Here's how we did our recreation of one of my favourite visual / practical effects from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - the "Path of God" scene where Indy must take a leap of faith into a high ravine, where an "invisible" bridge is camouflaged through the use of forced perspective.
Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) created this amazing effect by filming Harrison Ford against a blue screen, and compositing him into a shot of a model bridge and matte painting backgrounds (cheaper than building a full-size set). A puppet of Ford was used to create a shadow on the model.
We attempted to recreate this effect in our studio using a green screen (our green screen is bigger than out blue screen for full-length shots) and a slider to do the sideways camera movement for the character. We couldn't do as long a move as in the film, which was most likely done using a track and dolly, and when building the model we had to scale down the move even further. I am by no means a master matte painter like they had at ILM, so the result isn't photorealistic but hopefully demonstrates the technique!
We didn't have any kind of motion control like ILM probably did, and so instead we filmed the full-scale element first, filmed the model at half speed (guessing the distance though trial and error) and then used time-remapping to match the timing to the first shot. Then we used motion tracking to do most of the matching to "stick" the figure into the right place to the bridge, with some manual adjustments of position keyframes to finish.

This is incredible man! You really nailed this effect!
Many thanks!
@IanHubert Lmao, nice fake IanHubert account 😂
Why did they make it so easy???
@@SteveRamsdenRUclips please show how to turn dinosaur miniature into cgi.
I was at ILM when they were wrapping this set-up, and it was pretty cool to see this effect in person. A true magicians trick! I was also impressed with the 35mm still camera shooting the mine car sequence. Old school Innovation!
Amazing - I might need to try the stop-motion mine car chase at some point!
Doing this effect with modern CG would probably take about a third of the time and effort, but what you've done here is 1000% more satisfying and impressive. Love it!
hey you aren't Ian Hubert
@@aiduet3D Yeah you should probably report him for impersonation
@IanHubert get a life
@IanHubert Buddy, you’re out here insulting Steve Ramsden’s hard work whilst pretending to be someone else on the internet. It’s pathetic.
@IanHubert No, you're not. You're not fooling anyone.
Amazing work man!
you're both amazing
Ay it's the meme man 😤 wsg jonk
Of all the illusions in that movie, this was the most awesome. It literally blew my mind. This goes to show that the movies of the 70s and 80s were the best. BTW, you did an incredible job using off the shelf parts and cameras. Well done.
He's not also a good editor, but a good painter also HAHAHAHA, wow
This blew my mind as a kid. I miss miniatures
Phenomenal job!
Sup I like your channel
Your bridge even blends in more with the background than the original shot. Well done.
That's a hell of a lot of work for this effect, very well done!
I’m not sure why this popped up on my feed... but super happy I watched it!!!
Same 😂
This is seriously impressive! You achieved an effect done in 1989 with just your computer and a few equipment at home. I wanna say, where getting to the point where someone at home with a YT channel can pull off better effects than a major studio with a 200 million dollar budget!
I cannot imagine the amount of hours to get that effect in 1984
89, but yeah. The whole photochemical process for combining actual physical film must've been exhausting on its own! Truly genius people at the top of their game - again and again 👏
Seriously! Even with modern technology, that single shot was very pain staking and time consuming, I can't imagine having to do that on film and without modern computer programs.
*1989
The tedious part is the motion control photography and part with the optical printer(luckily they were slowly phased out at the time when I started doing VFX).
I don't make movies or work with CGI and I'm still enjoying watching.
@1:06 they used a motion control rig, that can scale the motion, so that the motion of the shot of Harrison Ford matches the motion of the miniature bridge.
Awesome recreation. Always so much more to it. Thanks for sharing.
Incredible amount of work, skill, patience just achieve a believable scene.
Well done sir.
All the times I've watched this movie and never noticed Harrison's feet moving...lol
The amount of work you put to create this video is insane, nice job buddy
Nice video live how you use simple techniques to make nice effects. Nice work
Underrated channel to be honest! Really cool and professional content! Thank you, Steve!
Well done Steve 👏 at the time of writing this you have 445 likes and zero dislikes, that tells you something 👍
Very impressive! Well done. I think this shot in the movie blew everyone’s minds from the throwing of the dust particles onto the “invisible” bridge to Indy stepping across it.
Great duplication of that _trompe-l'œil_ effect.
You’re a freaking genius! You always get the effect you want with limited resources!
One of the best scene of The movie with the drinking from cups scene.
I thought it was stupid, because it only works in movies with a controlled camera. Indiana Jones should have been able to see the bridge easily.
@JustMy Thought Yeah, I see your point. I just always assumed that the illusion was "intended" to be seen at Indy's eye level, and once he took a few steps "on faith" that the bridge would be visible. The idea being that it was not visible _until after_ he took the first steps. The fact that the perspective has to be different for the camera is just so that we as viewers can also be tricked by the illusion, if that makes sense. At least that's how I always understood it.
