I just discovered your page and your journey and I am loving following. I am from southeast Alabama and you can find peanuts on the side of the road all of the time here when the production facilities are running. The open trucks they haul them around in are always dumping them out and they end up collecting on the side of the road. Its definitely great free snack food! Have a great rest of your trip and I can't wait to see future videos!
Pretty section but it’s no fun hiking w stomach woes! There’s a spot on the West Highland Way in the Scottish Highlands that has a river taxi you can use. The hotel on the other side put up a pole...you hoist up an orange colored volleyball and they’ll send across a boat to pick you up. Great system! It’s about 15 min across, larger river, so you just have to hope someone see’s the volleyball in not too long but they have great rooms, a restaurant, and ale on tap as a reward for waiting! Good times!
I’m currently at about the halfway mark to the AT. I have a few hundred more miles of the Florida Trail, then the Alabama Roadwalk, Pinhoti Trail, and part of the Benton MacKaye.
My wife died from a tick bite 2 weeks before our 39th anniversary. That was almost 4 years ago. In CT, about 50% of our ticks are carrying one or more diseases. There are 8 tick diseases. 4 are viral and 4 bacteriological. You need to treat your clothes and gear with permethrin. The tiny ones are the killers. The ones with the white spot can carry a disease that will make you allergic to mammalian products. Alpha Gal hikes is a victim. I don't know if the permethrin will dissolve again after it's first drying. It works for me but I don't wade in swamps anymore. Good Luck, Rick
Ticks are the worst, uggg. Keep checking and rechecking, especially you bag. Feel bad for you, here you couldn't wait to eat and ot ended up attacking you stomach, that's so horrible. Hoping tomorrow will be better after rest, getting clean and relaxing a bit.
It certainly has its challenges but it’s also a really unique experience. And one of the rare thru hikes you can do in January. Makes for an interesting pre PCT/AT warmup because if you’ve done this your going to kick the crap out of the early sections...
I think you hit a nest of seed ticks. And omg I can't believe you had to hike with your stomach messed up...that's awful. I have Crohns so, I get a lot of that and I'm stuck at home when it happens. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Again...omg Beautiful sunset.
Just found your channel! I'm stoked! I want to do this same thing, key west to Canada! Wont be straight thru tho, I'm starting the AT soon so maybe I'll see ya out there! Looks like you're killin it! Keep rockin those miles!
I generally use my poles to smack them before I have to shove through. That seems to at least cut down on them. All the ones I found were coming up from my shoes
Another great episode. Sorry about the gas station food, I know what it's like to feel that sick on trail, but you came through like a trooper. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see you cross the Canadian border.
Tics are nasty around here, especially when the weather starts to stay continually warm. Also what kind of shoes do you use because my flat feet cant find any!
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I've switched to Tread Labs inserts. The initial cost is about $65. The arch portion is guaranteed for "1 Million Miles", but the top cover pad portion is replaceable for about $16. Very affordable after the initial purchase. Sometimes you can get refurbished ones for about $40. There are multiple arch heights available. They were created by the guy who invented the almighty Chaco! I've gone from daily foot pain to little or no pain at all with the Pace model.
Oh yeh almost foregot: Tea tree oil. Will ward most insects including ticks😉 plus its antibacterial, ✋ i warn u eh a little goes a long way. The stuff is seriously potent.
That was a lone star tick you showed on video. The good news is that they don't carry lime disease. The bad news is that in rare cases they can make you allergic to meat!
I am surprised you have not shaved your beard and shaved your head for tick prevention! I think those were chiggers in your tent? They leave itchy red marks. Do you think you are hiking out of season in Florida with all the swamps, and high water you have been walking through? Whatever you ate at that gas station, never ear there again. You are doing great!
Seems a shame to give up the beard and sun protection but we’ll see how bad it gets. This is the season for the Florida Trail this is just a wetter winter than usual
I'm here for the acerbic sarcasm & deadpan wit because trust me I will never willingly hike the Florida Trail.

“You’re going to become a chew toy for biting midgets.” 🤣🤣🤣Epic quote, you need to keep a list of these epic quotes.

The peanuts may be from boiled peanut vendors that were set up there
This was my guess too 😆
Wish I could have kept up with you
But rock on
You’re killing it
Wow, great job, FT is pretty hard for many reasons, but all the folks recording their trips are bringing awareness and improvements.

beautiful sunset.....too bad about all the bugs....that really was a pretty spot you stopped at for the night. Florida is quite the adventure !

Very interesting thanks
I hope you are staying hydrated. What a rough state. I hope your stay at b&b is terrific.

Love following you . Stay safe and enjoy. Hopefully TN will be nicer to you!!
The ticks are in the palm fronds. That’s why you are getting so many by slapping the fronds.....
I was gonna say the same thing

Wow, rough, rough times, BUT soon the B&B. Some pretty sights though.
Livestream every time you cross into a new state?
The trail really made you work for those miles. Better luck on the next section ☮
There is a fellow named "the walking monk" who has walked across Canada 3:times now and across the USA twice wearing only Crocs for shoeware..
Glad to see u got to the bnb.

Or at the very least see me standing at the Canadian border for the second time in a year unable to get in if it doesn’t open in time :)
wow sounds kinda rough with the bugs and a bad stomach. i like Zamberlan boots.

I have flat feet also. Width is the bigger deal for me. I use altra Olympus shoes with super feet insoles right now
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes how often would you feel youd need to change the super feet insoles considering their price?
I haven’t used those before this so we’ll have to see. I figure once they start getting too ragged I’ll swap them out

Don’t tell my my girlfriend that. She’s an ethical vegetarian and might try and get me intentionally infected...
Are you through Bristol yet? I am tied up 3/2 and 3/3 but would be willing to help you in anyway 3/4.
I just left St Marks today. Bristol is my next resupply when I get there in 4 or 5 days
Do you have any contacts in the Bristol area?
Yikes! Hike 🚶 on
Could be gators, maybe sturgeon
Peanuts = trail magic

Pretty sure they were noseeums. Chiggers are more tick like and the bites are brighter red than what I have.
Deet or Avons, Skin so soft repels them. Thanks for info.
I've got some trail magic ready to mail out to you. What's the best way to contact you, and go over details?
You can message me on Instagram @mattonamtn
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Are you on Twitter? I don't use gram or FB.
I think the tiny ticks are chiggers. Annoying but not as dangerous as ticks.
chew toy new trail name
Pro tip : dr Scolls gel insols. A Canadian hiker secret
2nd!
you need some ear plugs
I do carry a pair. Mostly for when my girlfriend is camping with me. But I also have a pretty bad case of tinnitus and it’s a bit rough using them
Ps...you're tough as nails
Or just stubborn :)
