  • Today, we're going to talk about septic tank maintenance. This is a common question that pops up from time to time. I'm going to discuss the method that I use and the ways that a homeowner can go about knowing when it is time. The best way to do this is to set a calendar reminder and do a pump out every 2-5 years.

Family of four. 2 FB, 2 HB, house. Rancher, Built 1971. Septic tank was built somewhere under the front lawn. NEVER pumped that tank until 2017. Had to dig up the front lawn to find the cap.
Haven’t touched it since. Kids left in 2013. 2 person house since then. 🤷
Depending on the honesty of septic pumping people is difficult.

The best way to know for sure would be to use the sludge judge. I would say a good majority of guys I've come across in this field are well-meaning and honest. Some may not be as prim and proper as people may prefer, but they're fair. The few handfuls of knuckleheads seem to flame out pretty quick. Great content & solid advice. Thank you for all of your knowledge & time to share. Any thoughts on chemicals/bowl tablets/etc, that get flushed down when cleaning? Alternatives? Thanks.

That's a good topic to cover. I'll start working up a video on it. I have posted in the past on the additives that people put down their tanks that I'll link below. On a normal residential property cleaning products wont hurt the septic due to the dilution. Now, if you're doing commercial stuff that can be a bit of an issue. A majority of issues that come from those tablets in the toilet tank that have chlorine which chews up the rubber flappers on the toilets. Running toilets are drainfield killers. I've seen so many vacant homes where the system is swamped because a toilet has been running for days/months.