Thumbs up for the shear amount of effort you put in alone. Awesome work as always
Wow, cudos to you for doing it the hard way. I would have stollen a rock wall photo in 2D then used photoshop with the distort feature to cut and past the section of the bridge face from the original rock face onto the bridge face.
Another awesome video! I love how you go after existing effects and reproduce them... with amazing results. It goes to show any film maker that these effects ARE possible, even on a budget! Thanks, Steve!
Wow love it! Incredible work!! Want see more!! 🤩👍
Amazing!!! Looks incredible!! Great work.
Well done. That's one of my favorite effects shots from all films...
Awesome man! Keep making videos bruh
Amazing!! Big project and wonderful.
Truly amazing!!!
Love to see more of these things.. Very nice
Well done! That was a lot of fun to watch.
That really turned out great! Nice work!
Simply awesome ! Good job.
Hats off to you for actually painting all of that and for achieving the same effect with home studio equipment.
Wow 😍😱 that was incredible. So much work and passion but it was worth it
simply AMAZING
Absolutely spot on 👌
You did a great job! One of my favorite movies
Fantastic!!!! One of my favourite movies ever! You did an amazing job!!!!
That was indeed awesome
This flat out inspires me. Well done!!
It's really great experiment to get the experience. One of the best illusion or perspective to reveal the scene and in little magic. The great scene and ideas to recreate as new in your own way of storytelling. Keep learning and developing in yourself and others for viewers.
Shadows with puppets? Amazing.
I like hearing about the old methods almost as much as seeing your recreations.
Dude you crushed it!!
I love these! Good job bro!
This one is insan 🔥🔥
Incredible
Great job Steve !
Brilliant! You've inspired me...again! Cheers and Love from Atlanta.
Class work, great job.
Damnnn I love this!🔥
Amazing work! Love that scene and also your version now too.
I love your work Steve, you have been my help to make the last video that I have published on my channel! A video within the Guardians of the Galaxy movie that I would love to hear from you.
Me encanta tu canal!! El vídeo de Guardianes de la Galaxia está genial Antonio, saludos crack
Keep up the great work my searches keep coming back to your videos so you definitely have your finger on the pulse helping us all with these tutorials.
Brilliant job !
Idk why this made me emotional?! hahahaha amazing work man. I grew up loving Indiana Jones' trilogy and now I'm a filmmaker myself.
Wow this is really cool!
I'm blown away
Wow, what a great job man!
That's so cool.
Miniatures are one of my favourite things about making films, you nailed the effect perfectly spot on dude.
Good for you man. Wow . I am so impressed
Outstanding.
Wonderful!
Superb. Well done!!
Wow replication and improvement added.
PURE TALENT 🙌😎
That was great! Good job! I love that invisible bridge sequence
Amazing!!
Works in the cinema but they proved that it wouldn’t have fooled Indy (wasn’t myth busters, but some similar show). Having two eyes on it your brain can work out the perspective difference. Obviously it works in film as you’re viewing a ‘flat image’. Not taking anything away from the scene (or then while film for that matter), it’s awesome
Incredible work, Steve! So glad I found your channel! Super inspiring.
This is great!
Amazing
Awesome man good work
amazing job, congrats!!
Fascinating work! Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is amazing
Cool new transitions!
this is awesome brother, you impressed!!!!
wow amazing !!!!!!
I never realized the bridge was there the whole time. I thought it was actually invisible. Lol. This makes a lot more sense.
I'm kind of guessing with my interpretation that it was there the whole time, just invisible... who knows! 😆
@@SteveRamsdenRUclips Honestly, I am not even 100% sure I know what I thought was happening before(it didn't really make sense.) This does. Thanks!.
This shot goes by pretty fast in the movie, and it’s an effect most people have no personal experience with. (And it doesn’t really quite work in person if you have two eyes or move your head at all.) So I think many, many viewers didn’t understand what was happening. Too bad, because it’s a clever idea and well executed.
Really impressed by this. wow
You are a golden god, sir.
Amazing job. Subscribed!
Well done mate!
Can you make a video on the glass mate painting effect? Where you project your footage trough the glass.
there's a thought, I'd need some painting lessons though haha
@@SteveRamsdenRUclips i mean, the painting you made in this video is alredy awsome!
This is amazing illusion effect. Top number one
Very cool!
Impressive! Just when I just re-watched The Last Crusade yesterday!
Bravo! Well done. You have serious skills. Thank you for sharing.
I like your work keep up
Your painting skills are on point! Well done!
That was awesome, man. Well done!
This is really cool
This was awesome!!!
Could you do a James Bond Gunbarrel tutorial?
