Concluding reflection as a text: I've been an observer and somewhat fascinated by the Jordan Peterson phenomenon. One of the interesting things is how many young men are drawn to his call to stand up straight, clean their rooms, tell the truth and take responsibility. He challenges people with great success. I compare this with the messaging in my Church, where for decades the opposite was proposed in pastoral meetings - and still is by an ageing generation of those comprising much of the leadership. The wisdom was and is - at least for some - to demand less and less from people. Coddling the faithful. The result? The men were the first to abscond themselves. By looking at today's pews it would appear that there are more manly religions than Christianity. The months I spent in Jerusalem many years ago, I found myself pondering this question looking at bearded patriarchs of the ultra-orthodox Jews and the sea of Arab men streaming to the temple mount for Friday prayer. Is my own faith more effeminate compared to those? There is a grain of truth in that. There is an emphasis of the female element in Christianity. The Church understands itself as the bride of Christ - its type is female. It's clergy, representing Christ, isn't, but still, as Church collectively and our souls individually, both are understood in the typology of a spousal relation, in which Christ is the head and groom. So a certain machismo will never adequately reflect the Christian Spirit. But all of this has been true from the beginning. It was true for the followers of Jesus, for the church fathers, for the first monks. But by no means does a reflection on history fail to show the most manliest of man embracing the cross. Even a few decades ago a page from a magazine for altar serves I bought on ebay out of curiosity had the image of Bishop Francis Xavier Ford, a US-catholic missionary who in 1952 died in a communist prison in China. Nothing in his story is effeminate. I liked the vintage artwork and framed the page that also asks its youthful readers in bold letters: “Will you take his place?”. It is a call meant to inspire - and to much more than cleaning your room - though I'm pretty sure the good bishop kept his office tidy. Christianity while rejecting machismo is certainly manly. Currently we just appear to make that hard to see for the many men who keep their distance. Catholics, without a doubt, would do well to overcome the insufferable clericalism of banal modern liturgies that condemn the faithful not only to a new passivity but infantilizes them. The whole strength of the clear, old rituals is to give men something to do, without being emasculated. This is one of the reasons, I suspect, why particularly men are drawn to traditional liturgies. But I digress. Aside from the draw that Jordan Peterson has on young men - something, I suggest we as priests should at least reflect on - there is an even more important thing that astounds me: namely how many people say that they have returned to a life of faith on account of him. It is not that it is embarrassing, that a Canadian psychologist can motivate more people to reflect on God than a worldly bishop preaching his shallow gospel promising “re-forms” to journalists. What is astounding is that Peterson himself is not exactly a believer. Now, much has happened over the years. He may have come to hold new positions and abandoned others. I don't know. The story of his wife and her discovery of the rosary is very touching. But if I'm not mistaken, so far in his books, at least those that I have read, and the interviews that I have heard, Peterson is not a Christian, but rather a follower of the Swiss analytical psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. That is to say: he is fascinated by the stories of the bible; He will spend hours unpacking what he thinks are hidden meanings of Genesis or Exodus; he is touched by the message and life of Jesus. You could even say that he is convinced of their truth. But he is not sure if any of it has actually happened in any real way. Jesus, for all that Peterson has stated, may never have existed at all, much less been the actual son of God made flesh. The particular story or better the myth he holds to be of the greatest value. But whether it is really historical to him seems secondary. That is perfectly Jungian, but it is not Christian in any real sense. Even if Peterson should have since changed his views, what remains is the fascinating circumstance that according to many comments I have read over the years, Peterson has been instrumental in the new found belief of many or in their taking it more seriously - all the while not being a believer himself - yet, maybe. I'm not sure what to make of that, or if indeed the new found faith of some will bear the same mythological marks as Peterson's. I unsurprisingly agree with him that the story of Christ is the greatest story ever told. I even agree that if it had not really happened Christ's story turning the logic of the world - and even of many conceptions of the divine - on its head would still make it the greatest and most unexpected story. The strangeness and persistence of Jewish monotheism, the scandal that not “a” god but “the” transcendent God became man; the logic of the cross defeating the logic of the world; the hour of defeat being really the hour of victory; loss being the only gain; It is a story of paradox. If many do not see its strangeness anymore, is because of the triumph of that very story. Tom Holland's book “Dominion” gives one account of it. He, another non-believer, suggests that even the modern rejection of God and the apparent alternative values promoted by its western opponents can only be really understood in light of the paradoxical victory of cross. Again, I agree, it is the greatest story. And it would contain great truths even if it were only a myth. But I contend it is not a mere story. I contend that its most important claim is that it is historical truth. The first great enemy of Christianity, who had persecuted the apostles, had said as much after unexpectedly being thrown off his high horse and seeing the light. “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ - whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.(1 Cor 15,13-19). The early Christians did not just look for timeless wisdom even if it came from the greatest story ever told. They were concerned with one thing: did it happen: his life, his death, his resurrection. Only if these are historically true, are we not to be pitied. Only if these things really happened do they warrant to turn the whole world and its fateful logic on its head, as Christ has done - or to stand on our own head in order to gain the true perspective. So, did it happen? And which argument would convince you?
