my son and I just started a '64 Ford F-100 for the first time in 12 years, fresh tune up and all new fluids first. purrs like a kitten and no smoke... yet !
I love ❤️ Cougar XR7’s, I had 1974, totally fully load silver addition, it was beautiful and magical ... I miss that car, it had a 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8, I towed a trailer, and that car handled the load perfectly, I added swaying-stabilizing-gear-hookups, and would go down an empty freeway at 80 miles an hour, with the A/C on full-blast, Stereo Radio/ 8 track tape playing ... Wow, what a smooth riding car, it took the bumps so smoothly and the suspension was the best ... I was a young, 21, year old, and this car had class, so many people always gave me a thumbs-up and fell in-love with the car, it was my baby ... I really wanted the 1968 Cougar XR7, with all the options, like A/C, Stereo/cassette, full-length console, power windows, Brakes, Steering, Dual-Front-Seats, cruise control, upgraded 6 speakers, tilt-steering wheel, fully leather seats and interior, 390 cu in engine, automatic transmission, Emerald-Green exterior with black-vinyl-roof, with sun/moon roof, black-leather-Interior-through out, spoke-wire-hubcaps, and 4-barrel carburetor, dual-power-mirriors, etc., the car would have cost over $8,000.00, But, things did not work out at that time, I had to wait, and the Brand-New 1974 Silver-Edition, exterior was totally silver with silver vinyl roof, and cranberry-red interior, It was the best!!!
I had to use ether every time I wanted to start my 67 XR7 - til I put in a Holley 570 street avenger carb. Starts right every time now, no matter how long it has been sitting... cougars rule!
The best thing to do for a motor that has been sitting that long is take each plug out and squirt a little oil in and then take the coil wire off and turn it over for a few times then pull the plugs clean them and put some 2 cycle gas down the carb it will avoid a dry start on the cylinder walls, do not use eather it will clean all the oil off the cylinder walls and could lock it up, the oil will also give the piston rings to the cylinder a better seal for better vacume to suck fuel in better.
Man i don't get why people think its ok to run the starter more than 10 seconds straight! That also hurts the battery more then anything. the battery heats up and burs up the cells. i seen it happen on desiels in the winter and cars that had hard time starting.
It's cool to see these vids lots of people comment negative but half the cars like this just starting it does not make it road Worthy it was parked for a reason shocks tires radiator mufflers etc etc etc . I know I bought one like this cracked head , gas in oil guy ran it with a fryed fuel pump diaphram started right up though steering box all over the place it was more work than I wanted but it was running ....
I don't think it had enough juice to even overheat to be honest. Not only that, the old starters were a hell of a lot more durable than these newer ones. They even use them for little electric go karts XD
Judging from the uneven firing, I'd be willing to bet that one or more of the hydraulic lifters is gummed up. When you opened the hood after it was running, it sounded like there was a cylinder coming back through the carburetor, so an intake valve is likely stuck open .
I'd avoid revving the engine like that after leaving my car sit over night, let alone after sitting for 25 years. However, I bought a '66 Chevy short bed step side pickup back in 1995, and it had sat uncovered in the woods behind this guy's house for years, with the original un-rebuilt trans and engine, and we sprayed some starting fluid into the carb, and it started right up after not running for a few years, and it smoked bad for a few minutes, but it cleared up and ran great for 3 years!
TestECull Yeah but the guy didn't prime it at all.. Ether is not a primer, If he had of filled the bowls I bet it would have been running in the first few cranks.

8v-of-fury Yeah prolly. Good spark, full float bowls, functional choke, functional accelerator pump and decent mechanical condition? Pump the gas twice, bump the key, usually they come to life within a second.
Ilove the old cougars my dad had a 67 289 3 spd on the floor, well that was about 40 years ago when I was 8, tried to teach my sister to drive that car but my dad said all she kept doin was was leaving the clutch out too fast and leavind rubber on the road.
Nice car pal but you really should have gotten the car started before you started filming. You're always going to have idiotic critics that think they know all there is to know about cars and will never have anything nice to say.
I had a 68' cougar. All these sounds (starter, idle, door handle and hinges, etc...) all bring back many wonderful memories. Thanks for posting.

I love bringing old cars back from the dead. I'm doing a 67 Cougar on my channel right now.
But how to prep the motor for the start. I have one that hasn't ran for maybe 10 years, and afraid to start it. Thanks!
I love the color of that Cougar and I love the “Starsky & Hutch” 5-hole rims on her, she looks like a sweet lady.
It amazes me how cars sitting for a while start up and hold idle. Amazing. Good job man. Thanks for posting.

cougars rule!
What a beauty, putting a car back to life is the best thing.

