  • This is from a film that was never finished. The idea was to produce a nostalgic look at Wigan in March 1973 as it was just about to start going through the huge changes to turn it into the town it is today. There are tantalising glimpses of areas of terraced houses that are now gone and the start of building the 'new' shopping centre. Finally some views of Ashurst's Beacon.

Excellent observation sir, but how young folk bashed each other about back then, for a myriad labyrinthine plethora of reasons

Im a teen who currently lives here. I honestly cant thank you enough for uploading this. My parents and grandparents always tell me about how Wigan once was. So this video has truly shown me what they mean. Compared to what Wigan is now, it looked a lot friendlier and active. Now everywhere is dull. Thank you very much for giving me and others a vision of what this town once was.
It also feels quite strange seeing so many areas that are so familiar to me appearing in this. Its a true blast from the past even though I wasnt there to experience it.

    Nice👍👍❤
I left Wigan in 1970, moved to Australia (Perth) with my family. I was 11 in 1973. Dont remember much, except the park and town centre. I lived at 274 Wallgate, the house has long gone. It was between the Seven Stars pub (where the bridge went over the canal) and the train bridge going over the main road.
    Really enjoyed watching this, thanks❤👍🇭🇲

1973, the year I was born in (Golborne) near Wigan. Makes me feel old, watching this as everything looks so dated. I remember being in a pram like what those woman in the park had. This guy making films in 1973 was clearly ahead of his time. Who would have thought almost 50 years later 1000s would be watching it? Left home at 18 to go to University and only ever went back to see my (now) late father who passed in 2015. He was originally from Pemberton, then lived in Kitt Green. Haven't been to Wigan for many years, but it's always been a bit of a depressing place, but with many architectural and industrial gems, that the local council seem hell bent on destroying

thanks for this. originally from Wigan, now living in the US. triggered a lot of happy childhood memories especially of the long summer days spent in Mesnes Park. in 4 weeks I'll be visiting my mum who still lives in wigan, first trip to the UK in years, looking forward to it!

I am in the US. I went back home in August and called into my hometown of Wigan while I was there. The place has changed a lot. While I was there, they were taking down the wigan galleries. Heartbreaking to see it getting demolished. I do not like what they did with Wigan baths either. Transformed it into what they laughingly call a swimming pool.

Im a wigan lad through & through. I was born the year after in good old 1974 in PoolStock. I now live in the US & went back home just a couple of months ago. I actually watched those two chimneys being remotely detonated & destroyed with my dad when I was a youngun. Its hard to believe growing up those statues were actually a lot older than me. LOL !!!

Comparing to other vids of current Wigan - it was better then wasn't it?