Thank you, Johannes. Beautiful photography and storytelling. But especially thanks for your teachings and reflections in this crazed world. God's Peace.
Ahhh, the Labours of Hercules once again! Many of us have watched neighbor Martijn and his generous volunteers digging out the basement of his small cabin, the unending, grueling work, down in the dusty darkness. At least your task was better-lit and you could stand up! Nonetheless, your floor seemed just as stubborn, having to dig out the embedded rocks with a power hammer! Your closing reflections are beautiful and thought-provoking. Thanks for your channel.
Wondering if you'll please show us the result of all the bulb planting? Spring 2024 is coming soon...I'd love to see all your flowers. 😊 Thank you for the sharing of your beautiful world. The sunrise and valley cloud cover were exceptionally special. I hit pause and just focused on all the colors.
Dear Johannes, I hope that you will consider a permanent RUclips residence .... well more permanent than just one year. I, too, love your photography and its subjects. Your English is very beautiful and true to the belief that often a language is spoken more creatively by one who is not a native. And all that combined with your exquisite Closing Reflections have totally captured my attention and appreciation. Please consider staying on, even if you must give up your little sanctuary. Thank you for sharing.
Amen brother,"For without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is,and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him." Hebrews 11:6. I sought Him who was seeking me. Amazing grace.
Makes me appreciate my ancestors' struggles and how I wouldn't have my easy life without their sacrifices. Imagine building a house and feeding a family without electricity and gasoline. I am thankful every time I turn on hot water having lived in primitive circumstances.
This has become, by far, my favourite RUclips series. Thank you, Johannes. There is ministry, worship, honest hard work, creativity, quiet meditation, enjoyment of creation, and thoughtful reflections all bound up in each episode. Yes, Jesus is alive and real, and my hope rests in Him. I have been praying for Jordan Peterson for a long time now that he would see Jesus with the eyes of faith and find his peace with God, just like CS Lewis did. God bless you, Johannes.
Your reverance of the awe-inspiring nature around you touches my heart. Your attention to all the little things. Your sensitivity and portrayal in these moments speaks of your deep love for God's creation. I, also, have been drawn to the grandeur of mountain spirit. The ancient stones, boulders larger than trucks, rushing waters, strong winds. Being here has strengthened my soul and deepened my relationship with Our Father. Thank you for sharing. You inspire many. I have been making something for you and left you a message in the buy me a coffee chat so I can send this to you. Thank you. Bless your work and life. ❤️ much love from the highlands of Virginia.
Love this, i'm a converted Greek orthodox from being a Baptist...although I attend a Russian Orthodox Church.. i have found that waiting for your insight at the end tests my patience.,, however it is all worth it. i wonder sometimes when watching you going thru your building projects , you ever say," what did i get my self into.. i like the pond work you have done... at the age of 63, and a semi retired nurse i wish that we could turn off the daily noise and reflect more in the silence that draws us near to THe Saviour of our Souls

Johannes, I found your videos recently (or did they find me?) and have watched a number of them in awe of your monastic life in the Alps. This particular video was as if you read my thoughts. I was thinking: here is a true man...a man of the cloth...an academic who knows how to get his hands dirty in order to make something beautiful - a beautiful hermitage, the majestic oratory, a lovely garden...and the stone walls! Did you learn your skills as a craftsman early in life? Your artistry shines through every video. And I have not even gotten to your teachings and reflections....icing on the cake! Pure gold. And, YES, Christ arose! Glory to God in the highest. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It is a blessing.
