- Stephanie J. Block performs "Never Neverland (Fly Away)" at Scott Alan's CD Release event for 'Dreaming Wide Awake' on January 7, 2008. CD available on CDbaby.com/scottalan and iTunes.
BACKSTORY: So, I had done a Benefit Concert with Shoshana Bean called 'The Kitchen Sink.' It was my first professional gig in the city. Stephanie J. Block was there. I had JUST seen her a few days prior in Boy from Oz, but I was to scared to say hi to her at the Concert. Intimidated.
Yet, that's what email is for. I went to her website and emailed her a letter, exactly how I had touched base with Shoshana. I didn't think she would respond. (Side note, I have ALL of these emails saved still. Sad, right ?!?!). Well, she did respond, and said she loved the song Shoshana sang at the Concert and has a benefit coming up for BroadwayWorld.com called 'Standing Ovations' and has to sing two songs and it would be great to sing something new. So, we scheduled to meet later that week at Shetler Studios.
So, we meet and I am shaking and start playing her some songs and she is so sweet and keeps going 'Yes, this is beautiful, I'll take this one.' I played her Goodnight (the song Liz Callaway sings on the CD) and she said 'this is the one.' So, she made her decision, but, in a weird twist of fate she said, just in case, do you have anymore ? I literally had played her EVERYSONG ... Well, there was one more ...
Never Neverland (Fly Away) was a very personal song for me and I hardly ever played it for anyone. Everyone I DID play it for passed it over very quickly, so I was even skeptical to play it for Stephanie.
Well, I did, and she loved it. So, she took Goodnight and Never Neverland home with her. She emailed me a few days later to let me know the director of the Concert asked her to sing two more well known songs but was going to try and sneak in one of these sings, if possible. She still didn't know which one. Well, the concert came, and Stephanie sang her first song and then an intermission came and I thought 'well, hmmmm, maybe she isn't singing my song after all.' Truth be told, I was going to leave.
I am so glad I didn't. Stephanie came out, I had my tape recorder ready, and her performance changed my life forever, literally.
Some songs are meant for a performer. This song was one of my trunk songs, and Stephanie made it a spotlight song of mine. Everything happens for a reason, when it's meant to.
Stephanie J Block is one of Broadway's crown jewels.. One of Broadway's Best not so kept secret secret.. I could listen her sing pages out of the phone book and enjoy it as though she was singing something straight out of any of the best Broadway musical's!!! she is on my list of people I want to meet or better yet someone I'd to work with.. I run lights or sound or both, stage manage.. That would be just about the best thing that could happen to me!!!
Gosh - for the first half I would have sworn I was listening to Jodi Benson.
Both are great. Love Stephanie.
I know someone who was also in the workshop for Wicked. There are no guarantees.
"i gotta be in it to win it cause Shoshana set me up that way" LOL these women are amazing singers and have amazing personalities. And these songs are simply wonderful. I have watched every single video from this show. Thank you Scott.
I would literally die if Stephanie j. Block called me and sang Defying Gravity for me over the phone! No, seriously, she has got to be the most incredible singer and actress in the history of Broadway (In my personal opinion)!
That would be nice for you, Mikeala. She is after all your favorite singer and actress....she looks beautiful....way more beautiful than Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj....both unlady like! She has to be the beautiful and wonderful actress because she looks beautiful and looks wonderful!
"I gotta be in it to win cause Shoshana set me up that way!" lol I love her so much
Shoshana and Stephanie-- my top two Elphabas ever? Good gracious. This is like some fantastically wonderful dream... except everyone still has their clothes on. =P
Seriously though, the song is beautiful. Stephanie sings it with her usual powerhouse of heart and soul. Completely reminds me why I'm so hopelessly smitten with her.
Loved it! A+
This is actually one of my very favorite songs (I have a Peter Pan/Neverland/never-wanna-grow up thing myself), and I was introduced to it when I stumbled on Stephanie singing it... who knows where anymore. I'm definitely doing my part in spreading the word of its greatness!
