Broken gameboys are much cheaper and usually come in lots, like the box of 20 I bought on ebay for this video (nobody really sent in GBs, though I did get some messages from people who wanted to.)
Oh my god u are officially the person who has created everything on the internet. I remember when this video was popular and I remember seeing other videos like it.
I want my fucking Gameboy back now. It's been several years and the note I sent even said that I'm LOANING my Gameboy to you until you figure out the mystery. Give me my childhood back.
wasn't there a video where you took apart a gaming console or something and found like 4 tablets, a psp and a gremlin that guarded one of them, or was that somebody else?
Well I do know what it is, its 16gigs of ram, and it also transmits or helps police and other emergency services. No one noticed cause it didn't interrupt gameplay. They were also used to triangulate car phones as well. They didn't have a strong enough network back then so that helped magnify the signal.
It's a tracking device that they originally installed for the early gameboys to protect them for theft, it was a beta that never worked properly but it's basically anti-theft :3
Oh wow! This is in mine too! I didn't notice there was an antenna though, I thought that was just something to connect it to the other parts. Huh. I see there's a part two so I'm going to check it out; maybe you figured out what it was?
Neil, what is the serial number on both of the Gameboys? Figuring out which came first would be a big help in figuring out whether that component was added later or removed later.
After watching the second one, I can say you got me. I didn't think it was a spy device or anything, but you fooled me in that you made me think you thought it was one, and you fooled me into thinking it was actually something that came in a Game Boy. I love where you took it at the end of the second one!
Triangular head screws are common to many little toys, doodads and electronics. Producers use them because most people won't have triangular head screwdrivers (except those people qualified to work on said toys, doodads and electronics) and therefore can't open them up and tinker with them.
I used to work for nintendo in 1985 and they showed me the first gameboy they made and that little screen was supost to be a miny tv that you hooked up to your gameboy to watch tv and play but nintendo recalled it 1988 before we shiped the gameboys but when i was in the factory i stuck one in a random gameboy so someday people whould know. jk its probaly a goverment tracker!!!!!!!!!
it looks like the guts from the Gameboy TV peripheral; you could use it to watch B&W TV when you plugged it in to your gameboy. Why they marketted it, I don't understand, but from the way it's hot glued into your console, I think either some newb stuck it there cuz they were trying to look busy or someone just was having one of those creative moments that only excruciating boredom can inspire. BTW, LCD screens did exist in '89, there's one on the front of your Gameboy
Was this inspired by that string of videos of people taking apart batteries, like the one (parody) where the dude opens up like a 6-volt and "finds" a bunch of smaller random batteries inside?
Actually, a speaker could prevent it from working because the electronics could be wired in series or it might have diagnostic checks on it. I suggest you re-solder the speaker and it should start up
The antenna and the old LCD screen remind me pretty much of an old mobile phone. Maybe some part dropped on the wrong part of the assembly line, and the screwmonkey in the sweatshop didn't know what else to do with it?
It makes me think either A.Gameboys were meant to have gps, B.They could connect to the internet usimg some component from what appears to be a phone,or C.You're being tracked by the NSA
That is a transmitter or a receiver it will either be for some sort of tracker or sending some sort of signal out to a saterlight (sorry for bad spelling) or sending a signal to another device just like it
It's a tracker that transmits a signal to the company so they could see if a good majority of the people were using there systems so they knew weather or not they had a good product. Last week me n my friends took a part a Wii and theres a small chip in there that works with the WiFi everyone does all game companies n cell ones

8 years? It's more than 10 years! I feel old.
I'd love for this to be the start of an Alternate Reality Game, something really spooky and weird.
Neil: *posts a video about a video game system*

My guess, its part of a cellphone that fell into your gameboy at the production plant.
Cellphones in 1989 costed thousands of dollars. No way they were manufactured in the same factory where Game Boys were.
Watch part 2
I did, but thats what I thought when I first saw it.

this sound a bit dumb but could it be a tracking device?
those are some big glasses

It's a radio chip for model airplanes
it is a bigger mystery than stop 'n' swap on banjo kazooie. we will possibly never know what it truely is
Don't apologize for the glasses Neil, they are adorable!
His glasses are amazing! :'D
it could be a test/quality control tool that was left in during production
I'd open my own Game Boy to see what's inside, but mine still works for now and I'm afraid to risk breaking it.
did you buy your gameboy used ?I think some random kid wanted to track his gameboy in case he loses it or something…
Nintendo put those in early models as an unused feature that would let you check stocks on your gameboy.
