!! It was stunning to see so many Caucasians in attendance as Bob turned MSG into a tabernacle. The reggae was thick as it was played with a lot of bottom!!
The Commodores were good. They introduced their million dollar light show, but that was no match for what Bob delivered. Great show!!!

I had the Pleasure to witness Bob Marley's last concert at Pittsburgh's 'Stanley Theater' after seeing UB-40 the same night at club around the corner called 'Heaven'. Why they would book two Reggae acts the same night and practically the same time slot I don't get but it was phenomenal.

I bought that album at a record shop in Pittsburgh called 'Jim's Records' they specialized in all the hip new stuff like Punk, New Wave, Jazz and Reggae, a lot of imports too. So I actually think it was the debut album tour. Yeah, 1980. Oh, one cover they did later on ( like you stated) was the Roy Orbison song, that one I really like 😁

Very clear & with a great sense of sarcasm & humor. You put it into perspective as well as, or better than a book. I can imagine Bob & the band were big fans of the Commodores and there was a friendly competition going. Both bands were rockstars and playing on one of the most esteemed stages, Madison Square Garden! Bob Marley & The Wailers were getting bigger than KISS, yet few get to play there! They certainly were more than qualified! The Commodores I don't get into, no disrespect here though but I call b.s. when Ritchie said he basically had amnesia because of some herb smoke so can't recall much of that night! They got upstaged in the biggest arena by Natty Dreads from Jamaica. He didn't want to have to relive it. Most rock stars have an ego, though I know Bob was more humble than the rest. He obviously believed in God & loved his family, didn't use hard drugs, called for non-violence, and believed in hard work. helped out hundreds of people who might not have had a meal that night back home. I've read many biographies and they basically had to keep cash on hand at Tuff Gong to give to people who came by in need. And to my knowledge he never disparaged White folks but instead focused on uplifting Black folks, and wide open to Asian folks, White folks, & Hispanic folks because it is about Unity, not diversity. Bob had every reason to dislike White people, his father bailed on him like a chump, wouldn't acknowledge him later when he appealed to him for help, and was screwed over by Chris Whiteworse from Island Recs! I'm a White guy and I hate slavery & racism like every other sane & decent person. But I'm not done with disparaging White people or fighting racism with racism as I say. We need to all work together. A man's skin color should be no more significant than the color of his eyes. I probably butchered that lyric, but I believe in Unity still. Bob, Bunny, and even Peter didn't carry any hate in their hearts, only love for Black people and ultimately all people. Peter was very spicy for the time though! Timid by today's standards. I read Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey, they don't even take unnecessary jabs at the White man, speaking the truth but not in a mean-spirited way, always with couth. I also read Booker T. Washington and am constantly amazed at the kindness he showed just a couple decades after slavery was abolished here! I'm ashamed of some of the shit my ancestors may have done but it's not fair to put that stain on my soul, I'm as repulsed as you. Bob Marley is the Uniter! And despite his father abdicating his duties, Bob Marley grew up to be infinitely more successful & impactful than his father ever was! Bob took the opposite approach with his kids and nurtured them like a real man does. He was a millionaire and he fed people in Jamaica, literally, while KISS and the Rolling Stones were snorting coke off of chicks breasts. I know Bob loved women, he is a man of course. I know he loved his wife though too. Bob has been a household name for over 40 years around the world. I'd say his image is more recognizable than the Beatles of Michael Jackson or Madonna! A poor guy from a small country without a lot of resources did that. Without a cell phone or the internet. Think about that. Unity is our strength not diversity! Focusing on our striking differences, yet only going skin deep is superficial & cheap. We need to set the bar HIGHER not lower. Build up, don't knock down! Why have we gone backwards in the 40+ years since Bob wrote so many prophetic words? Here is America the government is siccing us on each other, while they run off with the money! I remember the lead singer of the greatest English band of all time from UB40 Ali Campbell said Andy's brother they see Bob Marley in 1976 it was the closest thing to a spiritual experience to this day as well. I was only 5 when Bob crossed back to source I would I've loved to see the wailers live like so many others but it's not all bad I've seen Freddie McGregor live and sir John Holt so I'm ok with. 💯🇬🇧👍

Did you grow up in Jamaica?. John Holt went everywhere around the world to sing. Jamaica had many successful Reggae singers. One of John Holt song is. " Up park Camp" Holt was also a Rasta. If you ask who is John Holt then you know very little about Jamaican musicians and music.
