Polyrhythmic Juggling (with Paul Davids)

- Paul Davids and I worked out how to juggle egg shakers polyrhythmically at Thomann's Gearhead University #tgu19. It turns out that #polyrhythms, when juggled, reveal a lot about coordination and rhythm.
Plus, it's a fun meme game. Go play it! If you do, film you and a friend juggling polyrhythms, upload it to the ol' instagram and tag me at its_adamneely, I'll be reposting them on my story.
Paul David's kickass channel...
• TOP 4 pedals for start...
Thanks to Thomann and all of the sponsors of Gearhead University for making this dumb little game possible. Next year I'll play some of your gear, I swear!

In the music corps where I did my military service, two of the drummers figured out that the warning bells at the railway crossing was chiming an 11:12 polyrhythm, and decided to learn to play it on snare. It was a very, very annoying week or two in the barracks we all shared, but they did it.

Bold of you to assume that I have friends to practice with.
relatable
Since when was a lack of friends considered an insult?
Yeah, life sucks.
Unfortunately, that's the real truth about this.
It seems like a great way to learn polyrhythms, but no friends, no learning...
Back from the wilderness i see.
Its good and I like this comment, but you don't have to be friends with anyone to practice this. Just throw the shakers at random people you will get interesting rythmic results for sure and some people will have seen this video and become your friend anyway after you hit them with the egg. Or you can do it solo using each hand as a "friend" and performing at half speed.. Which one of my suggestions is serious? My friend will tell you.
"to get started with this you first need to visualize the polyrhythmic juggle"
Uh false. You first need to find a friend nerdy enough to try this nonsense.
I was thinking “you couldn’t do 3:4:5, after all you’d need three hands” but then I thought that if you had three people in a triangle, you could have person 1 do a 3:4, p2 a 4:5, and p3 do a 5:3, building a 3:4:5 out of its component parts.
That would be hard though, I don’t think I could do it.
I want to see this now
This
...and then speed up the polyrhythm several hundred times to make a second inversion major chord because that's what Adam would want us to do.
Actual jugglers could possibly do this with siteswaps. :)
I had the same idea Beaumains1 (e.g., ruclips.net/video/WKV4EYV_UBY/видео.html)...and why stop at 3 people,? 4 people, N-people polyrhythmic juggling
This is as amazing as it is stupid. A perfect meme, love it!
Who would even think it's stupid? This is genius and if i were a music teacher at a middle school or more(which I'm not and never will be) I'd use it to teach students polyrhythms while also helping them bond together, increasing their social and musical skills at the same time, this is simply great!

@@jessechalif2428 I'm pretty sure he's talking about the comment. You don't have to click on a comment to read it.
I like that every single one of your videos has a particular structure where you dive head first into a subject and slowly draw it back and relate it to a bigger picture. The editing with all the subtle sound effects and background music really helps in making this a professional production.
The sounds, the bounce, the dropping of the eggs, and the laughs all make this look and feel exactly like an interaction from the Sims 10:21
Now, is the sims mimicking real life, or real life mimicking the sims?

"it's never like we need another musician present to play a rhythm"

Facts!
Hey Adam, neat video!
You may be interested to know that many hobbyist and professional jugglers use a system called "siteswap", which describes different throws according to the number of "counts" that a ball will spend in the air (e.g. a juggler can throw a "3", which will spend 3 counts in the air). These counts are second nature to many experienced jugglers.
You should totally recruit some jugglers to see if they can incorporate polyrhythms into their passing patterns.
I'm very displeased at RUclips not having a tool to accurately express how thoroughly I loved this!

You can laugh all you want about the silliness of this whole thing, but holy crap that's an amazing and super accessible exercise for people who are easily intimidated by the math-ness of polyrythms and music in general. I love when people turn possibly dense things into games.

I found your channel a few months ago, and have been thoroughly enjoying watching your fantastic content ever since.
Interesting what you mentioned about choreography. I've been taking dance classes for a long time, and know that some dancers like to "feel" the beat while others are constantly counting in their heads as they dance. Just like in polyrhythmic juggling, the more complicated the choreography gets, the more chance that dancers will have to actually count out the beats, at least while learning the dance.
Adam you are truly inspirational. Writers block for months and you've defo kickstarted something with this.

dude your editing is way too cool
You should look up siteswap notation. It has a lot of overlap with rhythm/polyrhythm.
tap dancing often sounds & looks to me like physicalized polyrhythm. Do you have a favorite Fred Astaire clip to analyze?
It is, I just never thought of it that way. As a musician predominantly and a dancer second, I never transferred my knowledge of rhythm over to dance. I just kind of did it. However, I learned a lot about stage presence, choreography, and costuming through dance and have utilized that.
Is there really a difference between playing a drum with your hands vs the floor with your feet?
I do House dance and I often like do 2:3 and 3:4 polyrhythm with my feet. I hop on one foot to the regular beat of the music and tap the other foot on the toe to a different rhythm to form the polyrhythm
Don't know why I didn't see this video earlier, but it just popped up now. Anyway, this is actually great! I like it!!
Your reference to White Christmas was great! I’ve been binging the music from that movie lately.
