Abusers are generally VERY good at seeming nice and charming and gain the trust of their victims before the abuse starts. Then the victim starts to believe that it's partly their fault and tries to "work" on things to get back to that nice, charming stage. And the cycle repeats. She's a victim and he used her weaknesses and kindness against her.

Ed doesn't like/care much for Liz but also wants to plant seeds of insecurity when looking in her next relationship by saying things like " I want you to learn from this" "if you don't change you're never going to be happy." Basically telling her "it's you, you're the problem. I just want to help." That way she will feel like it's her fault, she doesn't deserve better and ultimately feel like she can't move on from him.