Can't get any better than Sho and SJB together in one video. Scott you are amazing!!!
I'm so glad I had to opportunity to see her in Wicked and 9 to 5. Now I have her autograph, a picture of me with her, and her first solo CD, along with all the cast recordings she's on. I can't wait to see where she lands next!
Wow, reading the back story of this song gave me goosebumps!! Stephanie J Block is one of the best performers I have ever had the privilege of seeing live. No doubt about it.
This is such a beautiful song! Ever since I was 5 years old, I've always loved the Broadway version of Peter Pan so this is a really touching song for me. I absolutely love Sho and Stephanie! They are both so amazing!
so i recently performed in my last dance recital, and we transformed peter pan into a ballet. i had the honor to play peter pan, and this song really spoke to me. now, whenever i hear this song, i think about my wonderful time playing the crazy boy who will never grow up.
I'd already favorited this even before Stephanie came onstage--Shoshana was that awesome. But this...yes, it certainly turned out to be one of THOSE videos. When you wish you could just favorite it over and over and over! Sho wasn't kidding; Stephanie gave it her all and probably WOULD have continued to be incredible if somebody died. Died from awesome intake.
Cheesy comment. But I'm just in awe. Mesmerizing performance. Brilliant introduction. xD
I've been obsessed with this video for years...it never fails to make me happy x
I just saw her in 9 to 5 in LA! She brought the house down when she sang "Get Out and Stay Out." She makes it seem so effortless.
oh my GOSH. the music is brilliant SJB is brilliant, EVERYTHING!
the cello and the violin part is beautiful.
Amazing.! This woman can sing with the best of them.! She just gets better with every song she sings. Just WOW 😳.! WOW.!
shoshana speaks the truth, because watching this is so much more amazing than just hearing it, and now i love stephanie j. block =)
Love the backstory!!
yeah, i was there too. wow. total mind blow. we could've seen each other and not even known. i hope you enjoyed it sir. yes.
INCREDIBLE... INCREDIBLE... INCREDIBLE... Song and singer...
*picking up jaw from floor*
What I really enjoy about her performances is that she tells a story when she sings. She's a very gifted woman.
SJB is my inspiration as a performer! And its true...I have seen four Elphabas, including Idina, and all were amazing...but SJB was far and above the others...she OWNED the role as if it was her own- which it was, before "the business" got in the way. I'm glad she got her chance later on because she was incredible- she brought me to tears like no other actress could as Elphaba. She is so brilliant, and so classy.
I've been watching this video for two months and it still blows me away. Stephanie is the greatest.
I actually get excited every time I hear or watch her sing this song, and by the way, thanks, Scott, for the beautiful backstory on this vid!
every time i listen to this it makes me happy =D
Just stumbled across this and I'm so, so incredibly happy I did.
I love how Shoshana's whole introduction is I was gonna say this, and then I was gonna say that, and it becomes her whole speech. Funny and cool. :)
Probably the most underrated singers ever, She is Incredible,
I bought the CD last night and was blown away by both Home and Never Neverland. The ladies both have such pure voices.
I love this song so so so much...
omg i was lauginin so hard at it i was like wait a secondddd
they are both my favoritess =D
She looks so different when she's not green, but the beautiful voice still remains. She will always be Elphaba to me and she has the most wonderful voice i've ever heard.
I love that Stephanie walked out all chatty and happy from her introduction but had a moment of visual theatrical silence before she sings. Then she completely owned it and left it all out there as promised! Do I hear a Tony? :D
gives me chills and makes me tear up pretty much every time i watch it.
This is phenomenal!
i love the banter between the two of them in the beginning. I love Stephanie's voice. It is amazing.
lyrics and melody finally seem to come together when performed by Stephanie. simply beautiful
i love this :)
i love how she can go from joking around. look down. then be serious and give the song such meaning
blockhead29 yeah, she can just slip into characters it’s crazy

She's doing her own London Concert at the end of the month at the New Players Theatre!

What would I have given to be on that street when she burst into song :D Shoshana is hilarious and Stephanie is great!
