I'd love to see more backpacking-youtubers feature guys like Ben who only go out 2 or 3 times a year. I've felt a lot of pressure (unintended, without a doubt) from channels like Devin and Dan Becker to constantly improve my loadout with lighter, not comfortable options. Seeing Ben's stuff was really freeing--I can just go out with what I have and enjoy it.

Great concept with this one. Meeting up with all of these folks in the industry is so insightful, and you keep it light hearted too. This reminds me of the Huckberry “What’s in their EDC” series.
After some intense experimentation with new gear and methods, I’m slowly drifting toward the “just use what works” realm. My ditty, FAK and electronics have all been mostly the same the last few years. Kind of makes sense. At some point you land on your own preferences.
Now if only there was such a thing as the perfect pack, shelter and sleep system!
That's basically how I gear up. I usually look for stuff that has been out a bit and has good reviews while consisting of what I need it for. Nothing wrong with either way just as long as you enjoy yourself and have a good time.

What a fun collaboration (Utah represent!). As an “amateur” backpacker and knife enthusiast it was great hearing “nerd” talk on both subjects. I love the different perspectives on gear (especially Ben’s utilitarian approach), as I still use “outdated” gear, but also slowly upgrading to more modern “lighter” gear. I’m lucky to get into the backcountry a few times a year so I can relate trying to balance using what I already have vs. spending money upgrading to new lighter gear.
Maybe a future video could be going back 10 or 15 years and seeing what was the highest rated / most popular gear in backpacking at that time and seeing how it holds up today.

@@BackcountryExposure Sweet, that sounds great. I was at the DI yesterday buying cheap kitchen supplies for an upcoming tent camping trip with my family and saw they had some older camping supplies that might be fun to try out (goodwill camping treasures) > or not 😂
This was a cool video. I'm right between the two of you. For example, I've got a mess kit from Walmart that I've had for years, but I've also got a Helinox chair. Also, I gave my son my Big Agnes Frying Pan SL2 (which is still great shape), and I upgraded to a REI quarter dome sl2. I'm definitely a happy medium kind of camper, hiker & backpacker.

Sweet knife! I think I’m going to get one for my son for his birthday. He will love that you can buy different scales/ “skins” (thats what the kids call them) We also have a 3D printer so it could be fun. Love when guests come along. I don’t think influencers understand how much we love it. How often does Joe Rogan do a podcast by himself? He is the star but it would get boring if it were just him all the time. I wish content creators would subscribe to that more. And they don’t always have to be another RUclipsr. It could be just a regular backpacker even a subscriber type thing. See their gear load out and probably pick up a trick or two.

I use the same fire maple pot with their hornet stove. I am also using Fire Maple's dandelion table. As you can tell, I am a fellow backpacking gear head, too!!!
I like Ben’s utilitarian approach. I fell down the gear rabbit hole for a little bit and found I kept going back to the same pieces over and over. All that other stuff I’d picked up just collected dust.
I think that ought to be the approach for most people, especially if you're only getting out a few times a year. :)

@@benbanters I had Klymit Static V for years. And it was fine. It wasn’t until I upgraded to a nicer pad (a Thermarest if I remember correctly) that I realized how uncomfortable the Static V really was hahah.

@@benbanters I just got one of their All Season pads after a total failure of my Sea To Summit pad on the Lost Coast Trail. Jury is out still. Haha. I’ve only had two nights on it so far.
My pack is so different…it’s like a mix between UL backpacking meets bushcraft survival 😂

I'm certainly a weekend warrior with a LOT of outdoor time in my past (Scouts, military, etc.) but now I'm older, have more money, and enjoy getting out there for shorter trips.
I find that I enjoy the pursuit of great gear. Can I rough it? Sure, I can do the 1/8" pad and a wool blanket and a tarp with a bugnet on my head. I don't enjoy that (very often). I've truly enjoyed diving into gear; it was about 3 years ago that I really got back into it, and the gear had changed a lot from the prior 5 or so years that I'd been away from it. I'm Durston/Zenbivy/Gregory... and I make no apologies for it. I still love finding a great deal on a great piece of gear, particularly if it is light and useful. What I've found is that the better my gear is, the easier it is to carry, and the better it functions which makes me want to get out way more; even if only to test the gear! Kfafs has my respect for taking what he has; I dig that and did precisely that same thing for the vast majority of my life, but I wondered as he presented that if he'd go camping much more often if his gear was just nicer. He pulled out that pad and I thought 'that's gonna be a bad time'. He pulled out that pillow and said he realized it just kinda sucked and was uncomfortable out there. I dunno, I've had a few of the best nights sleep of my life outdoors. That Zenbivy system is just amazing. And while I agree they have an amazing pillow, I prefer my Flextail Zero tall pillow which is just $27 (you should try it). It's amazing.
I think the best sleep I ever had was in my X-Mid 1, on an Exped Ultra 7R with my Flextail Zero pillow and a Horizon Hound GR-20 quilt. All things considered, that's a pretty inexpensive setup and it was incredible performance. The X-Mid 1 is... $234. My trekking poles to set it up were Cascade from Costco, so $35. The Exped was a bit expensive $219. The Horizon Hound GR-20 on Amazon is $90. I got my backpack from Sierra for $85 (this one was a Gregory Zulu 30 which I bought as last-year's colors from Sierra). The Flextail Zero tall pillow is $27. That's an amazing long 2 season or short 3 season camp system. Grand total? $690 USD. It's also super light, and packs really small but incredibly comfortable.
I've got more expensive stuff; in fact to dip a little further into the shoulder seasons I'll tie my 40F EE Revelation to my Zenbivy Light sheet using some magnetic silicone cable ties. Even that only adds about $170 to the total, and the weight is almost exactly the same.
I've been using a superior gear hammock for many years, love them. No fussing with the underquilt is really nice. I prefer a dyneema tarp though, the superior shelter is a palace, but it's a bit heavy for my taste.