Thanks! Just what I've been looking for. I'm a little reluctant to try and start my 68 cougar motor after it's been sitting for years.
Amazing, I love seeing these kinds of videos.
Nice lookin cougar drive her well my friend I've got a 68 base model.
Car of the year in 1967 !!!! I had one the very same color !!!!! Great car !!!! Wish I had it Back !!!! 😕
just got my cougar today. this is my second one, my first one was all used up, this one has a new engine and i built the carb
That part with the headlamp was sweet. You staring at the little kitty while it wakes up from hibernation!
I'm impressed the headlight covers stayed down for 25 years,,,,
slothmag 67/68 didn't need vacuum to stay down.
Matthew Newman Right.. the failsafe on my '70 used to pull them up overnight until i changed out the vacuum actuator...
Great video !! Love the car !! I almost junped and shouted when it started !! Good for you and the Cougar
Love the cranking!
It's a good feeling when you get a old car running after years and years of sitting
It's like watching a best friend coming back from the dead.
the worlds most indestructable starter. the wires are probably hot enough to weld with!!
It lives again.I love this car.
Shes beautiful. Come on old girl, you can do it :)
Man i don't get why people think its ok to run the starter more than 10 seconds straight! That also hurts the battery more then anything. the battery heats up and burs up the cells. i seen it happen on desiels in the winter and cars that had hard time starting.
Exactly what I was thinking.
"Than", "burns", "diesels"
Every time an engine to an old American mussel car starts after a long time of sitting a Prius dies
**muscle
haha nice
That’s wassup
The only good Prius is a dead one!
prime the carb ive never used ether to start anything even after sitting for years or in the cold
Just gasoline down the carb would have been better, but thanks for saving it, keeping it, and getting it running again!

Leave it the way it is. I like the old look to it
Good way to fry a starter.
Good cranking man. Glad she eventually fired up for ya. From that cloud of smoke, looks like you were a bit generous with that ether ;-)
I bet that started was hotter than a pepper sprout
You see those big Ansens, you know it hasn't been on the road since like '84 ;)
Man those were the days !
I'm surprised the battery held up that long o.O (I realize that it is probably a new battery, but still.)
nice job im surpised you didnt kill the starter though
I don't think it had enough juice to even overheat to be honest. Not only that, the old starters were a hell of a lot more durable than these newer ones. They even use them for little electric go karts XD
Great video. I had a '67.

that starter got a good work out
Under the hood of a FOMOCO leave the key on and jump with a screwdriver at the starter solenoid....saves a ton of in and out.
Thats a mercury?! They looked cool back then! Shes purrty :p
Why do cars like This sit for 25 Years This gem needs to be driven
Interior is remarkably CLEAN for sitting for 25+ years! Don't believe it!
I'd avoid revving the engine like that after leaving my car sit over night, let alone after sitting for 25 years.

Over six years ago... wonder what happened since.
I love these old cars. I wish I saw more of them on the road. Looks like a 302 2v with a C4 auto trans, correct?
Glad it was not Cannibalized for a Mustang
5:12: Sound of the beginning of the movie "Christine"
Can't keep a good car down. Good job.
I dont get why people constantly turn the motor like its magically going to start, you have to keep priming it
jfool289 Overpriming is just as bad as underpriming.
TestECull
Yeah but the guy didn't prime it at all.. Ether is not a primer, If he had of filled the bowls I bet it would have been running in the first few cranks.

I’m surprised you didn’t have a fire. Using is ether is not what I’d use because of that very reason! Use gasoline next time.
Ilove the old cougars my dad had a 67 289 3 spd on the floor, well that was about 40 years ago when I was 8, tried to teach my sister to drive that car but my dad said all she kept doin was was leaving the clutch out too fast and leavind rubber on the road.
R.I.P starter
+etwan fredrich It was a mercy killing!
Now that was a great cheeseburger recipe! I will try it!
That is as bad as somebody Pumping the throttle on a Fuel Injected Engine............ GET ON MY NERVES!!!
First car when was 15 yrs old.....rite-on😉
289 -- I am not surprised it started.
Yep gotta fill the float bowl up with gas first. Woulda cranked right over.
Nice car pal but you really should have gotten the car started before you started filming. You're always going to have idiotic critics that think they know all there is to know about cars and will never have anything nice to say.
I bought a 67 Mercury Cougar, I need help getting it started...Everything is good it just is gumed up inside
Man, I'd love to have that- I miss the one I sold in 87 for a z/28.
Dumbass
I can hear it saying let's go for a ride, I want to go eat some me cars for lunch.
Cool car
I know old American muscle cars hand like boats with a drunk skipper but f@@k me,i would love to own one. That sound is mental
sitting under a tree for 25 yrs not a speck of dirt or leaves on it
Dump a quart of marvel mystery oil in it, and run it for awhile
After 25 years, the gas tank should have been replaced. Also too much either will dry out the cylinder and damage the engine.
Nice video.
I've got a 67 that hasn't started in 15+. I'm 16 haha
Good, now you have too restore the whole damn car!
Poor starter motor!
thought the same thing a few of them cranks didnt seem like they were gonna stop.
Been ther done that, except mine had a 390 Interceptor with a C-6
It farted out the ghosts of its past
Put gas in the carb
Oh that poor starter!
that poor starter!
nice...how many miles on da beast.......
Shim.. that starter😉
Can't kill the Mercury!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ford starters can take a hell of a beating. But a little starting fluid would have helped
Burn the starter out of it?
DUDE, ease off on the starter! Sheesh..
Mercury will survive
Sounds like the cougar is, trying to jump out
One starter please
Great way to burn up the starter
blinker on fender 68 67 didnt have them on fenders
thats a ford for ya ;)
Still won’t run on but 6 cylinders after 25 years either !!
Try that with a rice burner,it would rust before 25 years LOL,if an old car dies...um well...it just doesn't stay dead
Hello................... you can stop anytime now and check something.
Burn that starter up.................
Sounded like it was missing on a cylinder
Why is that?
at 5:38 the car winked at me did you see that
run that starter too long and it could start the wiring on fire--lol,,-----,be careful
Gongraufuckinglations now clean those leaves up what a mess!
ill give u 8 grand as she sits :)
Tenho um Ford corcel ii ano 82
Better go out and buy a whole bunch of extra starters. I can't watch this anymore. Only into it a little over a minute.