What I would have given to see Stephanie J. Block singing DG on the streets of New York on her phone singing to Shoshana Bean.
yeah! =)
still flying :-) ooo
Shoshana's intro is classic.
god damn!!!!
Steven Shwartz wrote all of the music for Steph. She was the first Elphaba. When Universal Pictures became the major sponsor, they wanted a known performer in the lead role. Idina had just been nominated for "Rent" so she replaced Steph. Stephanie did all of the original workshops.
gahhhhh iloveherrrrrr
Alan I just had a thought.. you should release a Live CD .. I love how my girls sing the songs live as well as on the CD .. I need both LOL heheh
Love ya!! PS FYI I jam this blaring it SINGING ALONG down the freeway LOL .. im sure people think im a crackhead singing about peter pan!! LOL
LOves ya scott!!!
Yes, SJB, it *is* second to the left. Straight into my pants... This woman is a paragon of vocal talent and control.
And, plus, Shoshana Bean in the video means the lulz are abound.
I love Steph!! And Sho's introduction is so funny!
Also, why are you all talking about Kerry?!
wow
When was Stephanie in the Wicked Workshops? Idina was in them in 2001 and in the previews and originated the role on Broadway. People always seem confused about this.
haleygrace1 Idina was in the previews for marketing before opening and during the beginning of the run for the show. SJB was supposed to be the original Elphaba on Broadway, but they chose to replace SJB with Idina because she had been nominated for a Tony = More people coming to watch. They gave SJB the Original Touring Company instead because SJB did the workshop of the show- A LOT of effort. Workshop meaning she was in the production aspect, like in movies, the making of, helping with the songs etc. I saw the Original Touring Company with SJB, her husband Sebastian, and Meghan Hilty.
I love this song!!!!!!!!! ABOUT PETER PAN...Now i know my Neverland is in my HEART......
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
is there a backtrack to it? i'd like to do it for my schools small ensembles night
shoshana bean and stephanie j block are awesome!!
(so is who ever wrote this song!!!)
SJB for London sometime! We lent Amercia Kerry!
haha i got that same mental picture!
lol me too!
i completely agree. although i do think that idina is an amazing performer in her own right as well. but in my opinion steph is really just amazing and yeah...in a league of her own.
GO SJB!
She'd tell me about Captain, and all of his men
Who followed Peter with a hook, replaced as his hand
In those tales bad guys seldom did win
So the Captain was eaten, and Wendy had twins
That's the stories I recall
But I may have made up the end
Don't remember much
At three feet tall
Except for when I'd say "Mom
Let me go to Never Neverland
Let me fly for one day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
So I pretend I'm flying away"
I'm flying away
Well, to my surprise
I grew up too fast
And that easy life of Tinkerbell, it never did last
So I'd silently dream my soul far, far away
Where I can be immortalised like Peter one day
That's my childhood as I recall
But in some ways it never did end
And now I'm standing, well, a little bit taller
Except when I'd say "Mom!
Let me go to Never Neverland
Let me fly for one day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
So I pretend I'm flying away"
I'm flying away
And though life is never easy
As we, as children, read in the books
Where fairy dust can just fly you so far away
And all I ask is that you
Leave me my imagination
So I can pretend I'm flying away
I'm flying away!
And that is where I'll stay
Right there in Never Neverland
I'll be flying
I'll be dying
For love, appreciation
Where mermaids would sing
And fairies would ring
Right there, there in Never Neverland
And it's second to the left and straight on 'til morning
Or is it second to the right and straight on 'til morning?
In Never Neverland
In my Never Neverland

For the love get her a tony

@EliseWhatever RIGHT?!??!
if sho is pretending steph it looks really good!:O
And notice how NO one sneezed or died...just because steph said so. :D
@ginohhh I know! I love it! "This bitch calls me back..." hahah
Okay, i must be still a child cause when a grown up says a joke that makes a grown up laugh, you'll see that child would not be laughing, until when the child grows up.