Am watching this for the 3rd time, your whole being humbles me, I'm so grateful you share your observations, your gifted talents, your environment and your blessings! ❤
I guess being in my late "70s and living in the Australian country side, more than 45 Km from the nearest church, contributed towards making me a Christmas, Easter, Weddings and funerals church goer. That is perhaps why I look forward so much to viewing your videos. The end reflections have become a substitute for Sunday mass for me. So thanks for that. Pity that you only intend to do 12 months worth of programs... perhaps you may re consider. I don't mean to put any pressure on you, no.... perhaps I do, said Fred with a broad smile on his face. But seriously ... I greatly enjoy your contributions and the well thought out and presented reflections. Peace be with you
Sehr schön, was Du hier erschaffen hast Johannes, RESPEKT. Ein wunderbares Gebiet und ein Ort der Ruhe und Selbstfindung. Wir wünschen Dir alles Glück dieser Welt und vor allem gute Gesundheit. Grüsse aus der Schweiz❤👍😍
The hermitage is a labor of love; the building and the gardens. Thank you for sharing. Your closing reflection has, once again, provoked thoughts upon spirituality. Thank you so much. Bon journee-
Grazie padre 🙏🏻 per la fatica che ci insegni a non evitare, per la bellezza del creato che ci insegni a contemplare, per la preghiera che ci insegni ad imitare
My parents never took me to church... they grew up in northern Germany during WWII. They and many of their neighbors seem to have also lost the faith. I do my best to enjoy every moment. As by your videography it seems you do as well. Finding the beauty, the spirit, the source, the God... there, in the moment. And honoring it to the best of my ability. Also honoring other people, plants, food... I am not educated about the bible or God. It seems to me that it is an assembly of old stories - many times translated - some old stories ignored or lost - after a long oral tradition. There is truth in there... there are excellent morals in there. But I would rather walk, ski, bike, sail.. through nature, garden, enjoy a peaceful Sunday breakfast.. then attend church. As my parents did.
Lovely! I don't need to be convinced about the Greatest Story. I believe with all the faith my human heart and brain can muster. As for Mr. Peterson...remember his is a scientist first and foremost. This sort of training does not allow for faith, but measurable results. My father was an engineer and he used to say that when he looked at a tree, many times all he saw were angles to measure. But, at the moment he died, I watched as he saw something to believe in with utter awe and reverence-finally. Thank you for sharing all this beauty, Father. You are SO STRONG! What a blessing.
Father, thank you once again for a truly remarkable reconstruction restoration as well as your sincere and reflective thoughts that Jesus does live in our hearts. Your life work is truly inspirational to me and I look forward to each new offering. I wish you peace, liberty, health and pray that you remain able to produce these weekly videos as part of your continuing ministry.
Padre, raised a Catholic I encountered Christ through the Jesus Movement, as a 20 year old. After 40 years joyfully (mostly!) worshipping in various evangelical, pentecostal, protestant faith settings, the currents have led me to the 'simplicity' of the Liturgy, and infrequent Mass. Who could have guessed, not me?! You are 100% correct on dear Dr Peterson - he has a war to wage and is making a massive impression on many, but we pray he will humble himself before the Risen King. As all must who choose the divine and eternal life. Thanks for your labour of love. John
I too, have a problem with my floor. The warm humid air condenses on its surface in the warmer months. This moisture is great for growing mold, but terrible for my allergies. John in Bethel, Missouri. USA
I thank you for your words again this week. I so look forward to them. And I am convinced that Yeshua died on the cross, rose on the third day, and will come again to receive His own. ❤
Another beautiful programme, Johannes. Thank you! Your programmes are so peaceful. But thought provoking too. I hope you are going to make more than twelve programmes. As one minister of the Gospel said, God is, God loves, and God loves us.
