  • Did you know you can stay overnight at Elk Lodge RV parks for as little as $5 a night? An annual membership in Elks costs $50 to $200 and entitles you to stay at approximately 1,000 Elks Lodges throughout the country. Sometimes it's dry camping, but other times it can be partial or full-hookups. In this short video, Elks member Jim O'Briant of OvernightRVparking.com explains how Elks camping works and how easy and inexpensive it is to join.

    I joined the Elks in October 2016 just for the RV parking. I have now used them several times and so far, very good. You need to check out each facilities website ahead of time to make sure they have RV parking and...if their location is fit for safety. A few of them I found were in the middle of town, where lots of foot traffic from bars was evident. I found $20.00 for hookups to be common. That is a pretty good savings if your just needing to spend the night.

    The word "discrimination" has a standard dictionary meaning. This is the sense in which I use the term. I did not mean to imply that anything illegal was going on. For example, some golf courses even today "discriminate" against black people and disallow them membership. This is not illegal because they are private clubs. It is, however, by my standards despicable. I understand that until relatively recently (1973) the Elks have also "discriminated" against black people and disallowed them membership (New York Times January 7, 2001). They reversed their policy in 1973 and removed the "whites only" clause from their constitution and were proud to do so - I applaud them for that. I only wish they would also remove the requirement for a belief in a "supreme being".

      +Philip Roll You need to believe in a "Supreme" being? I thought it was a belief in "String" beans. I believe in string beans because I've seen and eaten them. I got more reason to believe in the Loch Ness Monsters because I seen pictures claiming to show it. No such thing with any supreme beings I've ever heard of.

      Philip Roll I'm an Elk in NY, our past Exalted Leader was a black woman! Well loved and respected by a largely white membership. What you describe has not been my personal experience of the Elks Lodge.

    Unfortunately, Elks discriminates against those of us that do not believe in a "supreme being" and denies them membership. Interestingly, some Elks suggested that I simply lie and get it. I found that ironic. They do seem like a fine organization and provide help and services to many. I wanted to join to participate in that.

      The B.P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) has three membership requirements: (1) be a United States Citizen; (2) be 21 years of age or older; and (3) profess a belief in a Supreme Being.
      As for #3, there are no requirements as to what Supreme Being you believe in. It may be the God of Christians and Jews, or Allah of Islam, or any other. While I don't believe he belonged to the B.P.O.E., Frank Lloyd Wright once said, "I believe in God, only I spell it Nature." As far as the Elks are concerned, that would suffice.They simply ask this as a "yes or no" question, and you need give no further details.

      But if you said "yes" on the application, and then at some later time, in the course of casual social conversation, you let it slip that you're an atheist, would that get you booted from the organization?

    • @vonrollveeg
      @vonrollveeg 7 лет назад

      Strangely, even though I do not believe in a supreme being, I have a good sense of ethics and morals. I just can't bring myself to lie or to equivocate or to prevaricate. I don't care if I would get "caught" or not. I'm just not willing to do it. I have strong feelings about our veterans having gone through the Vietnam era and would really like to help. I think the Elks do a good job (I am definitely not disparaging the Elks - they are a great organization) and wanted to participate. I've found other ways to accomplish this.

      [Strangely, even though I do not believe in a supreme being, I have a good sense of ethics and morals.]
      PR, nothing strange about this. Many atheists have a greater moral compass as they have no directive to commit oppression/intolerance via 'scriptures'.
      As one who acknowledges, accepts and embraces evolutionary fact; scriptures are therefore man made. The scribe may have felt his pen was directed, but it was his morality (or lack there of) that was transferred to parchment.

      In fact, it is the secular society that demands and upholds the right to believe in your own mind.
      Without us; it'd be WAR.
