I was at NYL-MIN Game 1. Us Liberty fans were stunned. The Liberty were very lucky to even get to OT. I didn't think the 18-point lead would last. When NYL was only up 3, I knew Courtney Williams (whose dad I saw nearby) would hit the shot-I didn't expect the 4-point play.
Wemby could be running for *3* different awards at the end of the season, the DPOY should go to the best DPOY(.) is not a team award, reason Wemby was the clear winner last year, Spurs were top DT when he was on the floor.
You guys are sleeping on Stephon Castle too much. He has a NBA ready body, plays like a vet, legit elite perimeter defense, and will get plenty of playing time. He often looked like the best players on the floor with the Spurs, even sometimes with Wemby and CP3 on the court, and even when his shot wasn't falling. He'll be the best player from this draft class, watch.
Got some relevant stats for DPOY conversation too. I agree that it feels like Wemby's award to lose, BUT it would be a huge shift from what we've seen for the last 2 decades if he wins it on a "bad" or even "average" team, so to speak. 16 of the last 21 winners were on teams that won at least 50 games and finished the season 3rd in defensive rating or better. 10 of the last 12 hit those same two marks and the other 2 had 48 wins. 20 of the last 21 winners were on teams that finished 5th or better in defensive rating. Spurs last year were 22nd in defensive rating (116.4) and won 22 games. Aside from Wemby's development, how else is San Antonio going to improve this year (especially on the defensive end)? I think the question of how good the Spurs need to be for him to win this award is a good one. Even in the context of such a generational talent (who certainly has the narrative working in his favour), it feels like at minimum the team needs to be over .500 and top 10 in defensive rating which would go hand in hand but is still quite the leap.
The Spurs were also a top 5 defense when Wemby was on the court last year (110 DRTG). They were just the worst defense of all time when he was off the court. You can't hold his team incompetence against him. Post all star break, they were actually a winning team when Wemby played.
@@arkadefire5909 Spurs went 8-14 after the All-Star break with Wemby. Actually 3-2 without. No I don't think they are better without him based on that stat, but your claim that they were a winning team when he played post AS is false. As for how much better they are with him on the court, I obviously won't debate that. Wemby is a generational talent, but unless the team improves and wins a lot more games this year, it will buck a 2 decade long trend for him to win the award. I'm not saying he can't do it. I'm saying it doesn't make sense for him to be favoured so much when his team is so bad and it has become a team award of sorts these last 20+ years.
@@PeachBasketandaDream The Spurs finished the year 11-12, but the point was when Wemby played ON the floor the Spurs were a winning team (+1.6 NETRTG and top 5 defense in the NBA). Matter of fact, the Spurs were the best defense in the NBA for the last 15 games with 106 DRTG. Wemby was just playing limited minutes and the bench was all time bad, penalizing him for that is stupid. These are individual awards, it's not "Defensive Team of the Year."
Move the goal posts if you want. I think you're missing the point. Unless you think that stretch of 23 games translates to 50 wins for the spurs this year and a top 5 defensive rating then it's simply not relevant to what I am saying. I am not penalizing anyone for anything. I actually don't even get a vote for DPOY. I'm just not ignoring 2 decades of recent history with this award. It *should* be an individual award and it *is* named that way, but recent history has shown that is not how the decision is made by most voters. Just like how MVP rarely goes to the most "valuable" player.
Thibs sleeps In his office chair, just ups n go, slap some Bryll creme over his bald spot ,slicks the side boards and starts yelling.. Needs to be 2 defensive awards, bigs that block shots is not a dpoy to me. I would take 5 Marcus smart or O.G over 5 Rudy's. Big and guard/forward award makes sense
Guys I'm offering you the opportunity of being the only NBA guys pronouncing Risacher correctly. This "S" should be pronounced as a "Z", just s smooth "Rizacher". Big Z, Zach Edey, Risacher sale pronouncination. Write history, the first, and the only one. Go for it, guys. Decade long love from Paris guys.
The simple way to find out how it's pronounced is to get Sidney 2000 olympics finals : Zacch's father played it and lost (by only 10) against Team USA.
@@Ebriel0000000 Yep, Stéphane Risacher was a Paris player from the 90s, went to see many of his game, he even ran and practiced in the summer in a stadium next to my school.
IDK Tas, Reed Shepherd might be the best shooter on the rockets already. And his playmaking/gaurd defence will make it hard to keep him off the court imo. I think he’s the 7th man on that team Edit: also Wemby’s DPOY barring injury. He literally was their entire defence last year and played two months with Zach Collins as their Center. It doesn’t matter if their middling, you can visibly see his impact.
He’s obviously a very good player but I don’t think he’ll play enough to win ROY. I think Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore, and Tari Eason are coming off the bench before him. Him and Jae'Sean Tate will flip flop as the 9-man from game to game. (Until there’s a trade, of course). -Tas
I know you guys were focused on NBA players, but if I can add to the conversation a bit from the WNBA side of things: Jackie Young was drafted first overall in 2019 and was all-rookie that year. In 2022 she won Most Improved. I don't think it has any bearing on the Wemby MIP talk, but I did just want to bring it up as another basketball player who was drafted first overall and later won MIP. Love the show. Can't wait to be back on the daily No Dunks intravenous. Congrats on 20 seasons!
Loved that you started with the incredible Lynx Liberty game but then to spend less than a minute on it? Just to segue into speculating about nba awards taking place 8 or 9 months from now? I know this is an NBA show but I'd love to see you guys work in the womans game. Especially when it's as immediate and impactful as a finals matchup! Get ahead of the curve why don't ya!

Josh Diddy (Giddey) ain't winning the M.I.P, even if he deserved it. That guy shouldn't even be in the league and people are gullible asf to believe anything he says or whatever his defence lawyers come up with. The guy was asking other girls if they had friends similar to their ages. I like how the league just stays quiet about it and hope people will forget and it goes away.
Bringing Brunson taking a dumb contract into an MVP discussion is ridiculous. If anyone votes based on that they clearly do not deserve to have a vote.
@@williamroper5422 tbf that's how Steph won. He was on a cheap contract and his team was the most stacked bc of it by far. He shouldn't ever been MVP w that roster. Brunson argument is kinda like when Brady took a paycut except Brady Rodgers and Watt were the best in league and jb not close
Brunson winning an MVP before Luka would be hilarious.
that steph stat is so crazy to me skeets they had the man sitting 4th quarters back then i’m still shocked he’s under 25ppg for the 1st mvp season
I wonder how long it takes Tas to do his hair

Could we get a “Overreacting to the Preseason” pod? Maybe a short if you’re too stacked with previews? 🌻
A solid 60 minutes was right.

Mobley for MIP
Whats up with the new thumbnails? AI generated? They just dont look the same. Bring back the old style plz!