Thank you for your teachings…I love to learn about God. And your way of teaching and story telling is perfect. I love the beautiful photography and I love watching you make your place a better place. I can’t wait to see all the flowers when they bloom. God bless you.😊
I have believed in GOD since i was 8, im 67 now, my TRUST and FAITH in GOD JESUS has saved me from myself and this brainwashed world. I am living proof GOD exists . His grace is more than sufficient. GOD bless you just found your stream, may shalom and God's holy spirit cover you with LOVE beyond understanding,in JESUS NAME AMEN THANK YOU GOD from Seattle washington USA shalom SHALOM
Please consider continuing with these videos. Perhaps weekly but shorter. If time is a factor. It could eventually be one a revenue stream, if your followers became numerous enough. And besides I am being a little selfish here. I enjoy seeing your videos and listening to your thoughts. Talk about the greater good!
How I look forward to your videos Johannes, and in particular, your reflections at the end make me think about life and all things in a way I’ve never done before. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ See you next week ..
The peace &tranquility of your home and lush garden is something I remember from my own childhood as my parents to Bukit their own house and 4acre garden in West of England from a remote field with more than 2000 species of flowers & shrubs and a fruit and vegetable garden that required me to be up at 6am to help in so this post a lovely nostalgia trip from 50 yrs ago as you lie on the bank planting bulbs.thank you❤😊
Johannes your video series is wonderful and enjoyable. The content and videography is especially good. We hope you will someday again be able to share your journey with us. Thank you for what you do. We appreciate you.
Watching you walking and saying your brevery remined me of Fr Ben and Fr Lausier. This was in the early 1980's when I was doing missionary work for the Catholic Church in PNG. They have since passed, RIP guys. Bless you Father.
Closing reflection was very insightful. My daughter and I had the same thoughts and discussion about JP so to hear you share some of the same thoughts was a blessing. PTL.
The balcony/terrace on the front of the front of the house, looks like it would lend itself very well to a moveable, swiveling pedestal-mounted telescope!...I could imagine spending hours on a clear day observing the valleys below with a telescope!...and good for observing heavenly bodies at night also...
In Afrikaans and Dutch we talk about "PItkos"... Food for thought, truths and ideas to be reflected upon. That's what your reflectiins are to me and I suspect, a lot of us. I Sincerely hope that you don't stop this after your 12 month series has concluded. We need all the objective pitkos we can get, especially delivered in such a clear and succinct way.
Your way of life is so admirable. You are so aware of everything. It's beautiful how you build your house and surroundings to a paradise of silence. And how to perceive nature and share it with us. The little things. Thank you. greetings from the Netherlands.
Bless you Fr Johannes. Your videos are so inspiring and your reflections at the end are making a great spiritual focus for Lent. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
Really beautiful as-always. The lizards in the wall of the house, always melt my heart.❤ The beauty of the water features, the garden; and that epic chore in removing the old floor!! That looked like the worst project I have seen... back-and-forth with rocks, then stones, then pebbles, then dirt... 😅 That, takes a lot of patience!! I love the close-ups of the different beings that make up your neighbors... And your reflections at the end, always profound; thought-provoking, etc. Even for an agnostic such as me. I am sad though, that we are now in October, and nearly finished with the year. Will you not consider doing this on a regular basis? Hugs! xo
The monologue at the end of this video was the best so far. To answer your last question, of course it happened, but if anyone has any doubts, they should take the time to study and reflect on the contents of the Bible. Eternal life is such a great gift that no one should miss it because of intellectual laziness. Have you ever heard of Darek Barefoot series of videos called “Prophetic Patterns and the Bible: the Special Emphasis of Typologetics”. Very good stuff.
Back to your video, the least we can say is that you are not afraid of work. I enjoy each of your videos for the beautiful views of nature, your comments and the skills you display.
