In my experience in rando nuzlockes of USUM if a trainer's mon can mega evolve it most likely will, the very first trainer I got on route 1 had a Kangaskhan that mega evolved and ran into other mons that mega evolved during battle, I'm pretty sure there is a bias since it's been way to common in my experience

When randomizing trainers, there is a option to give mega Pokémon their mega stones
Pretty much every pokemon that can mega will mega evolve if it anything like Dan and Joey's Shiny cagelocke.

the dig using sewaddle reminds me of that heracross sudowudo fusion who used a move it didn't know and god that mega at the start of the game

I think the forced mega evolution may have been tied to Hau being randomized to Blue?
Some trainer's pokemon can be random megas I believe, that's an option in the randomizers for 3DS games
