Pakistan’s First Lady: Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan - Podcast with Nasir Baig

Begum Ra'ana Liaqat Ali Khan known as Gul-i-Rana (13 February 1905 - 13 June 1990) was the First Lady of Pakistan from 1947 to 1951 as the wife of Liaquat Ali Khan who served as the 1st Prime Minister of Pakistan. She was also the first female governor in Pakistan, serving Sindh. She was one of the leading woman figures in the Pakistan Movement, and a career economist, and prominent stateswoman from the start of the cold war till the fall and the end of the cold war.
Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan, also known as the First Lady of Pakistan, was a trailblazer in her own right. She was the wife of Pakistan's first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, and played a significant role in the country's struggle for independence.
As the Governor of Sindh, she was instrumental in promoting women's rights and education in the region. Her dedication to social welfare and empowerment made her a revered figure among the people of Pakistan.
1. Early Life and Education:
Begum Ra'ana was born in Almora, India, in 1905. She received her education at the University of Lucknow and later at the University of London, where she became the first Muslim woman to receive a degree in economics.
2. Political Activism:
Begum Ra'ana was actively involved in the Pakistan Movement and worked alongside her husband to advance the cause of independence. She was a founding member of the All-India Muslim League and later served as the Vice President of the Pakistan Red Cross Society.
3. Social Reforms:
Begum Ra'ana was a staunch advocate for women's rights and social welfare. She established numerous organizations to empower women and improve healthcare and education in Pakistan.
4. Diplomatic Career:
Begum Ra'ana also had a successful diplomatic career, serving as Pakistan's Ambassador to the Netherlands and Italy. Her diplomatic efforts helped strengthen Pakistan's international relations.
Begum Ra'ana’s efforts in promoting women’s rights led to the passage of several laws in Pakistan that improved the legal status of women in the country.
Her humanitarian work during the partition of India and Pakistan helped thousands of refugees find shelter and support during a tumultuous time.
As Pakistan’s delegate to the United Nations, Begum Ra'ana advocated for the rights of developing nations and highlighted the importance of gender equality in international relations.
