Well at least I wasn’t shamed that badly lol I was the tech that worked on it, the 2 traces went up when I was wicking solder up on attempt 2 (probably should have stopped on try 1) only reason why I asked was because I was embarrassed which is why I said please and added a emoji at the end I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful I’m sorry you took it that way I guess now that we are here what should I have done better? I have been staying away from usb c because of those hidden pins, I find when I do them I don’t get the solder melting fast enough which is why it got crispy I have my hot air set at 435 and usually 4-8 for air flow depending on what I do, I did this one by heating from the bottom because I didn’t want the inside pins to not melt and the outside pins to melt tearing even more traces either way thank you

No Worries. You should not be ashamed of a failed repair attempt. Rather you should seek to learn from your mistakes. Hopefully this video gave you a glimpse on how it should be done. The pads could have been broken from the very start, or it could be that you did not apply enough heat to melt solder or you pulled on the connector too soon before solder liquified. All in All the Secret is now revealed :-).

:-) I honestly never had a request like that before and I would most likely not answer back. Customers usually ask if I can make a video on there device and they would pay extra so they can see how it's done. The one customer that asked that I do not make a video, I did, but not out of disrespect. It was an unreasonable request since no information was being shared and the device is just another laptop that we fix in the shop. I just wanted to get out the message out.

Honestly, a huge impact on your success rate comes from using quality equipment. If your hot air station isn't powerful enough you're going to crispy without flowing. Inadequate heat for too long.
Same with your iron - if you're using a crappy iron that can't maintain temp you're just going to burn things. All in all, this was actually a pretty simple repair assuming you're using quality gear.

But it is common when doing HDMI or Type-C port replacements for the pads to be ripped or weakened when the port breaks off the board. So having a few come off is nothing to be ashamed of. It's happened to me and I'm sure it's happened to everyone in this business.

Also a couple Sony Viao's that work fine but are pword locked so should be an easy one to reset I am hoping, I got a pretty neat kit from Ali which is a quite potent variable PSU with 20 odd laptop connectors of different types. Decent connectors on it too, not your usual two bits of wire you shove in the holes, polarity and voltage set on the box and the connectors are staggered bullet types so no danger of crossing lines :) I cut my computing teeth on a Commodore Pet, broken and begged for at our local tip back in the latish 70's, fixed, then fixed a second one, money from both bought a broken 8086 IBM, fixed and used that until I got my 386DX PC to go along with my ZX80, ZX81, ZX Spectrum and Atari 400 for gaming on.

The unit won't power up intermittently does. The power port light doesn't come on. I would bet if I sent that laptop to you it would have been repaired the 1st time! Hello NorthRidge Fix! I am a fan of your channel and I actually learn a lot from your videos. I've fixed a couple laptops now and I am stil learning. If you don't mind me asking, how do you reflow the ports like in this video and other PS4 PS5 Videos? Do you angle the hot air nozzle away from the port itself? I'm trying to figure out the technique and I don't have board to play with right now.
Do you angle it at a certain degree or how does it look when zoomed out?

Hello. How you will be sure that the second Row of Connectors under the Port was heated enough and soldered too ?
I like your Channel and Job very much. Great to see.

All is good as long as both parties are aware of the consequences. It is very true that the customers can only ask to fulfil special requests and the service provider can choose whether to do it or not. At the same time though, the customer can choose to simply pass their business to someone else next time. No harm and no foul if both parties decide not to work with each other, but I would suggest smaller repair shops to not limit their opportunities this way.

I think the customer was using reverse psychology in order to ensure his board would show up in a video so he could see the repair being made. IT WORKED!

a little solder added to the 2 new pads prior to reflow would've been better...

If it's a request to not do a video, they need a specific reason. Not "just don't do it". One would be a young kid who tried replacing it and is afraid his parents will find out, or something. Maybe you'd honor that. But you weren't told a reason.
Unreasonable demands (such as asking a RUclipsr who is also a repairman to not do a video on a repair... which is literally half of his job...) shouldn't be met. I agree with you fully on that. It's unreasonable on the basis that you were actually given *no* reason.
Glad to see it got sorted out in the pinned comment though. No shame in a failed repair.

To me it looked like exposed ground or power plane under those ripped pads. Or was it just the color of PCB? As it did not take solder I would assume it was PCB or too dirty to take solder.

How is that hot air can liquify solder before it melts the plastic inside the connector?

The solder has a really low melting point. I believe he uses low heat solder.
