I've never tried sprouting ginger until this year, and it's extremely cool. I started about 2 months ago with one chunk of ginger that I cut into 3 pieces. I've now got 5 new plants that I've broken off the tubers & transplanted into their own pots. I just keep sticking the original chunks back in the soil, and they continue to send out more new shoots. It's truly fascinating watching how these plants grow & bend & unfurl new leaves. Any parents out there with young children would be wise to use plants like this as a fun way to teach their kids how things grow, and to grow their own food. Store bought potatoes, onions, garlic & celery are also easy to regrow.
Ginger is good for human health, in my garden just start to grow in bag is easy to move and also decoration at home garden, thanks for sharing nice tips

The stores where I live make sure the Ginger won't grow, they cut off the eyes or buds or burn them. I have managed to get only 5 pieces out of over 20 to actually grow. Price locally is around $4 a pound, and I only pick out the pieces that look like they will grow.
I’m attempted to start some in large disposable baking pans and keep warm with oven light in the oven and then move outside in a few days not that it’s starting to be in the 80s in the Dallas area and hope they’ll sprout!!!!

You motivated me to grow ginger this year...a couple of tubers sprouted on my kitchen counter...and I thought of this video and thought...Why not! And several months later...Voila! A bowl of ginger harvest. Thanks for motivating me. Forgive my ignorance....but I have to ask...I would love to attach a picture...is there a way? So proud.. I want to share!
Uncle, @ 7:31 if I have to wait until temperatures are 70 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, my growing window would only be about 10 days out of the year. I am in Northern California (soon to be a new, separate, State of Jefferson), the average temperature is 55 degrees all year around. Whenever it sprouts, it sprouts. It still works. Not well. But it does work. Ginger in the yard grows at whatever rate it feels like growing. Whenever I want some ginger, I dig it up. If it sits on the counter for too long, I throw it back in the dirt. It eventually regrows. The same method, for me, also works with potatoes. When do we get to see "part 2"?

But a week later, the green shoots started to turn yellow and the rhizomes themselves seem to either rotted or shriveled up. Not sure what I did wrong. I'm going to try to root them first next time.
I have a heated greenhouse and live in Switzerland. Can I grow it all year round or will the sun not be strong enough? I see you use small pots. Should I use a much larger pot, possibly growing 2-3 plants in a shallow large pot?

I wonder the tips, the eyes that look dead or have dark skin, if we remove the thick skin around them, would they shoot or not, I have tried this also; Another questions is that what if we shave off/the skin of the body of the ginger to make it easier for absorption of nutrients, would that make a difference, I am trying this too; Another questions is that organic ginger for some reason are smaller and shorter, would they grow to same size? and the bigger ones/non organic if we just use organic soil/coco coir, after harvest would they be "organic"? Another question what if we directly put it to the final container that is mixed of coco coir and compost? is it necessary to do it in 2 steps? thanks much

It's a one season crop where you live.... Plant it early indoors, transfer outside in the spring, harvest late summer... Then start over the next year. It won't survive the winter outside.

Need help as not getting expert advice and too many mixed comments (wasn't helpful) from the 'Growing Better' FB group. - Placed 3 ginger rhizomes in tray with soil (per your instructions in the older version ginger video) around 13th March, covered with dome cover but no heating mat as no electrical power point in the area I was rooting them. 14 days nothing happened, then on 16th day, 2 shoots shot up. Ordered heating mat, moved tray to area with power point and put mat under tray on 18th day (with cover). After 1 week, the shoots slumped down! Lots of condensation inside domed tray. Tray was quite warm. Felt the slumped down shoots, they were a bit mushy. Need to emphasize I did NOT water tray this whole time. 1. Why did shoots collapse? Did I kill them? Anyway, moved tray back to original location (this area has some sunlight but no power point so can't put mat under tray), removed mat, put on dome cover. One small shoot came back up today. 2. Felt out all rhizomes and they all had some root system, just no shoots except the one mentioned above. So will they all be OK? 3. Temps are 20-23degC in the house and its autumn here in sub-tropical Sydney, Australia. Will my rhizomes eventually send out more shoots and should I wait out the time before potting them up? Need extra reassurance that I'm on right track as first time growing ginger. Determined to make this work. Please please help! Thanks so much!!! 🙏🙏
Hey Nguon, with the cover on and the coco fiber good and moist, I generally don't have to water until well after they sprout. Just watch the medium though, everyone's conditions are different.
I live in the Piedmont region of northwest Georgia, USDA Zone 7b. I have something growing in a flower bed that I was told (by the person who sold it to me) was ginger. It looks just like what you've planted in this video. I've never tried to eat it. (I just like the white aromatic flowers it produces.) I cut it back to the ground in the fall after it wilts and it grows back every spring. It doesn't seem to mind if it freezes during the winter. Is it real ginger? (As in the kind you can eat?) How can I know for sure? (I guess I could try eating some ... but if it's not ginger, will it kill me?) Your thoughts?

I'm in Victoria, BC... So due North from you and slightly cooler.... Still grows fine. I just don't take it outside until May, and it's finished by August. Still a 6 month life cycle.... It's just that the first 2 months are indoors, lol.

Do you fertilize them or just depend on the compost or the fertilizer in the potting mix. Im using pro mix the red bag it dont have fertilize in it just the micro whatever for the roots you can seed start in it so it dont have any nutrients but I dont have to deal with fungus gnats and I use fish emulsion liquid fertilizer at 1/4 strength would this work b cuz im at the potting up stage ty
Great question Charlie. Early in, definitely no fertilizer... After the leaves unravel, for sure you'll need to look at enriching the soil. That's why I tend to replant them up into some good potting soil. After that, they are good for another month or so. Then they'll need either fertilizing or replanting to their final spot in the garden.

Hey, i was watching video is there a part 2? i grew ginger from 2 pieces and the one plant has 3 new tops and other one has like 7-9, i started around winter had them out most of summer, pulled them inside, the one has 2 younger growths, from what ive gathered its ready to harvest, but id rather focus of spreading it into more containers, Im basically wondering if i have to transplant or harvest or if i can leave it to keep growing will the root/rhizome continue to spread or does the older parts of the plant need to be harvested? basically wondering more about the harvesting process, and can you skip harvesting it and just let it continue to grow for multiple years ect
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms i would say its been 8 months or so, i live in saskatchewan i grew it in a half size rubber mate tub its rather heavy but i figured it gave rhizomes to spread around, though i may switch to your method though i was thinking of using greenbags placed inside the pots to make harvesting nd transplanting easier. i had other plants that i transplanted so half of it is mixed with fresh soil the one plant has 2 new growths and 5 old ones i greenhoused it for a bit, trimmed the dead foliage and most of them are still growing, so atm not sure if i should transplant or just let them continue to grow, i moved it inside prior to temp drops so now uncertain if should harvest or let grow more / transplant

Ginger doesn't attract too many bugs actually. Most of the pungent plants really don't.

my ginger didn't sprout. Temperatures were to low. Pieces are still in good shape. Should I make a fresh cut before planting again?

There are many types of inedible ornamental Gingers as well. I'd probably not eat it, but I'm cautious that way. :-)

What about summer overnight temps? I'm on the Oregon Coast. I suspect the summers aren't warm enough to plant outdoors.

Why did I get 2 entirely different sets of leaves? I got what you have, and a second sprout with oval leaves. They share roots.

It won't grow forever.. At least in my climate it doesn't. After about 8 months the foliage dies.... that's when I harvest

No it’s horseradish roots they are like wasabi tasting and the leaves if I can grow this I’m told are tasty to put on hamburgers or diff foods.