Hello dear Johannes, Concerning the problem with insects in the wood of your roof... I remembered that Borax is very useful. It is a pesticide without being dangerous for humans or the environment. Hope it may safe your roof against bigger and more espensive interventions. Good Luck! Judith
Hard work to redo your floor, but worth it. And I love the varied views and weather you enjoy from your mountain cabin, as I enjoy the changing face of the mountain behind my house! Am forever and deeply thankful for the Christian heritage of my Swiss great-grandparents coming down thru the generations even unto my grandkids, an unbroken line of faith and trusting in Jesus! 🙏
Thank you Father for very accurate and realistic description of Petersons fascination about Jesus and Christianity. We must pray that he finally discovers true and alive Christ as a Son of God and at the same time God Himself.
...great job, Johannes, with replacing the floor and insulating it - alone!!! You don't have to go to the gym for exercise! - - - love your thoughts on the inner, deeper essence of life... as for myself, I always 'felt' that Jesus is there, even as a small boy, and then once I had an experience with him, that I will never forget... it turned pain into joy in an instant, and I 'knew' it was him... can (and need) we rationalize his story, and approve, so that we can believe it, and in him? For me the connection with him is entirely through the heart - that is more important for me, than whether the written script of his 'physical appearance' 2 millenia ago is true, partly-true, or not at all... what I do love though is the research (and finds) about his travels to the far east during the un-documented years... 'feels' true to me 💖
I worried for you breathing that dust----but I am sure you know best. That floor re-do is an excellent video for anyone who thinks it might be easy! What a lot of work! Great result, as always.
Did it happen? I agree, this is the big question. My answer is yes, it did happen. And because it did--and only because it did--I have the hope of resurrection and eternal life. Thank you, Divine Messiah--and bless you, DonJo.
Another beautiful programme, Johannes. Thank you! Your programmes are so peaceful. But thought provoking too. I hope you are going to make more than twelve programmes. 🙂 As one minister of the Gospel said, God is, God loves, and God loves us.
Hello Johannes, and thank you for yet again a beautiful, inspiring video. I, too, do not need to be convinced. All one needs do is witness nature, as you show in your films, to know that the Greatest Story Ever Told is true. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me into your world and your mind. Please consider continuing to witness through this medium to us, even though we are half a world away. Kind Regards.......
I wonder if you have read 'God Talks With Arjuna. The Bhagavad Gita' by Paramahansa Yogananda? The closing question at the end of October's Closing Reflection brought it to mind. The Bhagavad Gita has a beautiful view of such questions, in my opinion. It is my hope that you will continue to share your beautiful mind and soul with us beyond your Year in the Life series. I have been filled with peace and mindfulness when I watch each episode. Thank you for sharing.
Un peu de français vous êtes certainement plus intéressant que votre voisin Martjin que je suis depuis longtemps . Merci être la personne que nous voudrions être tous

You inspire many. I have been making something for you and left you a message in the buy me a coffee chat so I can send this to you. Thank you. Bless your work and life. ❤️ much love from the highlands of Virginia.
Thank you Father for sharing the beauty and peace. You work so hard to make your home beautiful and comfortable.
I know that Jesus is with me ... always. And, God lives in my heart, forever. Thank You, Johannes for another magnificent video!♥️

Words cannot describe how thankful we are to watch your stunning videos x❤
"Did it happen?" This is not a question for the mind, but for the magnetic, expansive multidimensional heart, which knows no bounds. ❤
Total humbleness when watching you. Thank you for sharing,
Thank you Fr. Johannes. You are always inspiring
Looks like another leisurely month in the mountains of Italy. 😂. Great video. Love the series!
Thank you Sir for your thought provoking commentary. Praise God that the story of Jesus IS Truth!
You’re a monster dude 😂 work ethic is second to none - you’ve inspired me to step it up in all facets of my life - cheers
Thank you Father for all the blessings you give to us your humble viewers!
Aloha Johannes
Mahalo for sharing your beautiful home and gardens. I am most grateful for your spiritual reflections. You’re such an inspiration.
Oh yes, my son, born in the USA, is named Johannes.
amen!