Yeah I don't know about whiffing ball sweat from the peak loft 😂 Nice go with the hammock. I dig the ground sheet. Good size. I'm still in the headlamp/flashlight rabbit hole. Picked up a Skilhunt H150 with a high CRI 3000K floody emitter. Love it. Armytek Wizard C2 Pro Nichia 4500K arrives soon. This will be for a specific trip.

I use a rollup hard foam convoluted pad. Just got a tent a few years back. Teton hiker backpack.
I give the edge to Ben on his gear setup. Ground sleeper and better pack.
A good idea for videos like this would be weighing the packs to see how heavy the pack carried by “the hobbiest” vs “the pro weighs at the trailhead
Ahhhh I had thought about that but didn’t have the scale.
You know I’m normally in a tent, but switched it up for this one. That Aether series of packs has been a great option for many years. They carry weight exceptionally well.

Is it the best, greatest sleeping pad out there? No. But it is way better than most. Bang for the buck, you can’t beat it.

Other than the fatal leak issues Klymit seems to have on a consistent basis, I think they are a good pad for the money. Far from being the most comfortable though.
YES! Superior Gear Hammock getting some love! I have it and it's awesome. I own the elite version of their original design. Confirmation bias engaged.
Of all the hammocks I’ve tried so far, this has been the best sleep. I still struggle with hammocks, but I’m enjoying this one.
@@BackcountryExposure It’s a little tricky to find the correct position even when you mostly get a flat-ish lay. And as a slide sleeper it’s even harder. But once you’ve found the correct sweet spot, the no pressure point nature of the hammock ensures that you stay asleep.
Hammocks are the most comfortable sleeping setup for me, especially after getting a 12' one. Still only 18 oz including a mosquito net
@@jays7318 they haven’t been nice to me over the years. But this superior one so far has been the most enjoyable. I still get weird pressure on my heels that I can’t figure out.

I'd be interested in your ground sheet and am curious about the fabric used. Been looking at getting one of those Tyvex ones from Hilltop Packs or CampCovers on Etsy. Home Depot won't cut to size a small piece for me.

I have carried a small swiss army knife for over a decade and feel it's overkill. I have yet to have a situation arise where I wished I had a bigger knife.
Nice! Often that's the same for me. I am bit of a knife nerd though, so tend to always have more knife than necessary on my trips. ha
I never buy a tent that has only just come out! You can get confused with all the advertizing hype and later find out it is rubbish like a lot of the MSR Tents in severe mountain wind/storm conditions. I'm purchasing a tried and tested for years USA made KUIU Storm Star 2p tent. Why because it has proven to withstand serious wind, snow loads and rain conditions. Never buy a product just come out on the market, which does not have at least 3 years under its belt with users!

Calling you a pro is like calling a sports analyst a pro athlete, they may know a lot but they don't have the real experience. I would call a triple crowner or people along those lines a pro. I woke up pisssedddd

It seems like you either do not know the amount of experience Devin has or you have some bias into how you value experience. Devin already addressed the first, so I'd like to address the second because I think it's important to recognize the value different experiences bring to the table. I 100% agree that people who do triple crowns and a ton of long trails have a lot of knowledge and great experience. I'm a big fan of Darwin, Dixie, and Jupiter. I'm also a big fan of people like Devin who has decades of experience with a wide range of gear in a wide range of conditions/environments. I think everyone in the community benefits from the experiences of people putting thousands of miles on the same gear on the same trail AND the experiences of people putting thousands of miles on different gear in different environments.
Either way, I don't think it's necessary to discount anyone's experience and we should approach things from a place of positivity instead of trying to bring others down.

Dang it man with the ear plugs. I like the "run it till the wheels fall off" approach. I want stuff that works and lasts... something you can count on. (I should have used this approach with women). In retrospect gear and women are lot alike. Thanks for the share and the work that goes into it. 👴
