Yeah! I believe the name comes from way all the legs and arms look as bendy as a rubber hose. If you're interested, check out Max Fleischer's incredible work. Also worth checking out the Superman series he did, which is very different from what he's known for, but equally wonderful.
Me too! I've been in love with this style and been calling it disney old style of drawing, just knowing the name have helped find way more content about it
I was actually thinking of doing character illustration in for this style and you're so on time. This was honestly very much educating. thank you so much ✨. Please keep up the good work and more tuts on such style.
Hahah great! Glad the timing worked out. I might make a video on some of the other pieces I've done like this, and show how I used the style to create some other characters.
I can't tell you how happy that makes me to hear! Good luck on your illustration path. Feel free to send me some of your work for review if you're ever open to it ending up in a video.
Hey thanks Jon! That's super kind of you to say. I've totally slacked off from making any new videos lately, but it seems like people like illustration - so expect a new one in the next week or so!
Glad you enjoyed it! I called them rules which makes it sound like you HAVE to do them, but they're just the things that I think work best when designing like this.
Hahah thank you! Appreciate the sub. All this recent love has pushed me to share more of my illustration work with the world. Hopefully have a new video coming soon.
can you elaborate on the single line weight rule? saw a tutorial with good results using a custom tapered brush and i liked the look, so wanted to get some clarity on that. great vid and very helpful, thank you!
Hey, thanks for watching. You can definitely use a tapered brush too, that will give it a different look though. I'd say traditionally the artists tended to keep the lines pretty uniform. If you end up with the eyes being 2pt, the mouth being 4pt, the outline being 8pt, the ears being 6pt, it will look a bit messy, that's why I try to keep everything the same weight.
@@RamenStudioDesign ah gotcha! like having too many different fonts. I don't have a tablet so finding a way to do tapered strokes is a topic of interest for me. thank you for the video!
@@scrummyvision My favourite way to do tapered strokes in Illustrator is to just use the line width tool. Draw a line, then hit Ctrl+W (from memory?) and make the end of your line 0pt, then a spot higher up the line set at your overall line width. So you get a 10pt stroke, set another 10pt stroke near the end, then taper down to 0pt.
@@RamenStudioDesign ok cool tip, I'll try that! it's still a relatively new software to me so I'm learning the thought processes. appreciate the replies!!
I never knew this style had a name

I'm super interested in learning to work with the rubberhose style, scrolled pinterest and RUclips for a bit
Good luck with it! It's one of those things that's kind of deceptive - looks very simple, but it's can be challenging to nail it.
Goodness I love this video, the vibe, the instructional content, the humor. Amazing video.

Do you know of any resources to learn the basics of rubberhose character design (skillshare, books, etc.). Like to learn how to draw the hands, feet.
The best way is to study the original source material. Look at things like Betty Boop, or anything the Fleischer's created.

Hahah thanks man. Check out my other videos if you enjoyed this one!