GOD HAS BLESSED YOU W/INTELLIGENCE , STRENGTH, SKILLS & EVEN MORE, JOHANNES!!!! Do take care. Fl., USA
I love your way of teaching, Father.
Another beautiful programme, Johannes. Thank you! Your programmes are so peaceful. But thought provoking too. I hope you are going to make more than twelve programmes. As one minister of the Gospel said, God is, God loves, and God loves us.
The new floor looks fabulous and the land will look divine when all those bulbs flower. Great job.❤
Thank you for your teachings…I love to learn about God. And your way of teaching and story telling is perfect. I love the beautiful photography and I love watching you make your place a better place. I can’t wait to see all the flowers when they bloom. God bless you.😊

Great job Johannes.
Hard working and praying, reflecting about faith and sharing it. Thank you Johannes for your contribution, I personally appreciate your clips.
Thank you for being you....
I do hope that you continue sharing videos of you life. An inspiration to all. Your garden is breath taking. (NZ)
You have become part of my weekly service, thank you.
How I look forward to your videos Johannes, and in particular, your reflections at the end make me think about life and all things in a way I’ve never done before. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ See you next week ..
I love your videos! I look forward to them every week. The practical and spiritual brought together in a beautiful way! So inspiring!
PTL.
Sempre un piacere sentirti... Grazie 🙏
The balcony/terrace on the front of the front of the house, looks like it would lend itself very well to a moveable, swiveling pedestal-mounted telescope!...I could imagine spending hours on a clear day observing the valleys below with a telescope!...and good for observing heavenly bodies at night also...
Appreciate you Johannes, and especially your clear and thoughtful reflections.
I love hearing from you and watching the enormous appreciation that you have for all that life has to offer. You are very inspiring to many of us !
Thank you for such wonderful videos.....from India
In Afrikaans and Dutch we talk about "PItkos"... Food for thought, truths and ideas to be reflected upon. That's what your reflectiins are to me and I suspect, a lot of us. I Sincerely hope that you don't stop this after your 12 month series has concluded. We need all the objective pitkos we can get, especially delivered in such a clear and succinct way.
Thank you. Wish you were a friend.
Please consider continuing your weekly message.. i am drawn to your perspective.. thank you.
Please continue this video of beautiful and knowledgeable
I always love your words at the ends of your episodes. The icing on the proverbial cake was the alphorn at the end playing out your words!! Thank you!
We love your videos. Beautiful, peaceful, and inspiring. I'd definitely subscribe again next year for a new series 😃
Thank you/Merci. Interesting perspectives on humankind within different lifestyles. 🙏🇪🇺🇬🇧🇫🇷🍷
Lavoro eccellente, complimenti
Hugs! xo
My back is aching in sympathy with you, and I only washed the dishes!
Thank you! This is so needed! I am sad that this series only has two additional episodes.
Thank you Johannes.
Wonderful yet again & very thought provoking, thank you🙏❤️
Beautiful filmography.
I wonder where the bees come from.
Are they wild or is there a beekeeper nearby.
In both cases you must have delicious honey.😊
Hello dear Johannes,
Concerning the problem with insects in the wood of your roof...
Wonderful truth! To God be the glory!
Thank you Father for very accurate and realistic description of Petersons fascination about Jesus and Christianity. We must pray that he finally discovers true and alive Christ as a Son of God and at the same time God Himself.
Always informative and inspiring. Thanks for a period of sanity.
I see you are still feeding the mice. 😊
Your floor looks beautiful.
...great job, Johannes, with replacing the floor and insulating it - alone!!!
Thank you 🙏✝️
Another beautiful programme, Johannes. Thank you! Your programmes are so peaceful. But thought provoking too. I hope you are going to make more than twelve programmes. 🙂 As one minister of the Gospel said, God is, God loves, and God loves us.
Fantastic.... Message. Filming.Editing!
Que gran trabajo y que buenas reflexiones. Por favor cuando acabe el año en diciembre...no habrán más vídeos? Los necesitamos. Un saludo.
Complimenti, sempre bravo.
It’s amazing how you have developed such a property and made it a beautiful garden and home.
32:45 seven foot kale plants??? Amazing
